“How we got to Now” Summative Research Project

Rationale: You will have the opportunity to research examples of creative innovation throughout history,
analyzing the practices and patterns of innovative thinking. You will be able to better understand the conditions
and thinking skills necessary to engage in creative thinking in your own life.
Goals:
 Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the 7 patterns of innovative thinking by applying it to an
analysis of a meaningful invention or idea
 Conduct research
o Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative sources, using advanced searches
effectively
o Assess strengths and limitations or each source in terms of the task, purpose, and audience
o Evaluate credibility and accuracy of each source
 Develop a visual to present your findings (video, infographic, idea map, flow chart, etc.) .
o Integrate information into the presentation piece selectively to maintain clear flow of ideas
o Use supporting evidence
o Organization, development, content, and style are appropriate to purpose, message, and audience
o Make strategic use of digital media (textual, graphic, audio, visual, and interactive elements)
o Avoid plagiarism and follow MLA standard format and citations
Process:
1. Brainstorm! Choose your innovation or idea to research.
2. Set up research questions, based on what you need to know for your presentation.
3. Research! Use the note grid to record your notes.
4. Begin planning for presentation of content: slide planner, storyboard, etc. (must be approved).
5. Prepare for presentation. Submit final files to wiki page on HAIKU.
6. Present to class! (2-4 presentations each day for the duration of the unit)
Content to Include:
I. History, causes (point out 7 patterns of innovation throughout)
a. Historical context throughout (time period, location, culture, economic conditions, etc.)
i. Background, root causes
ii. Contributing factors
iii. Main cause(s)
II. Big idea or innovation (point out 7 patterns of innovation)
a. Person/people involved
b. Conditions
c. Additional relevant details
III. Effects of idea or innovation (point out 7 patterns of innovation throughout)
a. Short-term
b. Long-term
IV. Significance of impact
