Universal Design for Learning (UDL): To incorporate some Universal Design for Learning elements
into this lesson, I will allow students to use the “Big Keys” keyboard, which is an enlarged keyboard
where the keys are highly-visible. This can help students struggling to type, or students with visual
impairments that have trouble seeing the small keys. I will have several of these available during
this lesson, so they are accessible to students if needed.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will implement this lesson during a unit where students can read an approved book of their
choice. I will tell the students that they are going to be creating a newsletter using Microsoft Word
to tell us about their book. In this newsletter, they need to explain the main idea of the book, as
well as key details from the book that support their main idea. Students will have three days
during Reading/ELA to complete this newsletter. I will assess the newsletter by a rubric, checking
for content, grammar, and overall design. Student learning will be assessed on how well they
explain the content on their newsletter.
The final product will be printed out and displayed outside our classroom, so other students
can be informed about different books. If I wanted to extend the learning to a higher level, I could
ask students to identify the rising action, falling action, and resolution of the story. To conclude
this lesson, students will have a Show-and-Tell, where they bring their book in along with their
printed newsletter. To provide feedback to each student, I will use the markup feature on Microsoft
Word, where I can make edits to student work and add comments so that the students can go back
and look at the feedback.

Reflective Practice: The activity that I created supports student learning by using technology to
determine the main idea of a text, and support it by key details. Students will have the
opportunity and freedom to design their newsletter, within the template provided by Microsoft
Word. To further extend this lesson, I could make a classroom newspaper, and add each students
newsletter. I could send this newspaper home to parents, so they are able to view their child’s
newsletter, along with their classmates. If I wanted to incorporate another productivity tool into
this lesson, I could have students use PowerPoint to create a presentation that they would show
their class to further explain their book.
