Proficiencies:(Mathematics only)
Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 State reasons for the importance of sleep
 Apply their knowledge to create a news report

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

 PowerPoint  Ellie can type her information/script on her
 Whiteboard markers iPad rather than write her notes out
 iPads
 Video  Encourage students to participate in class
discussion by prompting them based on
feelings rather than ‘knowledge’ they can
share

 Work with students who are weaker readers to

help them write out their ideas to read in the
news report.
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
 By the end of the lesson each student/group had produced an iMovie news report ready to be uploaded to
SeeSaw. They also were very switched on to the different ideas we spoke about on sleep and retained a lot
of the information that I gave to them in order to create informative reports.
 I can see that the two objectives have been met as all students throughout the lesson gave me insights into
either how they feel when they do not get enough sleep, how to create a healthy bedtime routine and also

1
what to avoid in to get a good night’s sleep. I also gauged whether or not the objective was met by the
students’ videos, which in the end all students completed.
 As with other topics in health, I will strategically ask questions informally throughout the next week to different
students (where appropriate) to see how much they learnt in the lesson – I did this with the healthy food topic
while out on duty and it engaged them more in the topic).
 The instruction in the lesson could have been clearer – which ties in intrinsically with the time management.
In future lessons I would give the students their instructions, then set an allotted time for planning and then a
separate slot of time for the filming. This way students will all have time to plan and make the video, leaving
time at the end to review.
 Following my lesson my supervisor said that she is going to use the news report idea in her on class which
was some positive feedback on the main activity idea.

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

 The students enjoyed watching my own news report video from when I was there age and I think this was a
good aspect of the lesson as it gave them some motivation for their own videos.
 I had to be a bit firmer on student behaviour throughout this lesson, particularly because there were students
inside and outside the room filming their videos and groups were at different stages so there were times when
students were off task and I had to repeat myself.
 Sometimes when I’m teaching I forget small yet important instructions to give students and have to stop them
once I have sent them off. This could be improved upon by stating all my instructions and then just reaffirming
them throughout the activity.
 The introduction had a little bit too much information for the year level (year 2), so next time I could focus their
attention on two or three aspects that I want them to base their video/news report around.

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
 WALT: Understand the importance of sleep
12pm
 Explain to students that today we will be starting a new topic in health
– the importance of sleep! We are focusing on this topic because
wellbeing refers to many things, not just eating healthily. It relates to
how we function emotionally and physically which is encompassed by
our quality of sleep.

 Begin a brainstorm on the board to see what the students know about
sleep. Prompt them with questions such as:
“Why do we need sleep?”
“How many hours of sleep do you think we need?” Whiteboard marker
“How do you feel when you do not get enough sleep?”
12:05pm
 Write all of their ideas on the board and tell them that we will come
back to our brainstorm later on in the lesson to see what else we can
add.

 As a motivation to begin the topic, students will view this short-

animated video about why it is so important for kids to get a sufficient Video loaded
amount of sleep at night time.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

2
 Reiterate the information from the video by going through the slides PowerPoint
and sparking conversation with the students about the benefits of a
good sleep, what happens when we sleep and ways that we can get
into a good sleeping pattern.

 Tell students that today we are stepping into the shoes of news
12:10pm
reporters! I will put students into groups of three and they will plan
and deliver a news report on the importance of sleep. They will then
put their videos into iMovie and upload it to See Saw.

 Before sending students off, show them the news report I made at My news report
school in year 4. Tell them that it was on a different topic but that they example
can use the same kind of format to create their videos.

 Pick groups at random and send them off, making sure to direct
students’ attention to the WILF written clearly on the board.
12:15pm
 Throughout the lesson go around to each group to ensure that they
are on task and are planning what they will say before beginning to
record.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

 At 12:45pm tell students to begin to save their videos and upload
them to SeeSaw under each person in the group’s name.

 Call students back to the mat and ask students if they would like to
12:45pm
add anything to our brainstorm we made at the beginning of the
lesson. They might think of facts that they heard in the video or in the
following discussion.

 To end the lesson, show one or two groups news reports to the class.
12:55pm
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)
 Students will need to ensure that their desks are tidy and they are
sitting on the front mat ready to say a prayer before lunchtime
