Students copy the definition of spatial dimension into their workbooks. Maps- Blank world map
Explain to students that spatial dimension are used to measure indicators, in Activity, HPI Map.
order to give us a better insight into a country's wellbeing.
Introduce: The Happy Planet Index is one way wellbeing can be measured.
Ask students to think about this question:
Which country is the happiest?
Introduce HPI
1. Life expectancy
2. Experienced wellbeing
3. Inequality of outcomes
4. Ecological footprint
Students copy PP on- Understanding the Happy Planet Index & colours to
represent the indicators.
1. Name three places you would expect to rank highly on the Happy Planet
Index.
2. Name three places you would expect to rank low.
Mapping: Students look at the Happy Planet Index Map- (Figure 1 page 404 of
textbook) - Map shown on smart board for students to see/ printed copy.
Students are given a blank world map. Using this blank map, students are to copy the
colours as shown on Figure 1. And transfer the same colours, using coloured pencils
onto their own blank map.
Teacher places HPI index world map on smart board with Key of map clearly shown.
Class discussion around the key so that students understand how human wellbeing is
measured using the HPI.
1. Explain in 1 paragraph why you chose the country/ continent you did for
happiest/ least happiest.
2. Based on the colours and KEY shown on Figure 1.- The Happy Planet Index
Map, were your predications for the happiest/ least happiest countries correct?
3. Can you think of any reasons that could explain why the spatial distribution of
happiness within countries/ continents and across the globe have been
presented this way on Figure 1?
