Public Works Studio
Public Works is a multidisciplinary research and design studio that
engages critically and creatively with a number of urban and public
issues. The studio initiates projects that study, shape and
implement counter strategies to urban planning and policy making
in Lebanon. It also offers commissioned professional services in
graphic design, architecture, development planning and
consultancy within a communal work environment.

Beirut Design Week

Established in 2012, Beirut Design Week is the largest growing design festival
in the Middle East & North Africa. Bringing together more than 25,000 visitors
at over 150 events in various locations around Beirut, BDW, now in its seventh
consecutive year, showcases the best of Lebanese and international design in
order to strengthen creative economies and foster entrepreneurship, all within
the context of region’s rich cultural heritage. BDW is initiated and organized
by the MENA Design Research Center, a non-profit organization, which
focuses on promoting a diverse understanding of design in the region through
collaborative multidisciplinary projects and rigorous design research.
In 2018, Beirut Design Week (BDW) returns for its seventh
edition themed «Design and the City: ___________». Under this
theme, designers are invited alongside activists, writers,
educators, students etc. to consider design’s transformative
role in conceiving of the urban space in such ways that
express our needs, desires and dreams as inhabitants of the city.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Co-curated by Public Works Studio and Beirut Design Week, the
Forum on Cities and Designers is a platform where designers
engaged with urban issues are invited to critically reflect on their
practice. Through an exhibition, panels and workshops, the Forum
will focus on questions of representation (tools, methods, politics) and
production (positionality, labor, ethics) in design and research.
The Forum departs from a recognition that any urban design activity
dialectically engages/produces three social spaces:
First, the disciplinary space of the studio or office, equipped with its
particular tools of representation and production. We are referring
here to drawings, designs, and decisions made by “experts” (i.e.
architects, engineers, designers, government planning officials and
others).
Second, the space of the design and planning intervention (its site,
immediate, and wider context). This is a space that is continuously
evolving through environmental changes, social relations, and access
to resources.
Third, the space of the positioned self, namely the designer’s
positionality within economic, political, professional and social
realms. Positionality plays a central role in the designer’s relation to
his/her site and stakeholders and consequently in how design is
approached, thought of and practiced.
The aim of the Forum is to understand design as a practice that is
produced by the interaction between these three spaces and the
actors that inhabit them respectively. As such, the material presented
aims to render explicit the various voices, networks, processes and
economies that surround it.

MIND THE MAP – exhibition
This exhibition features works that revisit the ways designers collect,
represent and communicate data. Focused on physical and digital
mapping tools and methodologies, the exhibition aims to stimulate
critical takes on and conversations about the processes, politics and

Practitioners are invited to critically reflect on their positionality (social,
economic, professional) in a particular design project or practice.
As many questions and concerns arise in our respective practices
in relation to ethics, hierarchies, stakeholders’ participation and
positionality, this panel will provide the space to articulate these
issues, identify spaces of possibility, and collectively re-think design

SLOW-HACKING BEIRUT’S BUS MAP – slow-hack workshop
The Bus Map Project team will be leading this slow-hack workshop,
where participants are invited to share their skills, ideas and insights
around the issue of public transportation in Lebanon. The workshop
aims to start a conversation and explore possible longer-term
collaborations on issues of information accessibility and networking.
It is an invitation to people from all and no disciplines to join the
conversation about the unlocked potentials of Beirut’s and Lebanon’s
shared transport.

REMEMBERING WATER, REIMAGINING THE CITY – workshop

Almost all large cities have at some point in time tried to tame their
rivers and streams. This has solved some problems but created
others, which has led many cities to try and reverse this trend. The
imagining and images designers and architects create are powerful
tools of change in urban planning and a first step to move policy
makers, engineers and the public towards a more sustainable water
management practice. This workshop will explore different urban
water management projects and the challenges facing Beirut and
Lebanon.

MAPPING THE CITY: SODECO – workshop
German designers Marc Andrews and Christian Degen will explore

Abir Saksouk is an architect and
urban planner, and co-founder of Public
Works, a multidisciplinary research and
design studio that engages critically
and creatively with a number of urban
and public issues. The studio initiates
research projects that study, shape and
implement counter strategies to urban
planning and policy making in Lebanon.
It also offers commissioned professional
services in graphic design, architecture,
development planning and consultancy
within a communal work environment.
Adriana Basbous is a scientist
and engineer. She holds a BSc. and
MSc. in mechanical engineering with
a focus on fluid dynamics from the
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de
Lausanne. She examines means of
documenting and modelling different
kinds of structures, from machines
and mechanisms to human dialogue
and natural phenomena. Through
design and fabrication, she currently
situates her practice at the intersection
of technical and creative work. Using
these processes Adriana explores
possibilities of translating observations
and knowledges into optimisation,
subversion and innovation.
Ahmad Gharbieh is Assistant
Professor in the Department of
Architecture and Design at the American
University of Beirut. Trained in graphic
design and urban sociology, his
scholarly work explores mapping as a
method of researching, representing and
analyzing socio-spatial phenomena. His
work in critical cartography has covered
many subjects including urban security,
public space and, most recently, refugee
practices in the city, and has been
exhibited in Beirut, Barcelona, Berlin,
Paris, Rotterdam, and Sharjah.

The Social Justice and the City program
(SJC) aims to formulate an agenda
for urban research and exchanges
in partnership with scholars, policy-
makers, and activists in Lebanon (and
beyond) working towards more inclusive
cities. Over the past two years, the
program has worked on questions
of housing, urban renewal, public and
shared spaces, forced population
displacement, urban social movements,
and more. 
Ahmad Gharbieh is assistant professor
of graphic design at the Department of
Architecture and Design (ArD), American
University of Beirut (AUB). Monica
Basbous is a spatial analyst and
designer, currently a member of Public
Works Studio and a part-time instructor
of architectural design at the Lebanese
American University. Ahmad and Monica
led the visualization work on this project.
Mona Fawaz is professor of
urban studies and planning, and
the coordinator of the Masters in
Urban Planning and Policy / Urban
Design programs at ArD/AUB. Dounia
Salamé is a researcher in urban
issues and currently the coordinator
of SJC. Mona and Dounia were lead-
researchers on this project.
Bus Map Project is a grassroots
initiative seeking to map, promote and
improve public transport in Lebanon,
launched in July 2015. Our mission is to
mobilize a community of bus users that
is well-informed and well-connected,
working with others – producers,
consumers and decision-makers – for
the benefit of all.
Christian Degen (1978, Kleve,
Germany) is co-founding partner of
andrews:degen and works since
2008 in Amsterdam. He studied
graphic design in Cologne, Utrecht
and Barcelona. Besides he teaches
communication and multimedia design
at the Amsterdam University of Applied
Sciences and provides lectures and
workshops on social design at several
international art schools and design
festivals.
DATA4CHAN.GE is a London-based
not-for profit that helps helps NGOs
humanise data by connecting them
with global and local creatives to forge
real change. Since 2014 nearly 200
people from more than 30 countries
have attended our data visualisation
workshops in London, Kampala and
and most notably Beirut, where we have
held three events. These workshop
have resulted in powerful data driven
advocacy campaigns on topics such
as sexual harassment, government
corruption, LGBT rights, and more.

Elisabetta Pietrostefani is an urban
researcher currently based in Beirut.
She is a PhD candidate in Urban
Planning at the London School of
Economics, where her research focuses
on evaluating local urban policy. She
is also currently a Visiting Researcher
at AUB, based at the Neighbourhood
Initiative. Her research interests include
city governance and local planning,
reuse of urban spaces and resilient
actions in cities of the Global South.
She has developed Urban Experiment’s
research design for the Beiruti context.
Hussam Hawwa (Difaf) is an
agriculture & biosystems Engineer
with masters in rural development
and integrated water resources
management. More than 10 years’
experience in water, wastewater, and
environmental sectors with focus on
management, treatment, restoration,
and designing of sustainable solutions.
Founder of Difaf, an environmental
consultancy and technical design
bureau focused on improving water and
environmental resources through holistic
assessments and technical-social
interventions.
Jimmy Elias is a design researcher
and a digital consultant. He holds
an MA in Integrated Design from
Köln International School of Design
and comes from a career in visual
communication, design research and
academic teaching. He co-founded
nimslabs design studio and worked as
a digital designer at Saatchi & Saatchi.
In the past years, Jimmy emphasised
on crafting experiences in the digital
sphere, leading digital concepts for
clients such as Nike, Mazda, and
Covestro. Being enthusiastic about the
multidisciplinary approach to design,
Jimmy initiates and collaborates on
research projects alongside being a
public speaker. At present, he is Senior
Experience Designer at Publicis.Sapient
and focuses on research, strategy and
UX: designing digital experiences for
international brands.
Lilmadina Initiative is a collective of
researchers, professionals, residents
and community activists residing in
the Greater Saida Region. Lil-madina
engages in various research, design
and advocacy activities relating to
protecting the natural environment/
cultural heritage, resisting problematic
planning projects as well as developing
alternative visions/policies for the
Greater Saida Region.
Maha Issa (Atelier Hamra) is an
architect by training and landscape
architect by practice. Maha was part
of the the landscape architecture firm
“AgenceTer” in Paris for five years
up till 2005. Co-founder, with Gamar
Markarian, of Atelier Hamra in 2008:
a multidisciplinary and open design
practice allowing for experiments in
architecture and landscape architecture.
We collaborate with engineers,
hydrologists, botanists (and others) to
propose the most responsive design to
a site. Our projects are developed with
a constant concern for sustainability,
ecology and water management.
In parallel to our practice, we are
strong believers in the social role and
responsibility of a landscape architect,
and are often reflecting on issues
regarding public space, access to play
areas, and green areas within the city.
Greening Bourj Al Shamali aims to
green and improve the living conditions
in Bourj Al Shamali refugee camp in
south Lebanon. We operate under
the wing of Beit Atfal Assoumoud
and Al Houla Association in Bourj Al
Shamali. Our main objectives are to
create a green space in the camp
and to promote urban agriculture; as
a first step we created a map of the
camp working with a local youth citizen
science team. With Mahmoud Al
Joumma, Mustapha Dakhloul, Firas
Ismail, Marwan Kaabour & Claudia
Martinez Mansell.
Majd Al Shihabi is a systems design
engineer, applying the craft of systems
thinking to urban systems, and to
building web platforms with a focus on
user experience. He has a particular
interest in archives, archival maps,
oral histories, digital representations,
alternative forms of knowledge
production and dissemination, and
freedom of knowledge. Majd is currently
the Bassel Khartabil Free Culture fellow,
and an urban planning and policy
graduate student.
Marc Andrews (1978, Kleve,
Germany) is also a co-founding partner
of andrews:degen and is a social
psychologist and designer. He lives since
more then 20 years in the Netherlands. He
bundled his interests and passion about
visual communication and psychology in
the book ‘Hidden Persuasion’ published
by BIS Publishers. Further he coaches
young designers in their final projects
at the faculty of Multimedia Design in
Amsterdam and organises Social Design
Workshops around the globe.
Mustapha Jundi (b. 1976, Tripoli,
Lebanon) is an architect and artist
based in Beirut. His work focuses on
the processes of the built environment in
its larger context and more specifically,
in regards to its relationship with nature.
He employs different mediums including
video, text and objects.
Nour Madi is a practicing Civil Engineer
working in Beirut. She obtained her
undergraduate Civil Engineering
Degree with a minor in Engineering
Management from AUB. Her interest
in the recycling of construction waste
focusing on concrete rubble began
during her undergraduate studies. Today
her research is ongoing, building on her
master dissertation titled: A GIS based
Framework for The Management of
Construction and Demolition Materials –
The Case of Syria, completed in 2016.
Together with Ghaith Abi Ghanem
and Jad Melki, co-founders of
GHAITH&JAD architecture and design
studio, they developed “Recovering
Topographies” a project that was
awarded the Next Generation Lafarge
Holcim Award 2017 - creating a civic
engagement and concrete recycling
facility for post conflict situations. Both
Ghaith and Jad received their degrees
in architecture from AUB in 2012. They
continue their design explorations
through their studio at Mansion, a
reclaimed 19th century residence that
houses multidisciplinary designers under
one roof.
Public Works Studio, the Order of
Engineers and Architects and UN-
Habitat are collaborating in organizing
and launching the first competition
for housing and alternative building
practices in Beirut; under the patronage
of the Public Corporation for Housing.
Saba Innab is an architect, urban
researcher, and artist practicing out
of Amman and Beirut. She holds a
Bachelor of Architecture Engineering
from the Jordan University of Science
and Technology. Innab has worked
as an architect with UNRWA on
the reconstruction of Nahr el Bared
Palestinian refugee Camp in the North
of Lebanon, a project nominated for
the Aga Khan Award for Architecture
in 2013. In 2014, she received the
visiting research fellowship initiated by
Studio-X Amman (Columbia Graduate
School of Architecture, Planning
and Preservation). Through painting,
mapping, sculpture, models and design,
her work explores the suspended states
between temporality and permanence,
and is concerned with variable notions
of dwelling and building and their
political, spatial and poetic implications
in architecture. Her work was recently
exhibited in Milan Arch Week in La
Triennale di Milano (2018) Biennale
d’Architecture d’Orléans- France (2017)
and Marrakech Biennial (2016) amongst
others
Samar Kanafani is a researcher
residing and working in Beirut. Her
recent interests include urban renewal,
decay and dwelling as well as urban
heritage and commoning. Her previous
work dealt with nationalism, migration,
gender and the body. She has a
PhD in social anthropology from the
University of Manchester (UM). Her
recent article on the politics of parking
in Beirut titled, “On Deference and
Benevolence,” came out in the Arab
Studies Journal (2017). Based on
her MA thesis, her article, “Leaving
Mother-land: The Anti-Feminine in
Fida’i Narratives,” on masculinity and
Palestinian freedom fighting, appeared
in Identities (2008). She co-edited a
special issue of Contemporary Levant
titled “Ethnography as Knowledge
in the Arab Region” (2017). She has
taught anthropology, sociology and
urban theory at the American University
of Beirut (AUB) and at UM. She is
presently a postdoctoral fellow with the
Arab Council for Social Sciences, with
affiliation to Social Justice in the City
program at AUB’s Issam Fares Institute
of Public Policy and International Affairs.
Samer Chinder is currently the “Area
Coordinator” of UN-HABITAT in North
Lebanon. He graduated with a Bachelor
Degree in Architecture from the
American University of Beirut in 2015.
Since his graduation, Samer worked
on several architectural and urban
design projects in and outside Lebanon
and participated and won several
architecture competitions.
He organized, in collaboration with the
Order of Engineers and Architects, the
Abi Samra Public Space competition
for architecture university students and
he participated in juries and symposia
in various architecture institutions
around Lebanon. In his time with UN-
HABITAT, he was part of the design
and implementation teams for several
public space projects, namely: ABJAD
socio-cultural center, the rehabilitation of
souk al Albisa, Haddadine public space,
Nabaa public space and Qobbe public
space.
SMEX is an organization that promotes
and defends digital freedoms and
rights in Lebanon and across the
Arabic speaking countries. Its scope
of work ranges from research on
privacy, data protection, and freedom
of expression, to local and regional
advocacy campaigns. SMEX is
currently organizing and hosting the first
digital rights event in the region next
November.
Tharan Fergus is a hydrologist
based in Oslo Noway, with 25 years
of experience in flood and erosion
management and river restoration. She
is currently working for City of Oslo,
Agency for Water and Wastewater
Services as project developer for
‘water in the city’ projects: urban river
restoration and sustainable stormwater
management.
theOtherDada
Active since 2010, theOtherDada
defends an alternative position
towards the current practice of
sustainability through exploration of
the context and medium, invoking
new relationships between climate,
landscape, and inhabitants. Informed
by our research into biomimicry,
we aim to connect to the natural
ecosystems of sites to understand
and consequently devise new potential
living habitats. theOtherDada works
within a collaborative process between
architects, scientists, botanists, artists,
economists and the craftsmen. We
provide several services including
Architecture and Interior Design,
Landscape Design, as well as Strategic
Consulting and Planning.
Urban Experiment is a pilot research
platform founded by Pablo Navarrete.
It uses online experimental design
techniques to measure how urban
changes and interventions impact
citizen perception of quality of life.
Experimental design and bio-metric
measurements help us produce reliable
estimates of perceived improvement/
deterioration of the urban environment,
which then inform urban design policy
recommendations. Our aim is to
enhance everyday urban experiences,
providing objective planning tools that
can help identify urban projects that
truly enhance citizen quality of life.
