Result : result of code checking (Pass/Fail) for the member number design according to the provisions for
Allowable Strength Design (ASD) satisfies the requirement of the unified code specification
when the allowable strength of each component equal or exceeds the required strength.
Ra < Rn/Ω
Where,
Ra = required strength (ASD)
Rn = nominal strength
W = safety factor
Rn/Ω = allowable strength
Critical Cond : critical condition which govern and the corresponding ratio and location.
Clause : clause classification from AISC, steel design are classified as design of member for axial and
flexural (Clause H1), design of member for shear (clause G), design of member
compression(Clause E), design of member for tensile strength (Clause D2).
Ratio : ratio of actual stresses to allowable stresses for critical condition, normally a value of 1.0 or less
will mean the member has passed.
Location : location specifies the actual distance from the start of member to the section
where design forces govern.
Loading(L/C) : load corresponding to the critical condition from load combination at the critical location.
Section Class : section classification, steel section are classified as compact, non-compact or
slender element section.
Slenderness :
slenderness ratio, STAAD immediately does a slenderness check on appropriate member before
continuing with other procedures for determining the adequacy of given member.

slenderness ratio, STAAD immediately does a slenderness check on appropriate member before
continuing with other procedures for determining the adequacy of given member.
For member designed on the basis of compression, the slenderness ratio KL/r preferably should
not exceed 200.
For member designed on the basis of tension, the slenderness ratio L/r preferably should not
exceed 300.
This suggestion does not apply to rods or hangers in tension.

- Post column is connected to upper and lower beams with end plate and bolt.
- End plate plate is welded to support on both side of post column and bolted to the supported beam member.
- This connection applied when column is modeled as pinned and connected to beam flange as support.

• Design Strength
• General Interaction
(Vu / f Vn) £ 1.0
(Pu / f Pn) £ 1.0 ……. Compression Only
Note: When supporting element is relatively thin or edge distance of bolt is shorter than considered value "Lc",
its bearing strength shall be checked separately.
Ag depends on the axis of the dominant horizontal force. (Refer to Figure 1.0 for Member Axis)
• Welding Design
lw depends on the axis of the dominant horizontal force. (Refer to Figure 1.0 for Member Axis)
Along Y-Axis , lw = 2 * ( H - 2 * tf - 2 * 25 ) (H-Shapes)
lw = 2 * ( H - 2 * tf ) (Channels)
Along Z-Axis , lw = 4 * B
