Flexner was well known for 1910 evaluation of the professional status of
medical school. He then proposed that in order to be recognize as professions
all occupation must meet these criteria.
1. Professions involve essential intellectual operations
2. They derive their raw materials from science and learning

Autonomy
Autonomy words literally means self-governing.” The concept of nursing
autonomy can be discussed on two levels: autonomy of the profession and
autonomy of the individual practitioner. Self-regulation is the mark of
collective professional autonomy Individual autonomy individual autonomy
involves self-determination, responsibility, accountability, independence, and
a willingness to take the risk. Autonomy is generally considered to be an
important criterion in judging professional status of an occupation. People
who are considered to be professionals have the power and authority to
control various aspects of their work, including goals toward which to work,
whether to work and with whom, details of how the work is to be done,
choice of clientele , and so forth. Professions also maintain their autonomy
by means of monopoly over their work.
Accountability
According to the American nurse association accountability refers to being
answerable to someone for something one has done. It is grounded in the
moral principles of fidelity and respect for dignity, worth, and self-
determination of clients.
Safe autonomous practice is ensured through various processes of nursing
accountability.
Accountability is related to both responsibility and answerability.
Authority
The term authority relates to the state of having legitimate power and
sovereignty. The grating authority acknowledges the professional’s right
and responsibilities, and in turn requires that there be mechanisms for public
accountability. Society grants the professions authority over functions vital to
itself and permits them considerable autonomy in the conduct of their affairs.
In return, the professions are expected to act responsibly, always mindful of
the public trust.
Unity
There is general agreement that one of the defining characteristics of a
profession is a sense of unity among its members. This unity is multifaceted
and base on what is called moral uniformity and class ideology among its
practitioners. Unity relates to the ability of nurse to organize for the purpose
of fulfilling the profession’s promises and the relationships that nurse have
with one another.
The professional’s bond with colleagues emanates from relationships
established by shared mysteries of a common technical language, educational
background, rites of passage, styles of work, attire, and from other.
