‫ِﻣْﻦ ﻋَﻼ َﻣ ِﺔ‬ 1 .

1 .‫ ِﻣْن ﻋَ ﻼ َﻣ ِﺔ اﻻْﻋﺗِﻣﺎ ِد ﻋَ ﻠﻰ اﻟﻌَ ِﻣَل ُﻧْﻘﺻﺎنُ اﻟَرّ ﺟﺎءِ ﻋِ ﻧْدَ وُ ﺟو ِد اﻟَزّ ﻟِل‬One of the signs of relying on one’s own deeds is the loss of hope when a downfall occurs.
‫ﻖ‬
ُ ِ‫ﺳﻮَاﺑ‬ 3 ‫ق أﺳﻮا َر َاﻷﻗْﺪا ِر‬ ُ ‫ﻖ اﻟ ِﮭﻤَﻢِ ﻻ َﺗﺨْ ِﺮ‬ ُ ِ‫ ﺳﻮَاﺑ‬Antecedent intentions (sawābiq al-himam) cannot pierce the walls of predestined Decrees.
ْ‫أَرِح‬ 4 ‫ َأرِ حْ ﻧَﻔﺳَ كَ ﻣِن ا َﻟ ّﺗْدﺑﯾرِ ﻓﻣَﺎ ﻗﺎ َم ِﺑ ِﮫ ﻏَ ﯾرُكَ ﻋَ ﻧْكَ ﻻ َﺗﻘُم ِﺑ ِﮫ ﻟِﻧَﻔﺳِ ك‬Rest yourself from self-direction. For what Someone Else has carried out on your behalf,
do not undertake yourself.

َ‫طﻠِبَ ِﻣﻧْك‬ُ ‫ﺿﻣِن َﻟَك َو َﺗﻘْﺻِ ﯾرُكَ ﻓﯾﻣﺎ‬ ُ ‫ إﺟﺗِﮭﺎدُكَ ﻓﯾﻣﺎ‬Your striving for what has already been guaranteed to you,
‫ك‬
َ ‫إﺟﺘِﮭﺎ ُد‬ 5 ‫ دَ ﻟﯾ ٌل ﻋَ ﻠﻰ اﻧْطِ ﻣﺎسِ اﻟﺑَﺻﯾرَ ِة ِﻣﻧْك‬and your remissness in what is demanded of you
are signs of the blurring of your intellect.

‫َاﻷﻋْﻤﺎ ُل‬ 10 ‫ﻼص ﻓِﯾﮭﺎ‬ ِ ْ‫ َو أرْ َواﺣُﮭﺎ وُ ﺟو ُد ﺳِ رﱢ ِاﻹﺧ‬، ‫ َاﻷﻋْ ﻣﺎ ُل ﺻو ٌر ﻗَﺎﺋ َﻣ ٌﺔ‬Actions are lifeless forms,
but the presence of an inner reality of sincerity (sirr al-ikhlāṣ) within them is what endows them with l
Bury your existence in the earth of obscurity, for whatever sprouts forth,

ْ‫اِدﻓِﻦ‬ 11 ِ ْ‫ اِدﻓِنْ وُ ﺟودَ كَ ﻓﻲ أَر‬without


.ُ‫ ﻓﻣَﺎ َﻧﺑَتَ ِﻣﻣّﺎ ﻟ ْم ﯾُدْ ﻓَنْ ﻻ َﯾ ِﺗ ﱡم ﻧِﺗﺎ ُﺟﮫ‬، ِ‫ض ا ْﻟ ُﺧﻣُوِ ل‬ having first been buried,
flowers imperfectly.

‫ﻣﺎ ﻧَﻔَ َﻊ‬ 12 ‫ ﻣﺎ َﻧﻔَﻊَ اﻟ َﻘﻠْبَ ﺷَﻰءٌ ِﻣ ْﺛ َل ﻋُزْ َﻟ ٍﺔ ﯾَدْ ُﺧ ُل ﺑِﮭﺎ َﻣﯾْدانَ ِﻓﻛْرَ ٍة‬Nothing benefits the heart more than a spiritual retreat
wherein it enters the domain of meditation (maydān fikra)

‫ﻚ‬
َ ُ‫ِإﺣﺎﻟَﺘ‬ 18 ِ‫ت اﻟﻧَﻔس‬
ِ ‫ ِإﺣﺎ َﻟﺗُكَ َاﻷﻋْ ﻣﺎ َل ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ وُ ﺟو ِد اﻟﻔَراغِ ﻣِن ُرﻋُوﻧﺎ‬Your postponement of deeds till the time when you are free is one of the frivolities of the ego.
‫ﺲ‬
ٍ َ‫ﻣﺎ ِﻣْﻦ ﻧَﻔ‬ 22 ‫ ﻣﺎ ِﻣْن َﻧﻔَسٍ ﺗُﺑدِﯾ ِﮫ ّإﻻ َو َﻟ ُﮫ ﻗَدَ ٌر ﻓﯾَك ﯾُﻣْ ﺿﯾﮫ‬Not a breath do you expire
but a Decree of Destiny makes it go forth.

‫ﺢ‬
ِ ْ‫ت اﻟﻨﱡﺠ‬
ِ ‫ِﻣْﻦ ﻋَﻼﻣﺎ‬ 26 ‫ت‬
ِ ‫ﷲ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺑِداﯾﺎ‬
ِ ‫ اﻟرُﺟو ُع إﻟﻰ‬،ِ‫ت اﻟﻧﱡﺟْ ِﺢ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻧﱢﮭﺎﯾﺎت‬
ِ ‫ ِﻣْن ﻋَ ﻼﻣﺎ‬From the signs of success at the end is a turning towards God in the beginning.
ْ‫ﻣَﻦ أ ْﺷ َﺮﻗَﺖ‬ 27 ‫ ﻣَن أﺷْرَ ﻗَتْ ﺑِدا َﯾ ُﺗ ُﮫ أﺷْرَ ﻗَتْ ﻧِﮭﺎ َﯾ ُﺗ ُﮫ‬He who is illumined at the beginning is illumined at the end.
‫ﻛﺎنَ ٰﷲ‬ 37 َ‫ ﻛﺎنَ ٰﷲُ و ﻻ ﺷَﻲءَ ﻣَﻌَ ُﮫ َوھ َُواﻵنَ ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ ﻣﺎ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ ﻛﺎن‬ God was and there was nothing with Him and He is now as He was.
ْ‫ﻻ ﺗَﺼْ ﺤَﺐ‬ 43 ِ ٰ ‫ ﻻ ﺗَﺻْ ﺣَ بْ ﻣَن ﻻ ُﯾْﻧﮭِﺿك ﺣﺎﻟُ ُﮫ َو ﻻ َﯾ ُدﻟّك ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ‬Do
‫ﷲ ﻣَﻘﺎﻟُﮫ‬ not keep company with anyone whose state does not inspire you and whose speech
does not lead you to God.

َ‫ ُرﺑﱠﻣﺎ ُﻛﻧْتَ ﻣُﺳﯾﺋﺎ ً ﻓَﺄراكَ اﻹﺣﺳﺎنَ ِﻣﻧْك‬You might be in a bad state and see you see virtue in yourself, by your association
with one who is in a worse state.
ً ‫ُرﺑﱠﻤﺎ ُﻛﻨْﺖَ ﻣُﺴﯿﺌﺎ‬ 44 ‫ﺻُﺣْ َﺑﺗُكَ ﻣَن ھ َُو أﺳوأ ﺣﺎﻻً ﻣﻧك‬
‫ﻣﺎ ﻗﱠَﻞ َﻋ َﻤ ٌﻞ‬ ٍ ِ ‫َ ْ ِ را‬ ِ َ ‫َ ُ َ َ َ ٌ َ َز‬ َ ‫ و‬،ٍ ِ ‫َ ْ ِ زا‬ ِ َ ‫َ َ ٌ َ َز‬ ّ No deed arising from a renouncing heart is small,
and no deed arising from an avaricious heart is fruitful.

A sign of the heart’s death
‫ت‬
ِ ‫ب ﻋَ دَ ُم اﻟﺣُز ِن ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ ﻣﺎ ﻓﺎﺗَكَ ﻣِنَ اﻟﻣُواﻓَﻘﺎ‬ ِ ‫ت اﻟﻘَﻠ‬ ِ ‫ ِﻣْن ﻋَ ﻼﻣﺎِت ﻣَو‬is the absence of sadness
 ِ‫ِﻣْﻦ ﻋَﻼﻣﺎِت ﻣَﻮت‬ 48 ‫ك ا َﻟﻧّدَ مِ ﻋَ ﻠَﻰ ﻣﺎ ﻓَﻌَ ْﻠ َﺗ ُﮫ ﻣِن وُ ﺟو ِد اﻟَزّ ّﻻت‬ ُ ْ‫ و ﺗَر‬over the acts of obedience you have neglected and the abandonment of regret
over the mistakes you have made.

ُ‫ﺷﮭُو ُده‬
ُ َ‫ب ِﻣْن ﻋَ ﻣَلٍ َﯾﻐِﯾبُ ﻋَ َﻧْك‬ ِ ِ‫ ﻻ ﻋَ َﻣ َل أرْ ﺟَ ﻰ ﻟِ ْﻠﻘُﻠو‬No deed is more fruitful for the heart than the one you are not aware of
‫ﻻ َﻋ َﻤ َﻞ‬ 51 ُ‫ و ﯾُﺣْ َﺗ َﻘ ُر ﻋِ ﻧْدَ كَ وُ ﺟُو ُده‬and which is deemed paltry by you.
‫إَﻧّﻤﺎ َ أوْ َر َد‬ 52 ‫ إَﻧّﻣﺎ َ ْأورَ دَ ﻋَ َﻠﯾْك اﻟوارِ دَ ﻟِﺗَﻛونَ ِﺑ ِﮫ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ وارِ دا‬He only made an inspiration come upon you so that you would go to Him.
‫اﻷﻧْﻮا ُر‬ 55 ‫ اﻷﻧْوا ُر ﻣَطﺎﯾﺎ اﻟﻘُﻠوِ ب َو َاﻷﺳْ رار‬Lights are the riding-mounts of hearts and of their secrets.
‫ﺧﯿ ُﺮ‬ َ ِْ ُُِ َُ ُ ِْ ُ ُُ َْ ُ
75 The best that you can seek from Him is that which He seeks from you.

‫ك‬
َ ‫َُرﺑّﻤﺎ َأﻋْﻄﺎ‬ 83 ‫ َُرﺑّﻣﺎ َأﻋْ طﺎكَ َﻓ َﻣﻧَﻌَ كَ َو َُرﺑّﻣﺎ َﻣﻧَﻌَ ك ﻓَﺄﻋْ طﺎك‬Sometimes He gives while depriving you, and sometimes He deprives you in giving.
The most ignorant of all people
‫أْﺟْ ﮭَ َﻞ‬ 144 ِ‫ أﺟْ َﮭ َل اﻟﻧّﺎسِ ﻣَنْ ﺗَرَ كَ ﯾَﻘﯾنَ ﻣﺎ ﻋِ ﻧْدَ هُ ﻟِ ﱢظَنﱢ ﻣﺎ ﻋِ ﻧْدَ اﻟﻧّﺎس‬is the one who abandons the certitude he has for an opinion people have.
When ascetics are praised, they are contracted,
‫ اﻟُزّ ھّﺎ ُد إذا ُﻣدِﺣوا اﻧ َﻘﺑَﺿوا ﻟِﺷُﮭو ِد ِھ ُم ا َﻟﺛّﻧﺎءَ ﻣِن اﻟﺧَ ﻠْق‬for they witness the praise as coming from mankind;
‫اﻟُ ّﺰھّﺎ ُد‬ 146 ‫ َو اﻟﻌﺎرِ ﻓونَ إذا ُﻣدِﺣوا ا ْﻧﺑَﺳَ طوا ﻟِﺷُﮭو ِد ْ ِھم ذﻟِك ِﻣَن اﻟﻣﻠَِك اﻟﺣَ ق‬but when gnostics are praised, they are expanded,
for they witness the praise as coming from the True King

ٍ‫ﱡﻛُﻞ ﻛَﻼم‬ 183 ‫ب اﻟﱠذي ِﻣ ْﻧ ُﮫ ﺑَرَ ز‬ َ ‫ ﱡﻛُل ﻛَﻼ ٍم َﯾ ْﺑ ُر ُز َو ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ‬Every


ِ ِ‫ﻛْﺳوةُ اﻟ َﻘ ْﻠ‬ statement spoken has a covering
describing the heart of the one uttering.

‫ﻣﺎ ﻓﺎﺗَﻚ‬ 209 َ ‫ ﻣﺎ ﻓﺎﺗَك ﻣِنْ ُﻋﻣُرِ كَ ﻻﻋِ َوضَ َﻟ ُﮫ‬What


‫وﻣﺎ ﺣَ ﺻَ ل ﻟَك ِﻣ ْﻧ ُﮫ ﻻ ﻗﯾ َﻣ َﺔ َﻟ ُﮫ‬، has passed of your life cannot be replaced
and what you have attained [of God's pleasure] cannot be priced.

‫ﻟِﯿَﻘِ ﱠﻞ‬ 226 ‫ َﯾ ِﻘ ﱠل ﻣﺎ ﺗَﺣْ زَ نُ ﻋَ َﻠ ْﯾ ِﮫ‬،ِ‫ ﻟِ َﯾ ِﻘ ﱠل ﻣﺎ َﺗﻔْرَ ُح ِﺑﮫ‬Let the things that make you happy be fewer and the things that make you sad will be fewer.
‫أﻧَْﺖ‬ 248 َ‫ت اﻷْﻛوانُ ﻣَﻌَ ك‬ ِ ‫ ﻓَﺈذا َﺷﮭِدْ َﺗ ُﮫ ﻛﺎ َﻧ‬، َ‫ أ َﻧْت ﻣَﻊَ اﻷْﻛوا ِن ﻣﺎ َﻟ ْم َﺗ ْﺷ َﮭ ِد اﻟ ُﻣﻛَوﱢ ن‬You are with created things as long as you do not witness the Creator.
When you witness Him, created things are with you.
The treachery of all treacheries is that you become free from things that busy you
،ِ‫ اﻟ ِْﺧذﻻنُ ﱡﻛُل اﻟ ِْﺧذﻻِنَ أْن َﭠ َﺗ َﻔَرّ غَ ِْﻣن اﻟﱠﺷواﻏِ ل َُﺛ ّم ﻻ َﭠﺗ ََوﺟّ َﮫ إ َﻟ ْﯾﮫ‬but still do not turn towards Him,
ُ‫اﻟﺨﺬﻻن‬
ِْ 261 ‫ َو َﺗ ﱢﻘَل ﻋَ وا ِﺋﻘُك َُﺛ ّم ﻻ ﺗَرْ ﺣَ ل إ َﻟ ْﯾ ِﮫ‬and that your barriers
become fewer but still do not travel to Him.

‫اﻟﻔِ ْﻜ َﺮةُ ﺳِ ﯿ ُﺮ‬ ِ‫ر‬ ‫َد ا‬ ِ ‫ا ِ ْ َة ُ ِ ُ ا‬ Contemplation is the heart's journey through the fields of all that is other than God.

Contemplation is of two types:

‫ ِﻓ ْﻛرَ ةُ ﺗَﺻْ دﯾقٍ َوإﯾﻣﺎ ٍن َو ِﻓﻛْرَ ةُ ﺷُﮭو ٍد َوﻋِ ﯾﺎ ٍن‬:‫( اﻟﻔِﻛْ رَ ةُ ﻓِﻛْ رَ ﺗﺎِن‬1) contemplation of belief and faith and
(2) contemplation of witnessing and seeing.

‫اﻟﻔِ ْﻜ َﺮةُ ﻓِ ْﻜﺮَﺗﺎِن‬ 264 ‫ َواﻟﺛّﺎﻧ َ ِﯾ ُﺔ َِﻷْرﺑﺎِب اﻟﺷّﮭو ِد َواﻻْﺳ ِﺗﺑْﺻﺎر‬، ِ‫ ﻓَﺎﻷ ُوﻟﻰ ﻷْرﺑﺎِب اﻻْﻋﺗِﺑﺎر‬The first is for those who are apt to learn lessons [from what they see]
and the second is for those that experience the vision [of God] and have insight.
