About the course
Glass Fibre Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) panel is a relatively
new building product, gaining popularity in the construction
sector across the globe, especially in India. These panels,
with the advantages of rapidity, sustainability and
affordability, have been identified as a potential solution to
address the problem of housing shortage.
GFRG panels, infilled with reinforced concrete (RC), can be
used in the construction of various structural members such
as walls, slabs, staircases, parapet walls, etc. The extensive
research works carried out at IIT Madras, has evaluated the
structural performance of GFRG walls infilled with RC,
GFRG-RC slabs & GFRG stilted construction as well as long
term durability and sustainability of these building systems.
Building Materials & Technology Promotion Council
(BMTPC), with the support of IIT Madras, has already
published ‘GFRG/Rapidwall Building Structural Design
Manual’, ‘Manual on Waterproofing of GFRG/Rapidwall
Buildings’ and ‘Schedule of Items & Rate Analysis for GFRG
construction’ to aid architects, structural engineers,
construction engineers and builders in the structural
design, planning and estimation of GFRG buildings. In
addition, a Manual on method of construction, IS codes on
Specification for GFRG panels and Design of GFRG buildings
are under the final stage of approval.
GFRG building system and method of construction have
been adapted to suit the Indian conditions. So far, more
than 800 GFRG buildings have been constructed in India,
including 40 affordable housing units built by BMTPC,
Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at Nellore, Andhra
Pradesh. Currently, 5 hostel buildings of 4 to 5 storeys and
one residential apartment (1.4 lakh sq. ft built area) in IIT
Tirupati Transit Campus are being constructed using GFRG
panels.
Now, the technology has gained popular acceptance.
However, the success of the technology depends on
efficient and knowledgeable personnel who have sufficient
exposure to GFRG building construction. This course aims
to train professionals with the details of design and
construction of GFRG buildings, including waterproofing
treatment. The three day course also intends to provide
exposure to various activities involved in GFRG
construction, through a full day training in the ongoing
construction of IIT Tirupati campus.
