This design note pertains to 'Design of superstructure of ROB over Harbour Railway'.
The span of this bridge is about 60m and the total width of the bridge is 17.2m containing two carriageways
of 7.5m each and central median of 1.2m wide. Superstructure consists of plate girders with insitu concrete
deck slabs cast on deck sheets and integrated through shear connectors. The superstructure comprise of
6 girders placed at 3m C/C. Individual plate girders are connected in plan with intermediate diaphragms.
Each plate girder will be fabricated in segments of less than 12m length. These segments shall be paired
with adjecent girder with intermediate diaphragms and part of end diaphragm prior to erection. This assembly
of two girders in segments will then be erected on temporary intermediate trestles and connected with
bolt splices to such assemblies at site to form the girder system.
This design note gives the structural design of the plate girder section, Intermediate diaphragms, end
diaphragm and splices. The structuaral design is based on relevant IRC codes
and 'Working stress Method' of design.
1.0 GENERAL
The layout plan and General Arrangement of the bridge is as per General Arrangement Drawing .
This note pertains to design of steel girder superstructure.

4.1 CHECK FOR SLENDERNESS RATIO OF TOP COMPRESSION FLANGE -All Girders G1 to G6
For Selfweight and Deck slab loads
As the deck slab is a composite with steel girders, compression flange is fully laterally supported.

0 GENERAL
The layout plan and General Arrangement of the bridge is as per General Arrangement Drawing .
This note pertains to design of steel girder superstructure.
1 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE
1 Fabricate individual girder in pieces and transport to site.
2 Assemble the pieces upto splice of two adjecent girders and part of end diaphragms to form an assembly
which will be lifted. Cross diaphragms are also erected.
3 Stabilize this assembly in position with temporary strutting arrangement/cross bracings.

4 Liveload
The section presents Live load application for all the load cases defined in Section-1.2-c. Loads are applied
as per IRC guidelines and analysis is performed in STAAD. The analysis results i.e. moments and shear are presented
at end of this section.
Loading as per IRC:6 are as follows:-
Class 70R(W)
Class-A Vehicles

Impact factor:-
Provision of impact or dynamic action of has been taken into account by an increment of Live load by an
Impact factor. IRC:6-2014, specifies impact allowance of 15.4% for steel bridges more than 45m span.
Reduction factor:-
Clause 205 of IRC:6, provides reduction in longitudinal effect on bridges depending on the number of lanes
simultaneously occupied. As per the considered load cases of Live load applications, the reduction factors are applied.
Reduction factor for each of the load cases are specified in the section
