(Q1.) What do you mean “green economy”? Why it is termed “green”?

The concept of green economy came in existence all over the world for over 6 decades since
developed nations identified the importance of the protection of the environment for the well being of
the present generation and so many generations come in the future. Thus, the concept of green
economy was propagated all over the world. Green economy means conducting economic activity up
holding the integrity of the environment.

It is term green, because the vegetation on the earth is green and protection of flora and fauna
of the forest are green. If whole world is green, it means environmentally fully protected.

Discuss how you implement concept of green economy and sustainable development in our society.

Since we received our independence in the year 1948, Sri Lanka was covered by forests to the
extent of 60% of the land mass. In that era, there had been proper rainfall at the right season of the
year and rainfall precipitation was uniform. The uniform precipitation rarely brought about flood and
consequent devastation of human settlements. Going back to history of Sri Lanka, there had been
flood caused by precipitation in the year 1948, 1957 and 1967. Since then, the flood experienced in
Sri Lanka was not devastating. Anyone who studies rainfall pattern of Sri Lanka over period of 5
decades can see that the annual precipitation is in a declining and zigzag (haphazard) pattern. During
the past decade, the rainfall precipitation has never been uniform, sudden and heavy showers
experienced. With in the period of 2 hours, caused flooded roads and discomfort to every body. The
climate change and lesser precipitation have been attributed to destruction of our green environment.
Thus it is necessary the present government pay more attention than what they do to protect the green
environment.

It is necessary that more legislation is enacted to protect our green environment by suitable
protection measures giving incentive to people who up hold and protect our green environment.
Government should pass law to reforestation of areas which has lost environmental values. Sri Lanka
being a tropical country and it should focus more on agricultural industry rater than developing
industries which burn fossil fuel which animates green house gases to the environment. On the other
hand, even the industries are to be established, they should be environmentally friendly, mitigating
emission of green house gasses. To achieve a sustainable economy, Sri Lanka is required to embark
on agro base industries, animal husbandry and like.

The law enforces should courage to implement legislation and provide resources to develop a
green economy. In this exercise, it is necessary that harmful fertilizers ban in applying in the paddy
field or agricultural lands. The effect this usage with chemicals has brought about kidney diseases on
north central province in Sri Lanka. In upholding green environment and sustainable development, it
is necessary that we not only protect flora and fauna, but also the soil of the country free from
deposition of heavy metals which are harmful to growth of flora and fauna. It is also necessary that
we take steps to promulgate concept of green economy and sustainable development and live this
world for the benefit of future generations.
