GE Grid Solutions
Multilin 650 Family
Firmware Version 7.20
Release Note
Overview
Summary
GE Grid Solutions releases Multilin 650 Family Firmware version 7.20 and Enervista 650 Setup
software version 7.20. This firmware is specific to the 650 Family of products and does not affect
other devices.
7.20 release of the 650 product platform introduces software and firmware improvements of the
C650 and F650 devices.
Highlights include:
IEC61850 Edition 2 KEMA certification
Number of Under/Over Frequency units is increased
Configuration of two different SNTP masters is supported
Logical node RDRE
Latched LEDs on the HMI
ON and OFF PLC masks
Analog operators in PLC Editor
This document contains the release note for firmware version 7.20 of the Multilin 650 family.
Affected products: C650 & F650
Release date: Mar 14th, 2016
Firmware Version: 7.20
Firmware release date: Mar 8th, 2016
Note: If users have existing 650 devices installed with firmware version below 7.0x, they need
to obtain a new whole relay to benefit from the enhancements described in this release note.
If the user does not require these new features and enhancements, no upgrade of the relays
is required.
Products Affected
Firmware Compatibility
The 7.20 firmware is not compatible with previous F650 CPU hardware (Rear Ethernet
Communication Board types B, C, D and E). Existing B, C, D and E options still benefit from the
previous CPU hardware.
The 7.20 firmware runs only on the new G, H, J, K, L & M CPU modules. The 7.20 firmware requires
EnerVista 650 Setup software version 7.2x or higher. GE suggests using the latest version of the
software.
Release details
In the following enhancement descriptions, a revision category letter is placed to the left of the
description. Refer to the Appendix at the end of this document for a description of the categories
displayed.
Common features
To meet the need for IEC61850 Edition 2 KEMA certification, F650 and C650 devices have been tested
and accredited by KEMA.
The number of under and over frequency units is increased to six while other characteristics will
remain the same.
The Multilin 650 is now capable of accepting time synchronization signals from up to two different
SNTP servers. Each SNTP servers are user configurable (SNTP1 or/and SNTP2). SNTP2 server will work
as back-up of SNTP1 server.
To comply with KEMA requirements, Logical Node RDRE has been added.
LEDs are configurable as latched from the “Relay Configuration” screen instead of using the PLC
Editor.
Two new inputs are added to PLC editor (PLC_BOOL_ON and PLC_BOOL_OFF). These two inputs are
set always to PLC_BOOL_ON =1 and PLC_BOOL_OFF =0 and their values are not accessible via
protocol and cannot be modified.
Analog operands are available in PLC Editor. This feature includes operands shown in the following
table:
D Snapshot events log does not display state information for the control events.
Shapshot events log did not display state information of control events. In this new release, status of
control events is reported and logged in snapshot events.
Maximum number of DAs to be configured in transmission GOOSES was limited up to 64. This issue
has been corrected and now, up to 128 DAs are permitted.
Quality change trigger option could not be set to true neither by using IEC 61850 Configurator nor
IEC 61850 Client. When IEC 61850 Client tried to change this setting to true, an error reply message
was sent. In this new firmware release, quality change trigger option can be configured and modified
properly.
G Modification of default power factor value when there are no voltage and current
readings
Default power factor value has been modified to 0.0 instead of 1.0.
C MMS- Port & Timeout settings have been included in ICD file
MMS-Port and Timeout settings were not available to be configured in ICD file. Now, both settings are
accessible and configurable.
E Relay setpoint checksum does not match with setpoint checksum value calculated by
Enervista 650 PC from *.650 file.
Different results were obtained for setpoint checksum calculated by relay and checksum calculated
by using Enervista 650 PC (*.650 file). Now, both setpoint checksum values do match.
Upgrade path
Upgrading F650 devices installed with firmware versions below 7.0x requires replacement of the
whole relay. New relay requires choosing of the new [G, H, J, K, L or M] characters on the ordering
code “Rear Ethernet Communication Board 2” option.
Enervista 650 Setup software can convert settings files from an older version to the latest version.
Besides it also provides a tool to compare settings files of different versions. This tool generates a
Difference Report. This Difference Report identifies new settings and additional information to assist
the user during the upgrade.
Please contact your local GE sales representative or Customer Service Department (CST) for any
questions regarding this upgrade.
Appendix
Change categories
This document uses the following categories to classify the changes.
Table 1: Revision categories
N New feature A separate feature added to the relay. Changes to existing features even
if they significantly expand the functionality are not in this category
G Change A neutral change that does not bring any new value and is not correcting
any known problem
D Changed, incomplete or false Changes to, or problems with text messages, LEDs and user pushbuttons
faceplate indications
R Changed, incomplete or false relay Changes to, or problems with relay records (oscillography, demand, fault
records reports, etc.)
C Protocols and communications Changes to, or problems with protocols or communication features
P Protection out of specification Protection operates correctly but does not meet published specifications
(example: delayed trip)
