Quezon City - Litratektura 2018 highlights urban vernacular architecture in this year’s theme
“Tagpi-tagping Pamumuhay: Istruktura ng Masang Filipino,” capturing Filipino ingenuity
amidst inequalities prevalent in today’s society.
A total of 65 entries were submitted for the three different categories in this year’s
competition namely: Conventional, Mobile, and Film Category.
The awarding of winners for Litratektura 2018 was held last May 5, 2018 at the Museum of
Filipino Architecture, College of Architecture in UP Diliman.
The First Place for the Conventional Category, Life Under the Bridge by Rhedel Sy, depicts
the life of people living under a bridge and shows their creativity in making their own house
despite life’s hardships. *insert photo*
“Isa sa mga gusto ko talagang kuhanan yung mga kababayan nating nakatira sa ilalim ng
tulay. Bale kuha siya sa malapit sa Navotas fish port, tapos yun nga naswertehan ko lang
sila na nakita ko sa ilalim… accomodating nga yung mga tao dun, hindi siya nakakatakot.
(One of the things I really wanted to capture was our kababayans who live under the bridge.
The photo was taken near Navotas fish port, and I just happened to chance upon them
under [the bridge]… the people there were very accomodating, and it wasn’t scary at all)”
says Mr. Sy, when asked about the story behind his winning entry.
Mr. Sy is a member of Team Juan Makasining Camera Club, along with fellow club members
who have been consistently securing the top spots in the competition, including last year’s
Litratektura First Place for the conventional category.

Litratektura 2018 director, Ayaka Chikusa, hopes that this year’s competition opened eyes
on the realities that Filipinos face — recognizing Filipino people’s creativity in facing life’s
challenges.
“May we all continue to use photography as a means to shed light on the issues that the
Filipino masses are facing — whether or not they are beautiful, and may we continue to fight
with the masses in their struggles through and beyond photography,” she concludes.
