o General Vector, B:
o Magnitude of B: | | √
o Unit Vector in the
Direction of B: | |

 VECTOR FIELD
- We are accustomed to thinking of a specific vector:

- A vector field is a function defined in space that has a magnitude and direction at all
points:
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )
Where ( )
 THE DOT PRODUCT
- Given two vectors A and B, the dot product, or scalar product, is defined as the
product of the magnitude of A, the magnitude of B, and the cosine of the smaller
angle between them,
| || |

Commutative Law:
 Operational Use of the Dot Product

 THE CROSS PRODUCT

- The cross product A X B is a vector; the magnitude of A X B is equal to the product of
the magnitudes of A, B, and the sine of the smaller angle between A and B; the
direction of A X B is perpendicular to the plane containing A and B and is along that
one of the two possible perpendiculars which is in the direction of advance of a
right-handed screw as A is turned into B.

 Operational Definition of the CROSS PRODUCT IN RECTANGULAR COMPONENTS

 Orthogonal UNIT VECTORS IN CYLINDRICAL COORDINATES

 Point Transformations in Cylindrical Coordinates

 Dot Products of Unit Vectors in Cylindrical and Rectangular Coordinate Systems

Electric Field Intensity and Coulomb's Law

 COULOMB’S LAW
- The magnitude of the electrostatic force of attraction or repulsion between two point
charges is directly proportional to the product of the magnitudes of charges and inversely
proportional to the square of the distance between them. The force is along the straight line
joining them.

 Net Force on a charge due to a several other charges

 ELECTRIC FIELD INTENSITY

- Is a field that surrounds electric charges. It represents charges attracting or repelling other
electric charges by exerting force.
 Superposition

 UNIFORM ELECTRIC FIELD

Electric Flux Density and Gauss’s Law

 ELECTRIC FLUX DENSITY

- Is a measure of the strength of an electric field generated by a free electric charge,
corresponding to the number of electric lines of force passing through a given area. Electric
flux density is the amount of flux passing through a defined area that is perpendicular to the
direction of the flux.

 GAUSS’S LAW
- The total of the electric flux out of a closed surface is equal to the charge enclosed divided
by the permittivity. The electric flux through an area is defined as the electric field
multiplied by the area of the surface projected in a plane perpendicular to the field.
Energy and Potential

 ELECTRIC POTENTIAL ENERGY

- Is the amount of work needed to move a unit positive charge from a reference point to a
specific point inside the field without producing any acceleration.

 EQUIPOTENTIAL

 ELECTRIC POTENTIAL DUE TO A POINT CHARGE
