CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

If.unless(if not)should.but for.without.


Conditional sentences have four types or patterns
I-zero conditional
If+present simple......present simple
Should +present simple...present simple
If+present simple...imperative.
If you heat ice'it turns into water.
Should you heat ice'it turns into water.
If you see Sue,tell her to phone me.
If you know the answer,raise your hand.
II-pattern
If+present simple...will(shall.may.can)+v1
(Possible)
If you eat too much,you will get fat.
You will get fat if you eat too much.
If Sue doesn't study hard,she won't get high marks.
I will go mad if I think too much.
If a beggar asks you for money,will you give him any?
Will it worry you if I play the piano?
If it is necessary,I can come at seven.
Unless you give me that pen immediately,I will throw that book at you.
Unless the strike ends ,we will have no bread tomorrow.
Unless you study hard ,you will fail the exam.
Unless you find a seat soon,there won't be anyone left.
Should that happen again,she will be very sad.
Should a storm arise suddenly,we can find a shelter easily.
Should it prove to be true,I shall sell all my shares immediately.
III-pattern
If+v2......would(should.might.could)+v1(probable)
If you studied hard,you would get high mafks.
If you didn't study hard,you would fail the exam.
If she met a handsome young man,you wouldn't see her again.
If I met a flesh-eating creature,it wouldn't kill me unless I came quite in its way.
If I could find a better job,I would leave tomorrow.
We can omit if and say
Were I rich I would buy an expensive car.
Were I in your shoes I wouldn't do it.
IV-pattern.
If+had+p.p. ...would(could.should..might)+have+v3
(Impossible)
If he had studied hard,he would have got high marks
If he had asked for my hand,I would have rejected him.
I might have learnt more english if I had gone to London.
The child would have been killed if the car hadn't stopped
