Treatment/Proposal

What are you producing? Why did you choose this?

We are going to produce a sports magazine which will cover general football news from all
around the UK. We have decided to do a sports magazine because we are all interested in
football and we are interested finding and discussing news stories that evolve around football.
We are going to cover general news because we want to cover the biggest headlines etc.

Why did you choose this genre? Why?

We choose this genre because we have a love for football and we enjoy having football
discussions. Football is very popular in the UK. Lots of people actually go out their way to buy a
sports magazine. We want to become like these big magazines with analysing the big stories
and making a joy for people to read. I think that it is easy to make this genre interesting so we
decided to make this type of magazine.

Target Audience

For our sports magazine (Final Whistle), the primary audience will be generally male-dominated.
This is because the football magazine consumers are 90 percent male. This choice will boost
and gain more readers and therefore earn more money. Football is also the primary and national
sport of England, meaning that more people will want to read our football magazine rather than
a rugby or tennis magazine. The age of people who will read our magazine will be 18-25 as the
content inside is quite sophisticated and the jargon used may not be lexis which can be
understood by younger consumers who may read football magazines such as “Match of the
Day” magazine or “Match” magazine. The primary geodemographics for Final Whistle are
people who live in the north of England because the people in the north tend to be more of a
football fan due to the success of the clubs in places such as Manchester and Liverpool. This is
also because football became a part of the culture (alongside music) in the north in the 80’s and
90’s in Thatcher’s government due to her lack of hospitality for the north. This is also why Final
Whistle magazine will generally be bought and read by people who generally vote for the Labour
party rather than the Conservative party as football is a sport favoured by the working class who
tend to vote for Labour. The occupation of the people who are Final Whistle’s primary audience
will tend to be people who work in the sports industry or are students. This is due to the fact
that young people are generally likely to enjoy football and people in the sports industry will
obviously enjoy the magazine.
The secondary audience for our magazine will be people who are older from the ages of 25-45
these are the secondary audience because this group of people may lean towards a different
magazine, even if it is still football as Final Whistle is a magazine which talks mostly about
football nowadays and the latest happenings which an older generation may not appreciate as
they may want to read about players who might no longer play and read about older football
Matt
Corey
Ryan

event in general. The secondary geo-demographic will be located in the south, around London
as it is home to some very big clubs such as Chelsea and West Ham. the passion for these
clubs will not be as large as it is for some of the northern clubs but lots of people still visit
games and support their team greatly. Also, the political views may change with the secondary
audience because of the south being its location. The views and opinions may mean that the
magazine readers and consumers in areas which match our secondary geo-demographic will
vote for the conservative party as London is a city which is dominated by Conservative
constituencies.
The tertiary audience for Final Whistle will be females who are into football and also sports in
general. Women who are into football magazines only cover around 10% of the market so this
means that catering to their interests is not a priority in comparison to if what our primary
audience wants to see. The age for the tertiary demographic will be people aged 7-18 as a
younger generation of football fans may read Final Whistle to expand their knowledge although
they might find it hard to understand some of the content or simply may not be interested in
some of the stories due to their language or general content. The political views of this
audience will be not biased at all and will generally have no political opinion whatsoever as they
are young and most of the time, politics will not be an interest. The geodemographic for our
magazine will be people who like football magazines and football but do not live in the country.
These are a very small number in terms of the people who read it and will have to get the
magazine shipped abroad which has an extra cost.

News Stories

The news stories which we will include in the summer transfer edition of Final Whistle are
exclusively about the rumours and done deals of the transfer window. The main story which will
be the main feature on the front cover and also the main topic for the double page spread is
surrounding Iniesta’s time at Barcelona and his sudden move to Japanese J-League team,
Vissel Kobe. This is because Iniesta has been a great footballer throughout his long career at
Barcelona and a tribute directed towards him is well deserved. Other stories which shall feature
on the front cover of Final Whistle is the rumour that Brazilian midfielder Fred will complete a
transfer from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk to Premier League giant Manchester United.
Also, we will note the rumour that young AC Milan goalkeeper and Italian prospect may
potentially move to Liverpool. The news about premier league legend Wayne Rooney moving to
the MLS as well as new Arsenal manager Unai Emery.

The news stories that I will include in the January Transfer edition are based on the biggest and
hyped up transfers with the league. Franklin College signings will be the main attraction of the
magazine and I will be the main transfer that the magazine focuses on, because it is I can also
look at the way the league is looking and who is looking on form etc. The form of other players
in the team.
Matt
Corey
Ryan

The news stories I will include in my season preview edition will be new signings for example I
will write about the new signing of the Brazilian Fred to Man United as this is a transfer that
most our target audience will know about however they may not know much about the player as
he played in the Ukrainian league and this is a league that is not shown in the UK so our target
audience will want to find out more about the player. Another news story could be based on
Manchester City and how they will try and defend their title this season. The target audience will
be interested in this as Man City won the Premier League so impressively last season so it will
be intriguing to see their plans for this year to stay a step above their challengers. A final news
story will be Tottenham's move to their new stadium as it was a big talking point last season
about Spurs playing at Wembley. So we could have a first look at their new stadium and see
how it will compare to their old home, White Hart Lane.

Draft Article

The rain was falling, as I walked into Franklin FC’s state of the art training facilities. The manager invited me
over to watch the fast-paced, high-intensity training drills. The players looked in high spirits coming up to the
first weekend of the much anticipated Premier League season. There is one individual I’ve come to see; a
young prodigy destined for greatness after soaring through the ranks in the youth academy, finishing top scorer
with 42 goals in all competitions and now he is ready to lead the line in the first team. That individual is Corey
Nixon.
After the rest of the squad left the building I sat down with the man himself. I was eager to find out what the key
is to his winning mentality and to discover more about the personality and lifestyle behind the footballer we see
on the pitch. He greeted me with a handshake and a warm smile, instantly I realized this is going to be an easy
interview, as he displayed his down to earth nature. “So a first-team contract - you’re living the dream, flash
cars and mansions from now on?” I joked. “I wish!, I like to keep myself grounded, I take inspiration from
Anthony Joshua, he lives at home with his parents to keep himself focused. I only want to play football and
succeed, I don’t want the luxuries distracting me” he said with determination in his voice. His answer impressed
me. It is all too easy to get sucked into the ‘footballers lifestyle’. At this point, I realized this 17-year-old is going
far. I followed up with a question that I would hope would take him back to his childhood and upbringing. “When
did you realize you wanted to be a footballer?”. “One of my earliest memories is my mum buying my first
football when I was young and I used to kick the ball against the garage walls over and over to practice my first
touch. I loved it and since then I’ve always known. This shows Nixon’s passion for the game very clearly.
”leading the line for Franklin FC next season is a big step up, are you ready?”
I’ve never felt fitter and stronger than I am right now, I am well prepared and ready to win the golden boot this
season!”. The confidence of Nixon here shows that he really is serious and backs his own abilities. “Where do
you see yourself in the future, club-wise?” I asked. “At the moment all my focus is towards Franklin FC, I’m not
sure what the future holds, I just want to be scoring goals,” he says with determination in his eyes.
“You clearly back your own abilities; Where do you think your potential will lead you?”
“Trust me on this, I will be a Ballon d'Or winner within the next five years. I am capable of anything if I work
hard and put my mind to it, that is a lesson I think everyone can learn”

After speaking to Corey Nixon, my first thought is that I have just spoken to one of the future stars of the game,
his determination and passion is frighteningly high and I can not wait to see what the future has in store for him.

It's now January and Franklin have signed a new youngster that might have something to say.
Over the past 2 months of him signings we have witnessed 15 goals in 12 games, including the
cups that he has played in. We have paid attention the way he plays and I’m afraid to say, this
kid is good and he will be going to a bigger club next season for sure.

Who will your write/editor be?

We have decided to create our own unique version of ‘Final Whistle’, so we will be making our
own magazines with news stories that we have picked ourselves. We have also decided to have
3 completely magazines. I am going to do the January Transfer Window. This will include news
stories about transfer rumours and also general that occurs in this time. The main focus will be
on the big transfers and also the controversial transfers that people will have a lot to say about.

My magazine will be on the upcoming Premier League season and what is to come, the new
fixtures, predictions, transfers and contract signings. The main focus will be on the players who
are predicted to have a great season, for example my double page spread will be on Franklin FC
star, Corey Nixon. The writer and editor for this magazine will be I, Matthew Pearson.

Conventions To Use In Our Magazine

On our front cover there will obviously be a masthead. The masthead will be bold and will stand
out on the cover. We will be including ‘buzzwords’ like ‘Exclusive’. This will encourage the reader
to buy the magazine as you can’t read the stories anywhere else. The magazines will have
coverlines over the front page to tell the reader what is to come in the magazine. The main
cover line will be the most exciting story. Our magazines will include interviews, opinions and
facts and information.

Launch Dates

We are hopefully going to Launch our magazines when things the news happened, we will
quickly find the news and publish the magazine.

Legal And Ethical Issues

Firstly we need to make sure that the images we use for the magazine are our own or we have
permission to use other people’s images. To prevent from copyright issues we will take our own
photographs for our magazine. Also the advertisements on the magazine must be appropriate
for our target audience. For example as we are targeting over 18’s we are allowed to advertise
gambling and alcohol, these adverts need to state that you need to gamble and drink
responsibly, legally we need to make sure the advertisements state this. Ethically and legally we
should never discriminate on a players - race, sexuality and background. The IPSO say that ‘the
press must avoid prejudicial or pejorative reference to an individual's, race, colour, religion, sex,
gender identity, sexual orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability.’ We should
report on footballers with different backgrounds as certain footballers may represent a certain
ethnic background and they can be representative to part of our readership. We should also be
careful that we do not report offensive material, however our magazine is football based and
Matt
Corey
Ryan

not tabloid esque so it will be hard to write offensive material. However if footballers get into
certain scandals we will have to be careful on what we report.

Budget

For our budget, we will have to pay for all the staff that are involved in the magazine. For
example, the graphic designer, the journalist, etc. We will use some of our money to get the
best news, news that other people don’t have. We will have to pay companies that supply the
kits for the players in the magazine or they could file against for not having a contract with them.
Within the pay for the staff, annually we pay £200 for an hour in the studio. We will next will pay
a weekly wage for the people that we hire. We will pay annually £21,000 for our graphic
designer which will lead to them getting £400 a week. For our journalists, we are looking to pay
them £20,000 a year which allocates them £384 a week.

We have used this font as our masthead as it is unique and stands out from all the other
football magazines. It is bold and will be eye catching to the audience alongside all the other
magazines in the shops.
