Professionalism

I came into this class with what I thought to be a pretty good understanding of what a

family and community relationship entails. Although I had an accurate perception of

what values are imperative in the foundation of an effective relationship, I had not fully

grasped what is truly necessary and vital in order to assist a family in their particular area

of need.

I had mentioned in my previous reflection that I hoped to learn more and gain a deeper

understanding of the importance of working with families who have children with special

needs. I would say that this exceeded my expectations; I learned above and beyond about

the difference that educators can make in a family’s life. Through the family project,

through case studies, and through other’s presentations I have come to the conclusion that

I truly can make a difference as a future educator.

I also mentioned that I wanted to learn more about what I could do personally to

become a better educator. In this class qualities have been demonstrated throughout the

semester of what a successful educator involves. I had the opportunity to point out some

of the positive qualities I have while working with young children, and others that I need

to work on.

I have learned several different strategies in this class that can be used as I embark on

the journey of special education and my future while working with families who have

children with special needs. Like I mentioned in my previous reflection it is still apparent

to me that trust is a foundation that is needed in any relationship. I want the families that I

work with to recognize that I am dedicated to assisting their child to be the best that they
can be, and that I am both a loyal and compassionate professional. I am aware that a solid

relationship is also formed when the family feels that they are treated fairly, not judged,

and that there is a mutual level of respect for each other.

This class has illustrated further that this career is not for everyone, it can be

challenging at times, it requires an excessive amount of patience and sometimes

compromise. More importantly then this however what I have learned from this class, is

that it is entirely worth it.
