market leader for ANSI/UL applica-
tions

There is a new generation of Cutler-

Hammer Power Circuit Breakers
that are smaller with higher per-
formance and more versatility.

Magnum DS
Magnum DS Low Voltage Power
Circuit Breakers are designed for
ultimate application flexibility,
with the needs of both the power
distribution equipment user and
the low voltage electrical equip-
ment manufacturer in mind.

For maximum safety, a modern,

through-the-door design permits
access to the breaker levering sys-
tem, trip unit, controls, and indica-
tors with the door closed.

High withstand and interrupting

ratings provide for maximum selec-
tivity and system coordination to
meet the needs of the high avail-
able fault currents on today’s elec-
trical power distribution systems.

One Family 3
July 2003

Three Frame Sizes in One Family

Magnum DS circuit breakers are
available in a family of three
physical frame sizes.

The MDN narrow frame is the

highest performing power circuit
breaker of its size and rating class.
Continuous current ratings are
available from 800 to 1600
amperes (drawout) and 800 to 2000
amperes (fixed mounted).
Withstand and interrupting ratings
are available from 42 to 65 kA at
600Vac. The MDN compact size
allows for application in compact
enclosures of many types.

The MDS standard frame is ideal-

ly suited for the construction of ver-
tically stacked modular ANSI/UL
Switchgear and Switchboards.
Continuous current ratings are
available from 800 to 3200 amperes
in the same frame with uniform 5
inch pole center spacing.
Withstand ratings are available to
85 kA and interrupting ratings to
100 kA at 600 Vac for improved sys-
tem coordination and service conti-
nuity.

The MDS double-wide frame is

ideal for application as main and
tie breakers in high capacity power
distribution systems. Continuous
current ratings are available in 4000
and 5000 amperes. A 6000 rating is
available when the breaker is
applied in a suitably designed and
tested fan cooled enclosure.
Withstand and interrupting ratings
are available to 100 kA at 600Vac
for maximum system coordination
with down stream devices.

4 Smaller Size

More Circuit Breakers

per
Square Foot of Space

The Magnum DS circuit breaker is

significantly smaller than previ-
ous generation open type metal
frame power circuit breakers. High
strength, thermoset composite
resin materials used in the breaker
frame provide increased strength
for higher capacity ratings. This
leads to the design of smaller and
more economic enclosures
using far less critical floor
space.

The modern, through-the-door

design construction results in
enclosures of shallower depth,
while providing three position dra-
wout levering and storage with the
enclosure door closed.

The modular design of the

Magnum DS standard and double-
wide frames is the key to design
simplification and more compact
Switchgear. Two columns of sin-
gle-wide circuit breakers can be
stacked over or under double-wide
breakers with a common riser bus.

6 Drawout Cassettes
July 2003

Three Drawout Cassette Options

MDN Narrow Frame Cassette

The MDN narrow frame circuit

breaker is available in a compact
cassette with horizontal primary
stabs and terminals, making it ideal
for single high compact enclosures.
Optional vertical adapter kits are
available for applications where
bus bar termination in the vertical
plane or multiple stacking of break-
ers is preferred.

Front View (with circuit breaker) Rear View

MDS standard and double-wide

frame circuit breakers are avail-
MDS Universal Cassette
able in two types of cassettes; the
universal and basic cassette. Both
have vertical primary terminal
stabs for interface with the breaker.
A uniform 5 inch pole center spac-
ing makes these cassettes ideal for
applications that require stacking of
multiple circuit breakers in a single
enclosure structure.

The Universal Cassette is avail-

able in 3-pole and 4-pole configura-
tions and is supplied with large flat
primary pre-drilled terminal pads.
This offers maximum flexibility for
the enclosure manufacturer by Front View Rear View
allowing for bus bar termination in (with Optional Shutters)
the horizontal or vertical planes or
from the top or bottom direction. MDS Basic Cassette (with Optional Line and Load Stabs)

The Basic Cassette is designed to

accommodate 3-pole applications
where the enclosure manufacturer
prefers primary terminations with
bus bars in the vertical plane.
Optional vertical bus bar stab kits
are available for purchase or the
enclosure manufacturer can choose
to self-fabricate these stabs as part
of their manufacturing system.

Enclosure Solutions
Cutler-Hammer offers a hierarchy Magnum DS Switchgear Assembly (UL1558 Listed)
of enclosure solutions from
breaker and cassette components
to complete UL Listed Switchgear
Assemblies and Switchboards.
Power distribution equipment man-
ufacturers can apply these solu-
tions to add value based on their
individual capabilities to customize
product for their customers.

Pow-R-Line C UL891 Low

Voltage Switchboards use
Magnum DS breakers for commer-
cial and light industrial applica-
tions.

Magnum DS UL1558 Listed

Low Voltage Switchgear sets
the industry standard for complete
and customized switchgear applica-
tions.

Magnum DS Bare Bones

Switchgear provides an assembly
solution that is as complete as
specified by the OEM, but still has
provisions for added value. “Bare
Bones” Switchgear is generally
provided without enclosure wiring Magnum DS Power Module (UL Recognized)
and includes sufficient blank panel
space and room for OEM added
components. The OEM typically
adds the relaying, metering and
other customized components and
completes the wiring and tests the
complete assembly to customize it
to their customer requirements.

Magnum DS Power Modules

provide a “shell” frame assembly,
which allows for substantial modifi-
cation and value added by the
enclosure manufacturer. Power
modules consist of base metal
structures, compartment cells and
vertical bus. Typically the OEM will
self-fabricate the horizontal bus, the
exterior panels, and the compart-
ment doors. The OEM then assem-
bles the individual structures, adds
the relaying, metering, and other
customized components. Finally
the assembly is wired and tested to
customer requirements.

Manual Operation Magnum DS Circuit Breaker Being Manually Charged

On manually operated circuit
breakers, the closing spring is
charged manually. This is accom-
plished through the use of the front
mounted spring-charge handle. It
takes from 5 to 7 downward strokes
on the handle to complete the
charging process.
Standard manually operated circuit
breakers are closed and opened by
hand using the front mounted
Manual “ON” and Manual “OFF”
buttons respectively. Access to
these buttons can be limited by the
use of an optional, padlockable
cover. Complete access to the
“ON” button can be prevented with
an optional prevent close cover.
Spring and primary contact status
indicator windows are located just
above the pushbuttons.
Optional electrically operated
devices are available to automati-
cally close or trip open manually
operated circuit breakers, and are
field installable. Motor Operator Installed

An optional motor operator is used

to charge the closing spring auto-
matically. It can be field installed in
a manually operated circuit breaker.
Manual circuit breakers are pre-
wired for this addition.
Electrical Operation
The closing spring is charged auto-
matically by the optional motor opera-
tor. It can also be manually charged.
Manual “ON” and Manual “OFF” but-
tons are also provided as described
under manual operation.
Through the use of a mechanical anti-
pump feature, an open circuit breaker
only accepts one attempt to reclose
even if the close command continues,
preventing motor operator burnout. Motor Operator

A standard circuit breaker with electri-

cal operation also has optional electri-
cally operated devices available to
automatically close or trip open the
circuit breaker.

Phasing on Double-Wide Breakers 40
July 2003

Phasing on Double-Wide Frame Magnum DS Double-Wide Frame Breaker with AABBCC Phasing (front and rear views)
Breakers
Magnum DS circuit breakers man-
ufactured in the double-wide frame
have two available phasing config-
urations which must be confirmed
when the breaker is ordered.

The phasing convention is deter-

mined facing the front of the break-
er from left to right. For 4-pole
applications, the neutral is located
on the left and is rated 100% of the
breaker continuous current rating.
The following phasing configura-
tions are available:

3-Pole AABBCC
4-Pole NNAABBCC

3-Pole ABCABC
4-Pole NNABCABC

The type of phasing selected

depends on how the circuit breaker
will be applied in the enclosure and
the type of Cutler-Hammer power
distribution enclosure that it will be
applied in.

AABBCC or NNAABBCC

AABBCC phasing is the convention
commonly used in Cutler-Hammer
Pow-R-Line C Switchboards using
Magnum DS Circuit Breakers.

The AABBCC convention is recom-

of mechanical interlocks are avail-
able to interlock the closing of two
or three Magnum circuit breakers.
The mechanical interlock holds one
or more circuit breakers tripped
(prevents closure) when others are
closed. A lever assembly is mount-
ed on each breaker which inter-
faces with the pole shaft and the
tripper bar. The lever assemblies
are interconnected with either
cables or rods, depending upon the
relative orientation of the breakers.
Rods can be used only when the
circuit breakers to be interlocked
are vertically stacked. Cables can
be used for any orientation of the
breakers. Mechanical interlocks are
available for both fixed and dra-

Tables 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 Magnum DS Factory Installed Current Sensors and Rating Plugs Option for Fixed
or Drawout Circuit Breakers (Character Positions 11 and 12 of Catalog Number)
Depending on the circuit breaker frame type, select current sensors and rating plugs from Tables 3.4, 3.5 or 3.6. One current sensor per phase and one
rating plug are included as standard with all fixed and drawout circuit breakers unless a circuit breaker is non-automatic. Select NN for character posi-
tions 11 and 12 if the circuit breaker is non-automatic (without integral trip unit protection). Select the current sensor and rating plug rating by circuit
breaker frame size. For 3-pole circuit breaker ground fault applications on 3-phase, 4-wire circuits, external neutral mounted current sensors must be
ordered separately.
