Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Brain Pop has audio/visual, closed captions, transcripts and language
options built into the software. Videos may be replayed, rewound, fast forwarded and paused at the viewers’
convenience. A word wall will be developed in the lesson to support struggling readers and ELL students.

Lesson idea implementation: The class will have a one-week long focus unit on Dr. Martin Luther King. Over
the course of the week an artifact will be created each day to compile a presentation folder. In this lesson, the
teacher will introduce students to the BrainPop concept map video on the smartboard. As a whole class, the

students will watch a brief video explanation on concept maps. The students will take a whole class formative
assessment on BrainPop to demonstrate understanding of concept maps and how to create and apply them.
The teacher will shift to the BrainPop feature on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The class will watch the video on
Dr. King and participate in a simple quiz to check comprehension. Students will break into previously assigned
pairs and get one Chromebook per pair. The teacher will demonstrate on the smartboard the basics of
creating a concept map in brainpop. The whole class will brainstorm a word wall on Dr. King that will remain
displayed on the smartboard as a reference. Pairs of students will work cooperatively to create one concept
map per pair. When finished, concept maps will be printed and added to their folders. Students will present
their folders to the rest of the class at the end of the week.
Reflective Practice: I think that students working in small groups to organize something as high level as a
concept map will go far to distill the information in student’s minds. This would be a wonderful activity to
work on Wednesday or Thursday before presenting portfolios on Friday. This way, students can activate
knowledge from earlier in the week to integrate into their concept maps in addition to the video they watch on
BrainPop. The concept maps might be a wonderful support for a shared writing prompt the following day. I
would use other technology tools in the remainder of the week, such as a virtual tour to the King memorial
and the King Center.
