Litratektura 2018 Highlights Urban Vernacular Architecture

Quezon City - Litratektura 2018 highlights urban vernacular architecture in this year’s theme
“Tagpi-tagping Pamumuhay: Istruktura ng Masang Filipino,” capturing Filipino ingenuity
amidst inequalities prevalent in today’s society.

Litratektura is an annual photography competition organized by the United Architects of the

Philippines (UAPSA-UPD), featuring the beauty of Filipino Architecture as it promotes
awareness and appreciation on undervalued structures all over the country.

A total of 65 entries were submitted for the three different categories in this year’s
competition namely: Conventional, Mobile, and Film Category.

The awarding of winners for Litratektura 2018 was held last May 5, 2018 at the Museum of
Filipino Architecture, College of Architecture in UP Diliman.

The First Place for the Conventional Category, Life Under the Bridge by Rhedel Sy, depicts
the life of people living under a bridge and shows their creativity in making their own house
despite life’s hardships. *insert photo*

“Isa sa mga gusto ko talagang kuhanan yung mga kababayan nating nakatira sa ilalim ng
tulay. Bale kuha siya sa malapit sa Navotas fish port, tapos yun nga naswertehan ko lang
sila na nakita ko sa ilalim… accomodating nga yung mga tao dun, hindi siya nakakatakot.
(One of the things I really wanted to capture was our kababayans who live under the bridge.
The photo was taken near Navotas fish port, and I just happened to chance upon them
under [the bridge]… the people there were very accomodating, and it wasn’t scary at all)”
says Mr. Sy, when asked about the story behind his winning entry.

Mr. Sy is a member of Team Juan Makasining Camera Club, along with fellow club members
who have been consistently securing the top spots in the competition, including last year’s
Litratektura First Place for the conventional category.

Litratektura 2018 director, Ayaka Chikusa, hopes that this year’s competition opened eyes
on the realities that Filipinos face — recognizing Filipino people’s creativity in facing life’s
challenges.

“May we all continue to use photography as a means to shed light on the issues that the
Filipino masses are facing — whether or not they are beautiful, and may we continue to fight
with the masses in their struggles through and beyond photography,” she concludes.

Life Under the Bridge

This photo depicts how ingenuity people living under this bridge create their own house.
There are at least six families who lives here. They can still smile despite the hardships in
their lives.

Aya Chikusa’s closing remarks

Good morning, participants, UAPSA members, and partners. It has always been
Litratektura's goal to promote awareness and appreciation on undervalued structures all over
the country. This year, the Litratektura team aimed to shed light on the realities that majority
of Filipinos face today--the inequalities that are are prevalent in our society. This is why we
chose the theme Tagpi-tagping Pamumuhay: Istruktura ng Masang Filipino as our theme.
We are very proud of all the entries that you submitted as they all focused on probably the
most unappreciated and undervalued structures in the Philippines--structures that were not
made by famous architects, or those structures that do not look particularly aesthetically
pleasing to most people. Instead, you focused on structures that were made by ordinary
Filipino people, structures that are "tagpi-tagpi", because they have no other choice but to
make it so in order to survive the inequalities that are present today. We hope that this year's
competition opened your eyes on the realities that the Filipino masses face. We also hope
that you recognized the Filipino people's creativity and uplifting spirit despite these realities.
May you all continue to use photography as a means to shed light on the issues that the
Filipino masses are facing--whether or not they are beautiful. And we hope that you continue
to fight with the masses in their struggles through and beyond photography. Thank you and
congratulations.

Rhedel C. Sy, conventional category 1st place

Ano yung naging inspiration for the photo?

“Nag-focus talaga ako dun sa theme. Bago ako pumunta dun, nagresearch na talaga ako
kung ano yung gusto kong kuhanan. Parang isa sa mga gusto ko talagang kuhanan yung
mga kababayan natin na nakatira sa ilalim talaga ng tulay.

What’s the story behind the picture?

“Bale kuha siya sa malapit sa Navotas fish port. Actually ang hinanap ko talaga yung mga
bahay na nakatayo? sa ilog. Tapos yun nga nasweertehan ko lang sila na nakita ko sa ilalim.
Parang okay lang sila, accomodating nga yung mga tao dun, hindi siya nakakatakot.
Actually, landscape photographer ako, pero kasaa ko saa caamera club yung nanalo last
year
