word processing computer application software (i.e. Microsoft
Office Word 2007). At the end of this tutorial, you should be
able to prepare a document similar to this booklet.

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD

Microsoft Word (MS Word) is a Word Processor. It is a
computer application software used for typing and formatting
texts and objects. It is used for making different types of
documents such as letters, notice, assignments, school
projects, etc.
You can make a fantastic document with MS Word by applying
different formats to the texts that you’ve typed from the
keyboard and the shapes you’ve drawn with the mouse.
1. TEXTS are the characters or letters you typed from the

keyboard, words and sentences.
PAPER SIZE, PAGE ORIENTATION, TEXT SELECTION

2. Before you start making your document with Microsoft
Word, you should setup your Page correctly to what you
want, this will allow you to print properly when you’re
done making the document.
- Set your Paper Size; A4 is a very popular paper size
available.
- Set your Page Orientation to either Portrait or
Landscape. Portrait is the vertical position;
Landscape is the horizontal position.
Actions (Paper Size):
o Click Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

o Click Size on the Page Setup group and select A4.

o Click Orientation on the Page Setup group and select Portrait or
Landscape.
3. Before you can apply formatting to the texts you typed,

you must first select it.

o Move your mouse pointer to where you want to start the selection.
o Click and hold the mouse left button on your mouse. Then drag the
mouse pointer over the area of text you want to select.

4. You can apply different formats to your texts like Bold,
Italics, Underline and Font Color.
- Bold will make the texts double dark.
- Italics will make the texts be in slants form.
- Underline will draw line at the bottom of the texts.
- Font Color is the colour of your texts.

o Select the texts you want to apply bold.

o Click Home tab on the Ribbon.
o Click B on the Font group.

o Select the texts you want to apply italics.

o Click I on the Font group.
Actions (Underline):
o Select the texts you want to apply underline.

o Click U on the Font group. You can click the arrow on the right side to
choose different style of underline.

o Select the texts you want to apply font color.

o Click on the Font group. You can click the arrow on the right side
to select different color.

5. You can also set the position for your texts, may be right
or left or center of the page; justify will stretch the texts
to form a block from left to right of the page.
- Align Left: will put the texts to the left side of the

- Align Right: will put the texts to the right side of the
page.

o Select the texts you want to apply alignment.

o Click on the Paragraph group.

- Title Case = Capitalize first letter of every word.
- Sentence case = Capitalize only first letter of the
sentence.
- tOGGLE cASE = only first letter of each word is
small letter.

o Select the texts you want to change to capital letters.

o Click on the Font group.
o Select UPPERCASE from the dropdown list.

o Select the texts you want to change to small letters.

o Select lowercase from the dropdown list

o Select the texts you want to change to title case.

o Select Capitalize Each Word from the dropdown list.

o Select the texts you want to change to Sentence Case.

o Select the texts you want to change to toggle case.

8. You can also change the font type of the texts. The FONT
is the look or style of the text. There are different types
of fonts you can choose like ALGERIAN, Comic Sans
MS, Monotype Corsiva, etc.

o Select the texts you want to change the font type.

o Click arrow at the right side of on the Font group.

o Select your desired font style from the dropdown list.
9. You can also change the size of the texts, big and small. It
is called Font Size. There are different Font sizes like 12,
14, 16, 18, 24, …
