 Introduction

The relation between literature and humour present in it is intrinsic and is of very importance.
Before analysing this relation, first let us understand the scope of word ‘humour’. Humour,
depending on the level of comprehension of the audience to which it is directed, may be
divided in three levels for analysis. There is a universal humour that can be understood by
everybody, without regard to culture or formal education. This humour, generally known as
physical comedy, is of the cinematic or visual type, it is the humour in the silent movies, the
early theatre and the circus1. I have called this kind of humour visual because it is usually
concerned with images. Humour at the second level need not be as visual as on the first level.
Sexual, political, or religious jokes, where humour acts as a relief from repression or
inhibition, belong here. This kind of humour has a close relationship with repression; it is
also connected to the culture. It is necessary to be familiar with the culture's values and
restrictions in order to enjoy the joke. Sexual humour connects with scatological humour, but
requires a higher level of understanding or maturity. Comic types belong in this second level
of humour. The third level of humour requires a high command of language and its stylistic
devices. Its main channel of expression is irony. The audience for this sophisticated humour
is cultivated and refined. In it we distinguish two kinds: compassionate, directed to the heart;
intellectual, directed to the mind. It is an elitist or high class humour. The humour of the third
level never loses its touch of class and charity. (Teresa Guerra Gloss, 1989)

The major area covered in this research project is second level humour, i.e., jokes
related to a certain category of people, which in present cases are lawyers/ attorneys (or to
use politically correct statements all persons falling within the ambit of legal profession).
From time immemorial ‘law’ been an intrinsic part of society and thus has been mentioned in
literature which was in itself a reflector of societal relation and hence the whole notion of
justice delivery gained a divine reputation in which its delivers (judges and lawyers) became
synonymous of noble and intellectual beings 2. But with due course of time the entire legal
profession become less legitimized and also coupled with misconception of people and thus
become centre to humour writings and jokes. The legal profession is one of the oldest and big

victims of general misconception of society as a whole; also this has led to categorization of
legal profession for future3.

It is so because these set of humour writings are sort of informal writings and thus have
a variety of readership which leads to this effect of misconception to act as a multi-fold
disease affecting the general perception of all towards the legal professionals. Despite being
in the centre of humour writings, legal professionals have continued to work and thrive
without any major backlash from the society in general and also it in no way has affected
there efficiency.

Methodology

This project is based on collecting various jokes, anecdote etc. and analysing the first hand
impression about legal system/legal professionals. The data was collected from various
sources but mainly from internet. The groundwork of this project started with collection of
jokes, humour writings through diverse references so as to incorporate a wider section of
data. But for practical purpose of analyzing the overall impression thus perceived by a
layman having no prior knowledge of actual legal system, the various available
interpretations of their creations have been studied for the better understanding of the concept
which is conveyed by these humour writings and thus the researcher tried to develop an
understanding of his own (since it is universally accepted that a single anecdote can have
plural meanings, depending upon the knowledge and background of interpreter). Full care has
been taken to acknowledge the works of creator wherever possible by giving source and
references.

The crux of this research project is 'Observation Table' which in itself is versatile enough
to incorporate many dimensions of this project especially the part concerned with 'Analyzing'
the impression conveyed about the entire legal system . This analysis has been done in simple
but easily comprehendible languages so as to make the underlying concept afloat and not to
bury it under complex legalese description.

 Utmost care has been taken to stick to the prescribed format, but changes were made
wherever sought necessary. Throughout the project different research tools were used, some
worth mentioning are Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Microsoft Office Excel 2007, which
helped to enrich this research work by giving a user-friendly interface for systemizing the
doctrinal research done. Proper forethought has been given to research right from its
inception especially regarding to guideline(s) given. It was due to these flexible guidelines
that this project could expand its boundaries wherever possible.

professionals is considered in the sample considered.

 Conclusion
After three fold analysis of collected data, it can be concluded that the most targeted aspect or
most talked about feature of jokes based on legal professionals are their ‘manipulative
nature’, this manipulative nature varies to great level. For example, they can manipulate the
interpretation of any statutory language so as to seek benefit for their clients, which may be
just or unjust in the eyes of law. Also, the manipulative nature of law professional can be
seen in their everyday life when they interact with other spectrum of other people and try to
gain most from any encounter. But this manipulative nature is of significant importance to
corporate world as many policies and rules are to be framed in such a way that the consumer
can be easily fooled, and at such instances it is the manipulative skills of lawyers which
rescue them and help them to earn surplus.

The other themes which can be seen expressly in the collected samples were that in general
society is sceptic about lawyers and does not respect their professional ethics. Such an
attitude of society is based upon many factors, such as they being manipulative, money
centric and their dishonest professional ethics contribute to society’s disillusion towards the
legal professionals in general. Also the disrepute of society towards legal professional can be
also due to fine manners and professionalism which is always exhibited by lawyers, even in
their everyday life leading to alienation of general public and hence such an image of legal
professionals.

Another significant joked attribute of legal professionals is their money centric attitude. This
feature is very much evident from the manners in which they deal with clients and parties, no
matter if they win the case or loose it they charge the same fees moreover that too in advance,
so many jokes cater to them that if a person employs a lawyers he is bound to loose a hefty
amount of money not particularly due to high fees but due to the abilities of lawyers to
literally extort money of clients by manipulating things which is guided by underlying money
centric attitude.

Considering the other things which are also targeted are the dishonest ways exhibited by
many legal professional in the legal practises which also involves judiciary. Also there is a
general perception among people that there is dearth of actual work in legal world which is
just one of the misconceptions of society.
