Dramatis Personae:
John Calico, lt. governor of Kansas
(Dodge to Memphis)
Description: broad shouldered man with a wide
grin bracketed by a walrusy mustache. His voice
carries and fills whatever train car he is in. He
laughs often.
* Streetwise (7): known to be a compulsive
gambler.
* Profession: Law (5): known for aggressive laws
making violent crime carry much harsher
sentences.
* Profession: Soldier (5): former Union soldier,
pre-Gettysburg.
* Area Knowledge [disputed] (3): looking to
become governor next election and has begun
cultivating favors and raising funds.
Plot: Mina wants to use Kansas resources to
make sure her trains aren’t hit by Union Raiders.
She is riding him out to Memphis and has given
him gambling credit on the train.
Secret: Calico has a mistress and is meeting her
on the train.
Raymond DuPont, English Occultist
(Denver to Memphis)
Description: This scrawny, pale man has dark
hair and dark clothes. He has a somewhat weak
chin. He rarely says much and always seems to
be reading a book in some or another foreign
language.
* Occult (7): He is reading an occult book, Welsh
in origin, filled with bizarre rites for bloodletting.
* Streetwise (11): the DuPont family is known to
be a prominent land-owning family out west and
have connections all over.
Plot: Mina and His family have made
arrangements to cross train their sorcerers.
Secret: Raymond, like most of his family, is a
werewolf as well as being a blood mage. The
stewardess is one of Mina’s belles and is trying
to honeypot the awkward man.
Mary Moon, Famous Socialite
(Denver to Little Rock)
Description: A stunningly beautiful woman with
long blond hair who dresses nicer than anyone
else on the train. Her eyes are often tired, and
her soft, melodious voice hides the slightest
edge of contempt towards most of the other
passengers.
* Streetwise (13): The woman enjoys her opium
(laudanum specifically)
* Streetwise (9): She is known for going through
lovers, and seems to become bored with people
quickly.
Plot: She is returning home to Arkansas. She
dislikes Liz for being as pretty, and tries to
interject to seduce any she turns her attentions
to. Mina has interest in her considerable wealth.
Secret: She has night terrors after seeing
something unnatural.
Porter Lavarre, Bare-knuckle boxing legend
(Denver to Memphis)
Description: This sinewy black man has a
crooked nose and an easy smile. It is clear he
has had some hard living before now, as he has
bags under his eyes that are slowly fading. He
has tattoos along his arms and a cross on his
chest.
*Fighting [knowledge] (5): He is probably one of
the best boxers alive, and his style is studied,
particularly in Paris.
* Streetwise (9): Word is he has been acting as
an enforcer for some of the cattle barons out
west, up until a month or two ago when he
dropped off the radar.
Plot: Mina wants him, not just as someone who
can harass and extort the other rail lines, but
also to teach her witches more advanced
fighting moves.
Secret: He beat a man to death out west when a
conflict got out of hand. He had to leave town
quickly.

Dr Alfred Higginbottom, New Scientist
(Denver to Little Rock)
Description: a man with wild graying hair and a
Roman nose, he constantly smells sour, like
vinegar or lemons. He is often writing furiously
into a leather bound journal, and he occasionally
laughs or mutters to himself while pushing up his
spectacles on his nose.
* Science [any] (7): He is reading up on
aerodynamics mostly but occasionally he
changes focus towards ballistics.
* Area Knowledge [southeast] (5): Due to a
malfunction while presenting in a public setting,
he was mocked while visiting the city of
Savannah.
*Streetwise (13): He has discretely been trying
to figure the cost of mercenary units in the west.
Plot: Mina’s agent will try to convince him to
make some improvements on the train at the
next stop off, implying assistance with his
‘vendetta’.
Secret: None. I mean, he’s mad, but that’s no
surprise.
Amber Coleman, Investigative Journalist
(Denver to Dodge City)
Description: a short woman with a cherubic face
and big green eyes, she carries herself with an
anxious energy most of the time. She dresses in
functional travel clothes and a derby. She
carries her pack with her everywhere she goes.
* Profession: Journalism (5): She is from back
east and came out to document life in the
frontier. She ended up going somewhat native
and now purely reports via correspondence with
New York.
* Streetwise (9): She has expressed an interest
in certain circles for an introduction with Wyatt
Earp.
Plot: She is an obstacle for the rail line.
Fortunately she is secretly into women, and this
one of the two belles on the train will try to
distract her.
Secret: She witnessed something she was not
supposed to see out west, and a powerful figure
has sent a skin walker after her.
Odis Smith, Tennessee Congressman
(Little Rock to Memphis)
Description: A rotund man with a full red beard,
he dresses in a well worn suit with a bolero tie.
He often has a cup of coffee in his hand.
* Profession [Politics] (5): Known to be an ally of
* the railroad industry, specifically Black River,
he has proposed several tax cuts on the rail line
in the past.
* Area Knowledge [Back East] (3): He came
from a shipping magnate family bought out by
Black River. There are rumors his position is
backed by Mina.
Plot: The terms of new tax breaks need to be
discussed in person with Mina, and he rides for
free.
Secret: He is, in fact, feeding information about
Mina’s requests to the Confederacy in private.
Richard Jay, Former Smith and Robards
Exec
(Denver to Little Rock)
Description: a clean shaven man with pale grey
eyes, he carries himself with a suspicious
bearing. His clothes are functional but somewhat
tinhorn. He often has a thin-rolled cigarette lit.
* Science [any] (5): He was asked to leave S&R
after several of his salesmen went missing. He
has not taken it well.
* Streetwise (11): He has been secretly trying to
unload some blueprints.
Plot: Mina’s people want him under their thumb.
They know he has Knowledge of S&R at the top
levels and will do a lot to get that information.
Secret: He stole blueprints on his way out and
they will likely send troubleshooters to deal with
him.
Molly Mayhew, Gambler
(Regular on the line)
Description: Pale woman with black hair and
dark brown eyes, dressed in functional but
provocative clothes. Her grin borders on impish
at times, and she is fond of her drinks.
* Gambling [knowledge] (3): She is a quite
capable at the table, and though she wouldn’t
look it she is one of the most successful
gamblers of the west.
* Streetwise (9): She allegedly is wanted back
east for smuggling contraband.
Plot: She plays the Black River route so the train
line can have more prestige.
Secret: She is sending most of her winnings
back home to support her mother.
Horus Cobden, Cattle Baron
(Denver to Memphis)
Description: This stocky man has a stern
expression. His bald pate shines slightly in the
direct sunlight. His suit is bespoke and the chain
for his pocket watch glistens with gold and
precious stones.
* Area Knowledge [Disputed] (5): Horus has
some serious cowboys watching his interests,
recruited from war veterans mostly.
* Streetwise (9): He has made after the fact
dealings with landowners. Nothing obviously
illegal but definitely shady.
Plot: He represents a fair amount of the land
along the Chisholm Trail and Texas ranch land.
Mina needs to get as much land right of ways as
she can.
Secret: He has kidnapped women brought to his
ranch to satisfy his cowboys before they are
vanished.
Count De Ville, European Aristocrat
(Denver to Memphis)
A sallow man of Slavic descent, dressed in a
very traditional suit with cane. He has an
impressive mustache and seems to regard most
aboard the train with an even, stony expression,
and only his thick arched eyebrows betray any
emotions.
* Academia [History, Culture, etc] (9): His
clothes imply a Serbian or Romanian
background, and likely aristocracy.
* Streetwise (11): The Count is something of a
gambler, enjoying the sport of western poker.
Plot: This is someone Mina absolutely wants to
meet. He is given Carte Blanche aboard the
train. He seems unaffected by this treatment,
and instead only seems interested in reaching
the Mississippi River in Memphis.
Secret: Count De Ville is a pseudonym for
Dracula.
Ben Pope, Infamous Gunslinger
(Oklahoma edge to Little Rock)
Description: a man with a gaunt face and in what
looks to be trail-worn priestly formal robes and a
wide brimmed black hat hums to himself. He sits
looking out the window, lost in thought.
* Streetwise (5): Ben Pope is a wanted man in
the confederacy. He is sought for killing a law
man, murder, jail break, extortion, horse
thieving, and train robbery.
* Firearms [knowledge] (9): He has a military
pistol sling at his side with sights filed down for
QuickDraw. He has it slung low and southpaw.
* Profession [theology] (5): His robes are
appropriate for a Catholic cardinal for funerary
garb.
Plot: Mina’s agents could use a new catspaw in
some of their dealings, so they will approach him
about funding his formation of a gang to harass
Dixie Rails.
Secret: Not too much. He is a cold hearted
bastard and if he dies he is just lucky enough to
harrow.
John Grey, Disparaged Former Lawman
(Dodge City to Little Rock)
Description: This slightly paunchy man sits
slumped in his seat, and and though he nods
politely to most people, the five o clock shadow,
sunken eyes, and stink of alcohol make him few
friends. He keeps regarding a picture.
* Profession [law] (5): Grey gained some
prominence a decade back as being a major
stabilizing force in the west. He was known best
for breaking the back of the McDermont Gang.
* Medicine (7): The man has the appearance of
someone suffering from the consumption, in
both his paleness and his cough.
Plot: Mina’s ladies want to sell him on the idea of
one last hurrah for glory. He is gonna be placed
in Little Rock until he can be turned, and then
set loose in Kansas to deal with Union Raiders.
Secret: John Grey has a death wish and is
gonna chase down every lawbreaker he sees,
even if they work for Black River.
Robert Chilton, Confederate Colonel
(Little Rock to Memphis)
Description: A gray haired man sits with his back
straight. His bushy beard encircling his face. His
hair is combed back into a mane, and his beady
eyes seem to absorb his surroundings.
* Knowledge [Tactics] (3): Chilton has been
taught throughout the confederacy in terms of
tactics.
* Academia [Occult] (7): Chilton was one of the
soldiers at Gettysburg. His men said he came
out of it a bit colder.
Plot: Mina knows the Colonel has been selling
cannons on the side and wants in. The Colonel
is waiting to see how it plays out but he is
prepared to do business.
Secret: Chilton has developed a deep edge of
nihilism and his cleverness and caution have
made him self serving. He also knows Mina’s
witches are literal and is looking to extend his
life.
Edwin Cunningham, Maze Privateer
(Denver to Memphis)
Description: a man with a clean, neat goatee
and a uniform, he spends most of his time
writing in a book of some sort. He takes tea with
his meals, and he has a discerning outlook.
* Profession [Soldier] (5): He is a British Naval
soldier. His rank is not clear though which is
unusual.
* Streetwise (9): People refer to the man as ‘the
Jackal’, which is the name of a brutal captain in
the Maze:
Plot: Mina has already extended him hospitality.
She realizes that she may require ghost rock
before reaching California, and she can weaken
Union forces there at the same time.
Secret: Edwin Cunningham will likely receive
orders to return home, but a personal vendetta
means he will want to stay. As such, he will
require financial backing. He plans on getting
just that.
Sister Faye Garland, Matriarch of a Woman’s
Shelter
(Fort Smith to Memphis)
Description: Her face carries the slightest of
wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and mouth,
and her nose is strong and aquiline. Despite
this, her eyes are warm and compassionate, and
she dresses in a simple conservative burgundy
dress.
*Academia [Social Science] (3): It’s not
uncommon to see a matriarch visiting nearby
towns to gather up the lost and wayward
children of the frontier. It’s unusual to see such a
woman travelling on the rails looking for more
out of state.
* Streetwise (7): Orphans in Memphis have an
excellent rate of adoption, despite the difficulties
of war, and have begun to help surrounding
regions.
Plot: Mina has been ‘adopting’ many of the
young girls and training them in her very own
‘red room’
Secret: The schoolmarm has had enough and
plans to break off the arrangement her fore-
bearers made.
