LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this session, you should be able to:

1 Define and describe what is Environmental

Engineering
Specify related environmental regulations and
2 standards

3 Analyze environmental problems using mass balance

approach
IMPACT FROM ACTIVITIES

3
SUSTAINABILITY?

“Avoidance of the depletion of natural

resources in order to maintain an
ecological balance”

4

MASS BALANCE APPROACH

Concept
Analogous to Balancing in Environmental System
Balance = Deposit – Withdrawal
Or
Accumulation = Input - Output
of mass of mass of mass

Problem Solving Approach

 Draw a Flowchart
 Show Inputs, Outputs, and Accumulation
 Convert to Mass Units

ter in this system can be simplified to:
Mass balance for water in the lake
Mass Out (Evaporation)

Mass in or Water in (river) Mass out or Water Out (river+ stream)

Lake

Mass in/Out or Water in /out (seepage to and

from Groundwater)

EXAMPLE 1
A sanitary landfill has available space of
16.2x104 m2 at an average depth of 10m.
Solid waste of 765 m3 are dumped at the
site 5 days per week. This waste is
compacted to twice its delivered density.
1. Draw a mass balance diagram
2. Calculate the total volume of landfill
3. Determine the annual volume of solid
waste placed in the landfill
4. Estimate the expected life of the landfill
in years.
14
Example 2
Each month the Lee Dry Cleaning Company
buys 1 barrel of dry cleaning fluid. Ninety
percent of the fluid is lost to the atmosphere
and 10 percent remains as residue to be
disposed of. The density of the dry cleaning
fluid, ρf is 1.5940 g/ml.
1. Draw a mass balance diagram
2. Calculate mass of dry cleaning fluid per
month
3. Estimate the monthly emission rate to the
atmosphere in kg/month.
15
EXAMPLE 3

In water and wastewater treatment processes a

filtration device may be used to remove water from
the sludge formed by a precipitation reaction. The
initial concentration of sludge from a softening
reaction is 2 percent (20000mg/l) and the volume of
sludge is 100m3. After filtration the sludge solids
concentration is 35 percent. Assume that the sludge
does not change density during filtration, and the
liquid removed from the sludge contains no sludge.
Using the mass balance method, determine the
volume of sludge after filtration. [ANSWER: 5.71 m3]
