Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan Template

I. Standard CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1

Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about

kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

II. Level of critical thinking (you may use either theory here)

DOK: Bloom: Apply

III. ABCD lesson objective: Students will correctly answer the questions about doing

hard things in their small groups.

IV. Learning target: I will know why it’s important to do hard things.

V. Description of assessment: I will watch the students as they discuss in their small

groups, and I will listen to their answers.

VI. Materials needed and their location: Book, “Luke up to Bat” – On the desk

VII. Procedures: Please make this so specific that a substitute teacher could
successfully implement your plan.
A. Attention getter: What will you do to get attention and pique student
interest?
Show the students a sealed jar that has small candies in it. Try to open it. Make it
look really hard. Say, “Wow this is really hard. I think I’m going to give up.”
Students will say, “No don’t give up!” Say, “Why shouldn’t I give up? It’s too hard
for me to open.” Students will give their answers. Say, “Well maybe you’re right.
I’m really tired right now though so I’m going to set this off to the side and I will
try again later.” Say, “Today we are going to talk about how we can do hard
things, and after we learn about it then I will be able to open the jar.”

Read the book, “Luke Up to Bat”

Ask these questions. “What does it mean to be a squirt?” –Answer: to be small.
The other kids didn’t want him to play baseball because he was too small.
When he strikes out say, “Is baseball hard for Luke? He practiced so much, but he
still struck out. Do you think he is going to give up?”
After Jackie Robinson almost strikes out say, “Jackie Robinson is one of the best
baseball players is history, and even he almost struck out! Good thing he kept on
trying otherwise he never would have gotten his home run.”
“Do you think that Luke went on to become a great baseball star?” Answer- Yes!
He did because he didn’t give up. He kept trying even though it was really hard
for him.

B. Specific behaviors that you expect the students to exhibit: What do expect
students to do in relation to the other members of the group?

C. Task: Remember that each member of the learning group must be

responsible for at least one aspect of the entire group’s success. If one of
the group members doesn’t fulfill his/her responsibility, then the entire
group’s success in the learning task will suffer.

I will split the students into their math groups. (Math groups are posted on the
wall) I will then ask each group one question that they must discuss. I will give
them three minutes to discuss the question. Then I will call on one person
randomly from each group to come up and tell the class the answer to the
question. There will be a teacher at each group. I will give each teacher a card
with the question on it and they will read it to their group.

Questions:
Why is it important to do hard things?
What are some strategies you can use when something gets hard?
What happens if you quit when something gets hard?
What are some hard things you need to learn before you get to first grade?

After two minutes call on one person from a group to come stand by you and give
you the answer to the question. The have the person sit back down. Do this for
the three other groups.

D. Criteria for success: How will students know when they have successfully
accomplished their task?
They will know that they have accomplished their task when all students in their
group know the answer to the question.

VIII. Closure
IX. Have the students then discuss the following question in their group for two
minutes: What is something you’ve accomplished that was hard at first and
what did you do to accomplish it? Each person must answer that question.
The teachers in the group will make sure they answer. You will then call on
three students to share their experience. Say, “I can tell from all of the insights
that you shared that you are all capable of doing hard things. I know that as
you do the things that are hard for you, you will be able to accomplish
anything you want to do.”
