Tournament Recommendation Assignment

Part 1:
Read the attached information on different types of tournaments. Complete the advantages and
disadvantages section for each type of tournament. You will need to fill all bullets and may add
more as you see fit.

Based on the information you have read and analyzed you are now required to make a
recommendation for a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament held over 4 days.

For this assignment you must provide a specific recommendation with a rationale that illustrates
your understanding of the advantage and limitations of the different types of tournaments. For
this assignment, assume two different scenarios:
● Scenario 1 - Five teams registered for the event
● Scenario 2 - Ten teams registered for the event

Round Robin Format

2. Justify.explain your recommendation. In answering this question, you are required to

make two to three specific points to support your recommendation. (8 marks)

I chose Round Robin format because if there are only 5 teams to register it is most fair for
each team to play each other one time to get the most accurate standings possible. As Well
with only 5 teams it is manageable for each team to play each other once without the teams
having to play an outrageous amount of teams. Also no teams are eliminated right away and
are able to get their money's worth with still playing a few games.

3. What limitations or disadvantages will our class potentially face in implementing this
recommendation? (4 marks)

The disadvantages our class could face when implementing a round robin tournament
include, it requires many games to run a round robin and could make the tournament a lot
longer than for example a single elimination type tournament would.

My recommendation for a 10 team tournament would be the Single Elimination Tournament.

2. Justify.explain your recommendation. In answering this question, you are required to

make two to three specific points to support your recommendation. (8 marks)

I chose the single elimination tournament because firstly it is easiest to run with large
numbers. It will be easy to coordinate 10 teams signing up and easy to understand. Lastly,
with many games being played at once it allows for a great use of facilities.

3. What limitations or disadvantages will our class potentially face in implementing this
recommendation? (4 marks)

The first drawback to running a single elimination tournament is that games may not be close
because high seeded teams will be playing lower seeded teams. Aswell it requires many
games and will result in a very long tournament.
