years.

Asian, and others.

students on standardized academic achievement tests and above average on SAT
and ACT tests.
• Nevada saves about $113.8 million due to homeschoolers
• Registration varies by state so this number is conservative.
• Homeschooling has also been growing in other nations as well (Australia, Canada,
Japan, Russia, UK, and others).
• Demographically wide variety of people homeschooled
Methods and Styles
• Relaxed or Eclectic- used most often, uses workbooks for math, reading, and
spelling, and then taking unschooling approach for other subjects.
• School-at-home approach- most expensive method, portrayed in media, and
highest burnout rate. Boxed curriculum with textbooks, study schedules,
grades, and record keeping.
• Unschooling- natural, interest-led, and child-led learning
• Classical- grammar stage, logic stage, and rhetoric stage
Methods and Styles
• Charlotte Mason- given time to play, create and be involved in real-life situations.
Educate whole person, not just the mind.
• Waldorf- based on the work of Rudolf Steiner. Early grades emphasize arts and
crafts, music and movement, and nature. Older children are taught self-awareness
and how to reason things out.
• Multiple Intelligences- everyone learns in their own way, uses strengths instead of
weaknesses.
• Montessori- “errorless learning”, learn at their own pace, self-directed, and hands-on

• Why?
• Moved abroad to Germany. They couldn’t facilitate her level of knowledge at

grade. She took 5-month summers.
• Pros?
• Moving at own speed, very quick, didn’t get bored, ability to travel during
school, travel with curriculum, Greek mythology (Greece), Irish Culture
(Ireland), Concentration camps, Mona Lisa(Paris), being part of history,
learning languages, did sports, was be able to work at own pace at home but
still hang out with kids her own age.
• Cons?
• Too much time with kids, not enough alone time
• Cost
• $6000 a year homeschooling, extra materials. $27,000 a year for international.
• Process and type of homeschooling
• Use Nevada as residency, submit form, had advisory teacher for each year
