Beyond Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Graphing with Ratios

Content Area: Ratios
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and
mathematical problems. MGSE6.RP.3a Make tables of equivalent ratios

Technology Standard Addressed: 4a. Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating
ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

Selected Technology Tool: Inspiration 9

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The UDL that will be accessible for this lesson are: large keyboards and
track pads for those students who require assistance when using the computer. There is also an option to
enlarge texts for those who are visually impaired.

Lesson idea implementation:

Inspiration 9 allows students to use computer applications in creating a flow chart in order to present their
problem to the class. Students will solve real-world and mathematical problems using diagrams to explain.
The product will be introduced after the students have learned what ratios are and have watched the Brain
Pop video and gone through the PowerPoint. This should take the rest of class to finish and the following
class. Student learning will be assessed based on how complex their graphs are and the content they place in
it. They will also be graded on how engaged they keep the class with their information. There will be a rubric
provided to the groups for them to follow so they will have an idea of how many and what needs to be in
their graph.
Students will present their final product to the class and ask/receive questions. Since each problem will be a
different topic, this will help the rest of the class understand other real world ways to use ratios and why they
are important. It differentiates learning by creating an atmosphere where students want to learn as they are
in control of the topic and how they will teach the class. In order to extend the students to a higher level of
learning, I will encourage them to think outside the box and engage in more complex flow charts/graphs
within Inspiration 9.
Concluding the lesson will be on the following day after all students have presented their ratio projects. After
each group presents, we will have a question/answer session where we will also provide feedback as a group
to the presenters. What did everyone like about the presentation? What did they take away from the
situation?

Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson, the impact on student learning incorporated their own interests and gave them a
chance to use each other for ideas and work as a group. The problem with group projects that I will have to

watch out for is to make sure all students are pulling their weight. There will be a chance for students to
provide me feedback as well on the project and in that, they will be able to speak their mind on how
members of the group contributed. In order to enhance this lesson, we could add more technology and give
them a chance to explore other graphing cites.
