LITERACY AND NUMERACY COMMITTEE

NARRATIVE REPORT

JULY
I Organized the Literacy and Numeracy Committee for the membership and
election officers for the school year 2014-2015.
OFFICERS:
COORDINATOR: Maylene Fernandez 4th Year St. Francis of Assisi
VICE COORDINATOR: Roecy Serenas Grade 8 – St. Lorenzo Ruiz
SECRETARY: Donna Escopin Grade 9 – St. Agnes

AUGUST – JANUARY
Reading program started at this month with the coordination of the Peer
facilitators headed by Ms. Merlinda De la Paz. It is a remedial program in which
we conduct peer tutorial to the slow readers of the Grade 7. The Peer Facilitators
used fiction books and taught the grade 7 students how to correctly pronounce
English words. The thirty minute session every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
starts every noon break after lunch from 12:30- 1:00.

FEBRUARY
We decided to end the tutorial sessions every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for
the preparation of the tutors which are mostly Forth Year students for their NAT
review.

MARCH
The Officers agreed to donate fiction and story books to the committee so I
decided that I will give sanctions to those students under my subjects to donate
a fiction book which costs Php 5-15 if they cannot pass their project. And we
donated 42 books. It was placed on the Guidance office under the custody of our
Guidance In Charge, Ms. Merlinda Dele Paz.
Narrative Report
(Peer Facilitator)

Every 12:30, the tutors start to gather in one place with the non-reader students of the Grade 7
who are willing to become good and efficient in reading. What makes the tutors so inspired in
reading is the willingness and eagerness of the students to learn. The tutors really made an
effort on how to help their co students. We find books in the library during their free time and
finds in it paragraph, topics or stories that we will use in their tutorial class. Aside from it we
also help the students become good in spelling and pronunciation.

Before we proceed in reading we prepared first a ten item spelling quiz. We started from easy
words at first until the students learn how to spell unfamiliar words.

The tutor does not only depend or stick to one book. They use different books in order for the
students to encounter unfamiliar words that will add on their vocabulary. The tutors also give
assignments to every student especially on defining the words that are hard for them to
understand.

The tutorial class lasts for 30 minutes that’s why every tutor ensures that every student will
learn within 30 minutes of stay. Time maybe short but it could create a big change in the study
and life of every student.
