of comfort.
The Syncro was back on the road again in
April 2017 and its first major long distance
run, was to attend Vanfest at Malvern in
September. We were fairly nervous at the start

ames and Lauren paid £1,600 for their
Bay Window on eBay a few years ago
and with all due respect, that sort of
money doesn’t buy you very much at all,
so the Bay was clearly due a great deal of
restorative work!
After its purchase, the Bay sat for around
18 months to two years, while James and
Lauren moved house. It was just about
running, with a 1500cc twin port engine,
which was swiftly replaced by an AD code
1600cc secondhand engine, another eBay
purchase! “We took a chance with this
engine, but so far it has proved to be a good

and reliable runner,” says James. “Originally
our Bay was painted green, but when we
acquired it, the paintwork was a kind of
maroon colour, so we decided to go back to
green, but using a lighter shade, which is a
genuine VW colour, with a contrasting Pastel
White for the roof and bumpers.”
The Bay didn’t have any interior trim
when bought, so James got surfing the ‘Net
again and eBay came up trumps, with a set
of light wooden base units. The cab floor is
carpeted with coconut matting which looks
excellent, a new rock ‘n’ roll bed has been
installed and all that remains now is for the

cushions to be fitted and the interior is pretty
well finished, other than some very minor
detailing. “Richard at RCS who is based in
Matfield, Kent, was responsible for most of
the restoration work,” explains James. “He
did the entire bodywork and then painted
the Bay. It was back on the road again for
June 2016.”

in Kent, did a great job with the interior
cushions, curtains and bunk wraps”
enthused Lauren. A holiday touring Cornwall
beckons for the Reach family, in their newly
restored Bay.

Electric As much as we all love our air-cooled engines, their
days are numbered. Fortunately, there is a solution

A
s much as we try to bury our heads
in the sand, the writing has been on
the wall for the internal combustion
engine for years. You only have to
look at the soaring cost of petrol at the pumps,
Low Emission Zones and Scrappage schemes
to reach the same conclusion - we’re heading
towards a greener world without fossil fuels.
Only the likes of Trump or Clarkson would
argue for a case against this, but where does
that leave the classic car lover. The thought of
having to give up driving your air-cooled VW
doesn’t even bare thinking about. You love it,
you cherish it and you hope that one day you’ll
pass it on to your children who’ll do the same.
Only they won’t be able to drive it with it’s dirty,
noisy, pollution spouting air-cooled engine…
The tide is going out on petrol powered cars,
and there’s no turning it back. All of the major
motoring manufacturers have recognised this
and are investing billions into electrification.
Heck, from next year every new Volvo will come
with an electric motor of some description.

Fortunately, there is a company, not quite
on the scale of Volvo, who are investing in this
technology for us, the air-cooled VW owner.
Electric Campervans (www.electric-campers.
com) are a little closer to home - West Sussex to
be precise - and what you’re looking at here is
the world’s first fully electric Bay Window Bus
that you can go out and buy, right now.
Forward thinking
The man behind the company is Ian Harris,
a name that should be familiar to long term
readers of Camper&Bus magazine. We’ve
featured a vast array of Buses that were restored
and re-engineered under his watchful eye at
VW Kampers Ltd. but that company, has now
been split into two companies called VW-T and
Brazilian Campers (www.braziliankampers.
co.uk). The former, specialises in converting
modern T5s and T6s into Campers, whilst the
latter specialises in Brazilian-built Bay Windows.
It was whilst working on these Brazilian Bays
that the idea of a fully electric Bay took root.

“The more I looked into it, the more
it makes sense”
Ian says: “We stopped restoring original, classic
air-cooled VWs and began specialising in the
later Bays from Brazil. But what we found was
that of all the vehicles we sold, only 5% were
fitted with an air-cooled engine, and the only
Buses we ever had any problems with were
those fitted with air-cooled engines…
Infernal combustion engines
“It wasn’t even so much the fault of the VW
itself. Some customers just don’t look after
them the way they need looking after. They’ll sit
unused for a number of weeks and then they’ll
jump in them and expect them to work just like
their modern daily driver.
“We switched over to fitting Subaru engines,
but that wasn’t ideal. You’d have to buy a donor
vehicle with an unknown engine, go through it,
fit it and it just wasn’t workable.

“It was then, that a hotel approached us to
see if we could build them a Bus to ferry their
residents about. The caveat was that it had
to be 100% electric, so I said no, because the
technology didn’t exist at the time. But I went
away and thought about it and started doing
some research into the matter.
“The more I looked into it, the more it makes
sense. Hybrid vehicles are the future, everyone is
scared of diesel and there are a few kits already
quite popular in America, but at the time no one
had ever fitted one in a Type 2.
“My research lead me to Richard Morgan
and Graham Swann at Electric Classic Cars in
Wales (www.electricclassiccars.co.uk). They’d
converted the Beetle that was at last years
VolksWorld Show and having met and discussed
the ins and outs of it with them, I decided to
develop Electric Campers.

 “The guinea pig is this 1975 eight-seater
Microbus. It’s a rot-free South African import
with an original interior that needed minimal
work before we could start converting it.
It’s our test vehicle that we’ve done all of
our development work on and use it as a
demonstrator. Everyone that has driven it has
been blown away by it.
“To convert it we removed the original engine
and fuel tank. This gives us room in the engine
bay for the 12 Tesla batteries that are mounted
longways in the compartment to fill the space
where the tank used to sit. Tesla batteries are
the best in the world and we mount and wire
ours in the same way as Tesla.
“The replacement unit for the air-cooled
engine is a powerful 52kw motor bolted to the
original gearbox via a CNC’d adapter plate.
“We have to use heavy duty Kennedy racing
clutches to cope with the torque the motor puts
out as the old air-cooled engines have around

47bhp and these engines have three times
that power and generate 190 newton-metres
of torque. And it’s instant power and torque as
soon as you press the throttle pedal.
“We replaced the standard throttle cable with
a fly-by-wire sensor and because there’s no
engine, and therefore no heating, we’ve fitted an
electric variable speed heater.
On the road
“It’s eerily quiet when you drive it. The only
sound is when you turn the key and hear the
pump that creates a vacuum for the brake servo.
It drives like a regular Bus, but if you want, you
can just leave it in fourth gear and it will pull
away like an automatic. You can just put your
foot on the brake at traffic lights and let it off
to go. When you get to a hill you start laughing
because it will just keep accelerating up them.
And, if it’s wet, you can put it in first and make it
spin the rear wheels.”

 It’s hard to imagine a more enthusiastic
advocate for the technology when you talk to
Ian, and he has an answer to each and everyone
of our concerns when we put them to him.
Things like the range and longevity of the motor,
to which he says: “We currently say it has a
range of 150 miles, but that’s a calculation. The
last time ours was charged was in December,
and it’s now February. We drove it over the
Christmas period and throughout January and
it’s currently on 68% battery. We’re running it
down to see just how far it will go, but we’re
thinking it’s range is more like 250 miles.”
Compare even the most conservative estimate
to the likes of the hybrid Golf GTE, which VW
says has a range of 118 miles in full-electric
mode and those are some impressive figures.
When it’s been sitting, it doesn’t lose any
charge and when you’re driving it and come off
the power, for example when going down a hill,
it has a regeneration system, like an F1 car, that
puts power back into the batteries, as the motor
turns into an alternator.

Oil be damned
Unlike a regular air-cooled engine it doesn’t
require any maintenance, as the motor and
batteries are sealed units. The only service work
required is routine work to things like brakes
and greasing the front axle.
Plus, once registered on the V5 as an
emissions free electric vehicle it’s tax and
congestion charge exempt.
The only down side is the initial cost. Ian says:
“It’s currently £25 - £30,000 for the conversion,
not including the price of the base vehicle. It’s
down to the price of the batteries and motors,
although we hope to be able to buy those in
bulk, which will bring the cost down. Battery
technology is moving at an insane rate and
smaller, lighter batteries with larger ranges are
being created all the time.” The future is here
already, and it’s VW shaped. How cool is that?

is its diversity and it’s a
big part of why most of
us are here. From stock
to custom and from junkyard
dogs to six-figure restorations,
all are welcome in our world.
My conversation with Jerry
Tattershall, the owner of this
unrestored ’67 Split, took me
back to a simpler time, a time
when it felt like you were only
ever a decent set of wheels, or
a nice set of headlamp grilles
away from a ride that could
hold it’s own at any VW show.
Are my glasses rose-tinted?
Most probably. But it still
doesn’t detract from the fact

that a great many air-cooled
VWs on the road today have a
look about them that, 20 years
ago would have seen them
winning every trophy in sight.
Restored Buses are pretty
much the norm these days and
in reality make a lot of sense.
The older they get, the more
likely it is they’re going to need
some form of work to keep
them on the road and, whilst
you’re replacing the bottom six
inches, you might as well treat
it all to a fresh coat of paint.
And it’s great people are willing
to do it because it guarantees
these vehicles survival for at
least another generation.
The flip side to that coin is
that unrestored Buses - those
in a what can best be described
as in their raw state - are
becoming rarer. So rare, in fact,
that the price for an unrestored
patina Bus often matches and
in some cases, exceeds that of
a freshly restored VW. Indeed,
all life really is here!
New-stalgia
It is for these very reasons
that Jerry’s Bus made me
come over all nostalgic. It’s a
strange feeling to feel that way
for a decade as recent as the
late ’90s, but here I am all the
same and I’m not even going

 to apologise. The interior is
sparse, the cab seats are beat
up and you can see at least
three different colours of paint
from the driver’s seat. Equally
it’s 51-years-old, an original
Panel Van and a daily driver.
Choose your battles. Jerry has
and his beloved Split is all the
better for it, but that’s just my
own humble opinion.
Jerry can
So, what’s the deal with this
’67 survivor? It came from
North Carolina in the late
1990s after being laid up in a
field for years. Jerry got hold
of it in 2000 and says: “When
I went to see it, it was covered
in Grateful Dead stickers and
one in particular that said
‘Thank you, Jerry.’ It was riding
at stock height on 356 style
wheels at the time. I really
wanted to lower it as I had just
sold a Karmann Ghia that was
slammed. It was a lot harder
to get hold of bits for lowering
Buses back then, but Steve
Walker, who was local to me in
Sheffield, sorted me out with a
set of dropped spindles.”
The back end got familiar
with a straight axle set up,
spinning from a high ratio SA
gearbox. Jerry then picked up a
reconditioned 1600 engine with
twin Dellorto 36 carbs and,

since around 2003 when this
work was completed, nothing
much has changed. The end.
Ok, I’m kidding, there’s a lot
more to it than that.
This isn’t Jerry’s first rodeo
when it comes to the world
of Split Screen Buses. By the
time you get to read this, Jerry
will have sailed past his half
century to a little ripple of
applause from his friends and
family. What that delivers to
our context is the fact that,
in 1988 he was of the perfect
vintage to find himself the
owner of a right-hand drive
11-window ’67 Bus, bought
from Alan Schofield for the
princely sum of £900.
What would the current
market value on a RHD
11-window be? Anyone’s guess,
but it’s safe to say his £900
would have shown a pretty
phenomenal return. Jerry: “I
have tried to track that Bus
down a couple of times, and
as far as I understand, it is still
registered and on the road.”
A similar fate almost befell
this ’67, well it did, but then it
didn’t, so let’s talk about that.
In 2011, Jerry and his then-
partner bought their first home
together. To help with the
mortgage, the Split was offered
like some kind of sacrificial
metal cow to the gods of

 Capitalism. The Bus headed
east to Norfolk, whilst Jerry’s
relationship slowly headed
south. In 2016, things came to
a head, the house was sold and
Jerry moved away.
Man on a mission
First things first, he went on
a mercy mission to recover
his Bus. He says: “I’d seen
the guy posting pictures of
it online. It looked as though
he was stripping it down, so I
messaged him and asked if he
would sell it back, but a few
months passed and I didn’t
hear anything.” Eventually,
Jerry hit the Tinder of VW
in search of a new love –
otherwise known as thesamba.
com. Jerry: “I found a nice ’59
in London and arranged to
go and see it. When I arrived
I called the guy for further
directions but couldn’t get hold
of him. He called later that
day to say he’d already sold

it!” Not cool. But, on his return
to Sheffield after a right royal
waste of time, Jerry rolled the
dice once more with his old
Bus. Amazingly, the stars had
aligned and the owner was
prepared to sell. Jerry: “When
I picked it up, it was just like
putting on an old pair of
trainers. It felt like we’d never
been apart. It cost a little more
than the £3,500 I originally paid
for it in 2000 though, but it was
worth every penny!”
As his one and only vehicle,
hence daily driver, Jerry really
has no desire to make this ’67
anything more than it is. He
can throw his tools in without
fear of scratching the interior,
and is perfectly happy parking
it in any supermarket car
park. There have been a few
additions since it’s triumphant
return, such as the Boatyard
Buses Hurst-style bumper, and
the roofrack of unknown origin
but with VW of America style

Jerry’s old friend from school,
Mark Arnall, runs Arnie’s Bug
Shop and has taken care of the
maintenance side of things.
Jerry says: “I used to do it all
myself, but Arnie saves me the

storing it in the Van for a while,
he realised the dimensions
worked out perfectly so that

of a couple of legs, it made an

in the back. He just adds an air
mattress and he’s good to go!
It’s genius creations like
this that have made me all
nostalgic. This is exactly the
kind of thing that VW people
are good at. It might not look
the prettiest, but it gets the job
done. Let’s just hope the art of
creativity is never lost. Even if
it does mean the use of the odd
BMW body part.
Over the course of the last
few years Jerry has sadly lost
both his father, Richard, and
his brother, John. They often
used to poke fun at him for
insisting on driving round in
a “sh*tty old Bus.” But, he’s
still doing it and intends to
keep on doing it. This Bus, and
this feature are dedicated to

What would you do if you bought an absolute snotter of Bus
that was too far gone to be saveable? Would you do this?

f you’ve been around the VW scene for a
while, have attended a bunch of shows, and
know your air-cooled onions, you’ll have
spotted a number of these odd-balls from
time to time. They tend to spring up when you
least expect them, as this one did whilst our
Editor was meandering around the campsite at
last years European Bug In. Much as he did, you
might at first think it’s a Jurgens Autovilla, or a
Karmann Gypsy, but you’d be wrong, because
this creation - which looks like the result of a
Bay and a caravan sharing a night of unbridled
passion - is actually home built.
What you’re looking at is the handiwork
of Simon Evans of Evans Campers in Llanelli,
Carmarthenshire (Tel: 07773 356348).
It’s not the first such DIY Cara-Bay-thing
we’ve featured. That honour goes to Guy Terry of
Slamwerks fame, who built The Rubber Tramp,
which went on to become the Cool Flo Cooler.
Little did Guy know that his creation would

inspire others to build a Bay Window with a few
more creature comforts and a heck of a lot more
interior space.
But that is exactly what happened, because
when Simon bought a Late Bay Window in
need of “a little work”, it ended up needing a
lot more than he ever envisaged. Simon says:
“When I started to dig into the Bus, there was
so much welding to do; the back end was rotten
and it was a Panel Van with windows cut in to it
anyway, that I just decided to cut the back off!”
While this might sound a tad extreme, a trip
to the blasters had actually revealed a object
more akin to a tea bag than VW’s finest.
Teeing off
For someone with lesser skills, this could have
all ended with a cutting party and a visit from
the scrap metal man, but, even though Simon
didn’t really start with a plan, he knew it would
turn out OK. He says: “To start with, I was going

to turn it into a Pick-Up, I knew I had to do
something with it so that it wasn’t a total waste
of money buying it”.
Before he started Evans Campers, Simon
had worked as a fabricator for many years.
This stood him in good stead to fabricate the
framework for the entire rear end of the Bus
out of aluminium box section. He says: “I bent
up the corners on the rollers and TIG welded
everything together.” When he says it like that,
it sounds easy, but we can assure you it isn’t
– having tried TIG on aluminium myself a few
years ago, it’s like night and day as opposed to
welding steel.
With the structure fully welded together and
the Bus looking like it was built to transport wild
animals, our man could now cover the structure
in aluminium sheet, before shifting his focus to
the cab. Simon: “The roof and floors were pretty
good, but everything else needed some help; I

welded in new arches and put a new front on
it, then did quite a bit to the doors.” Being a UK
vehicle with completely rotten rear bodywork,
we reckon Simon got lucky not having to patch
up the roof gutters on the cab, but no two VWs
seem to rust in quite the same way.
Coffee mate
With the main structure of the vehicle now
completed, Simon could relax over a cup of
coffee and think about paint colours. In fact,
Simon drew inspiration from the coffee pot
itself. He says: “I was looking at the coffee pot
while we were having a coffee and realised it
was a lovely golden-brown colour, so I decided
to pick a similar hue for the Bay.”
With the vision of the snail coming together,
Simon knew he didn’t actually want a Bus that
drove like a snail too, so he picked up a normally
aspirated 2-litre engine from a Subaru Impreza.

 Rather than mating this up to the stock late
Bay gearbox though and getting a lot of noise at
motorway speeds, our man wisely chose to have
the ‘box rebuilt with a higher final drive.
Cool runnings
With the Scooby engine in and running, Simon
was free to turn his attention to the rolling
stock. Running a caravan body on the back of a
Bay Window Bus presents a problem most of us
haven’t come across before - it means the stock
sized rear wheels and tyres look completely lost
in the rest of the bodywork. Not wanting this
look and also with one eye on better handling,
Simon had the original rear wheels banded to
10J and the front to 8J. The 175/14 front tyres he
opted to fit were pretty easy to source, but when
it came to locating the rear tyres, he had a pretty
hard time finding what he was looking for.
Eventually, and after much searching, he
discovered a hot rod company who could supply
the 235/14 rear tyres and the result is a very
retro looking ’70s van-styled Camper.
When asked what this massive tin snail is
like to drive, Simon has this to say: “It keeps up
with traffic, but as you’d expect, it still catches
the wind. The furthest I’ve been so far is to the
European Bug-In in Belgium and it drove great,
all things considered, but a lowered front beam
is definitely on the cards to improve both looks
and handling.”

Of course, we’re getting ahead of ourselves; it’s
one thing having a vehicle in paint and running,
but another thing entirely to have it complete,
kitted out and ready for camping.
Being the owner of a successful camper
conversions company though, Simon wasn’t
overly concerned with this stage and had a few

different ideas about what to do. He says: “I
started out with a load of rough sawn timber,

Of course, this was just the beginning and
Simon continued with the coffee theme. Our
hero got hold of a load of coffee sacks to do
cover both the cab interior panels and headliner
but it was at that point that he had a Eureka
moment. Simon says: “I laid some coffee sacks
down on the floor in the back and sealed them
in place with epoxy resin. I was so pleased with
it, that I then did the same to the work tops,
only this time I used magazine pictures of Buses
and Beetle’s that we’ve built.”
Of course, you wouldn’t expect a Bus built by
a Camper conversion company without a few
electrical tricks and this Bus is no exception.

There’s the usual fare of 240-volt hook up, a
plethora of USB sockets and a TV that swings
down from above the cab area where the kids
usually sleep.
The result of all this hard work and thinking
outside the box is a completely unique interior,
which offers Simon, his other half Karen and
youngest son Mawgan a great place to sleep at
VW shows and on weekends away at the beach
– which they do on a regular basis.
Eldest son Kallum, whilst being a bit old to get
away with the family now, also had a hand in
building the Bus and we have to say it’s one of
the wildest creations we’ve seen in a long time.
We doff our caps at Simon for having the balls to
do something different with what most people
would have cut their loses with and thrown
away. It takes all sorts to make the world, even
weird tin snails inspired by coffee pots and
Rubber Tramps. Nice one Simon.

2018 Camping weekends, why not check out the legendary Le
Bug Show at Spa Francorchamps? Paul Knight reports on the
show and runs through the logistics for you…

S
o, what is Le Bug Show all
about? Well, it’s one of the
largest air-cooled gatherings
in Europe, which takes place
at the iconic Spa F1 racetrack in
Belgium. And yes, that’s right – it is
100% air-cooled only in the main
arena, which makes it quite unique
for UK visitors. Incidentally, it is
possible to take a water-cooled VW,
but it has to stay in the camping area
and can’t take part in the parade or
any of the main events.
But, if you’ve never been before,

this one truly needs to be on your
VW event bucket list! It’s hard to
describe the sheer scale of the event,
but suffice to say that’s there a show
and shine split across three levels
(full-size car parks) and the trade area
consumes the F1 pit lane! There are
even some special trade booths inside
the bays, which all just adds to the
crazy atmosphere… this really is the
ultimate location for a VW event.
Race fans are not disappointed,
as the track is used for everything
from sprint (drag racing) through to
Formula Vee and full-on German Look
monsters pounding their way around
the Formula 1 circuit.
Of course, there’s evening
entertainment, which takes place in a
huge tent, however we prefer to walk
around the camping area where clubs

If you’ve never been before, it might
make sense to join a club or cruise
and tag along with some more
experienced visitors. If your local club
isn’t already organising a trip, simply
hit up social media! If you search
Facebook for ‘UK cruise to Spa le Bug
Show 2018’, you’ll find some great
information and cruise info, plus you
may even find some local folk to hook
up with, too.
There’s nothing more fun than a
road trip, and if you have any worries
at all, then join up with a cruise
and travel in confidence. If you run
into trouble, there will always be
somebody to help – that’s what the
VW scene is all about!
How far is Spa?
We’ll assume that you’ve made it
to Calais or Dunkirk, in which case
you’re looking at pretty much a three
hour drive (about 200 miles) to get to
Le Bug Show.
On a personal note, living in the
South East, the entire journey is
comparable to attending a West
Country of North or England VW
event – the major different being that
we’ve travelled through 3 countries
and had a real adventure getting to
the legendary F1 track when we head
for Le Bug Show!
But, why drive straight there and
straight back? Remember, there’s
some fabulous scenery around Spa,
so why not book a few extra days and
make a real holiday of it?
In fact, if you’re feeling like a
proper road trip, why not try the
Super VW festival in France the
week before, then spend a few days
heading across to Belgium to check
out Le Bug Show?

You can either travel to Calais (around
100 mins) or to Dunkirk (120 mins) but
the reality is that there’s not much in
it either way (as Dunkirk is technically
closer to Spa, and it takes 20-30 mins to
drive from Calais to Dunkirk anyway).
We’ve always found that the guys
at DFDS have been willing to help us
load awkward loads and low vehicles,
hence we tend to travel on the DFDS
Dover-Dunkirk crossing each year but, of
course, the choice is yours!

The Parade
As if this event didn’t already have
it all, there’s one last attraction that
everyone should take part in at least
once in his or her life… the grand
parade around the legendary Spa F1
track!
Whilst there are various ways
to access the track (in race cars or
as part of a smaller, slightly faster

Essential equipment...
Let’s start with the basic legal
requirements. First, you need to
ensure your Bus is in proper order
– check your wipers, tyres (don’t
forget the spare) and, of course,
lights. Speaking of lights, you’ll need
headlight deflectors, which essentially
convert your lights for use on the
continent (so that your dipped beam
doesn’t blind oncoming traffic when
driving on the other side of the road).
Different countries require different
checklists, but to get to Spa, you’ll be
driving through France and Belgium,
hence the legal required equipment
list includes:-
An emergency triangle, a GB
sticker, a hi-vis jacket for EVERY
passenger, a bulb kit, a first aid kit
and 2 ‘on the spot’ breathalyser kits
(NF certified). That’s as well as the
required paperwork, which should
include your full driving license, the
V5C logbook for the vehicle and
proof of insurance (check that you are
covered to drive in Europe before you
leave…). Whilst it’s not required to
take your UK MoT certificate, if you’re
driving a modified vehicle it can’t
help to have paperwork regarding
road certification with you, especially
if your Bus is seriously slammed etc!
One other thing to remember
is that you are not allowed to use
any Sat Nav devices (Smart phones
included) that include speeding
camera locations or indeed any kind
of speed camera detector etc
Otherwise we’d suggest a fire
extinguisher, a toolbox with at least
the basics (including cable ties, gaffer
tape and the usual emergency repair
goodies), a bottle of water (just in
case you’re stranded for a while!), a
blanket, some Euros (in small change
– for the inevitable toilet stops!) and,
if you can afford it, some kind of
emergency breakdown cover for your
pride and joy!

really is the most fun as far as we’re
concerned. We’re talking about 2000
air-cooled cars cruising around the
track (at very low speed, we should
add) and generally enjoying the
great atmosphere whilst waving to
spectators and other ‘cruisers’. There
really is nothing like it anywhere in
the world – it really is the most fun!
It takes literally hours for
everyone to make it around the
track and, whilst you are supposed
to keep moving, as you’ll see in the
photos, some people stopped off to
photograph and video the spectacle.
Speaking of which, if you search on
social media, you’ll find plenty of
clips of the parade… just check it out
– it really is as much fun as it looks!
Camping at Spa
First of all, we should point out that
whilst it is possible to arrive early and
camp on the outer campsites (in fact,
many do, just to claim a good spot),
you will not be able to enter the main
show area (or paddock / trade areas -
important for those of you planning
to race cars etc) until the show opens.
Our advice for first time attendees
would be to follow signs to the
camping upon arrival, then park up
and go explore a little. Speak to those
camped nearby (everyone speaks
English, hence it’s a great way to

member, EMPI was
located in the heart of
the Performance section.

T
he 2017 SEMA Show, held
October 31 – November 4 in
Las Vegas, Nevada, did not
disappoint the 160,000+ attendees,
despite an initial uneasiness as a result of
the shooting that occurred less than a month
prior that left 58 concert-goers dead and
another 546 injured. SEMA, the Specialty
Equipment Market Association, which
organizes the massive annual trade show,
stepped up security measures throughout the
1.2 million square feet of exhibit space at the
Las Vegas Convention Center, and the grounds
surrounding the venue. We are pleased to
report the show went off without incident.
While the emphasis at the SEMA Show is
centered around the newest, most powerful
vehicles from automakers around the
world, there exists a sizeable group that
is more concerned with the preservation
and restoration of vintage cars and trucks,
along with modifying them for increased
performance. So it is with the air-cooled

 contingent, represented by companies such as Scat
Enterprises, EMPI, TMI Products, and Coker Tires.
Somewhat surprising were the display vehicles used by
Heatshield Products, Mobil1, Toyo Tires and Kicker, and
a completely different means of attracting attention
employed by performance tuning company Hypertech.
Heatshield Products, maker of thermal and acoustic
barriers, had one of the stars of the Discovery Channel
TV series, Street Outlaws, as their guest, along with
his VW racer. Jeff Bonnett, known as AZN, is the
sidekick to Farmtruck, the series’ lead character.
Talking smack while leaving Farmtruck to back it up
on the track, lately AZN wanted to drive, hence a
’66 VW Sedan called ‘The Dung Beetle’, due to its
appearance. Looks can be deceiving, and the Bug
was built with help from Rancho Performance,

Oklahoma City claims to have
America’s fastest underground street
racers. Competition is keen with room
for only 10 drivers on “The List”, a
tradition in OKC underground street
racing. OKC racers will also team up to
take on all challengers to prove their city
has the fastest cars. It was with this in
mind, that the Dung Beetle was built.

and South Halls, a lowered Porsche 356 and

911 were both reportedly owned by Rotiform
Wheels’ founder, but this was information
we were not able to confirm. With no signage,
we were left to admire them, wonder who the
builder was, and to whom they belonged.
The star of the North Hall’s Car Audio
section was undoubtably George Sepulveda’s
’51 Split Window Beetle, built by Sic Chops.
The 2376CC turbo with Holley EFI in a
Mendeola chassis uses a Porsche 930 5-speed
transaxle, Fox coilovers, and Wilwood/
Porsche brakes. The Bug rolls on Colorado
Custom wheels and Yokohama tires, with
Axalta paint applied by Scott Laitinen. Inside,
Kicker’s Q-Class audio, Dakota Digital gauges
and a Ron Mangus interior complete a build.
Through years of stellar attractions in the
form of many different types of vehicles,
Kicker once again did not disappoint.

t’s been a while since we last checked in on Mark
Cherrington and his team at West Midland’s-based
Camper conversion specialists Starlight Campers.
They’ve been turning out some top quality Campers
of late and the last time we dropped in on them
business was booming and they’d just moved into a
larger unit in Dudley.

Hi Mark, what’s new?

We’ll we’ve moved again since last time we spoke.
We now occupy two units, so where we were had
3,000 square feet to play with, we now have a good
18,000 square feet and a few more staff. We basically

build big boys (and girls) toys here, and they take
up a lot of room, so we needed the extra space to
meet the demand.
So how many people have you got working for
you now?
We have four full-time and two part-time members
of staff working here now. Everyone has done an
apprenticeship in wood working or cabinet making,
which is absolutely key to what we do, which is
create and install bespoke Camping conversions for
Splits, Bays, Type 25s, T4s, ‘5s and T6s. Plus other
makes, like Citroen Mercedes, Ford and Nissan.
How many conversions are you turning out at
the moment?
It’s working out on average to be two to three a
month, but it depends on the sort of conversions

the smaller day jobs that come in, like installing
Propex heaters, fitting hook ups and so on.

You’re happy to work on anything aren’t you?

It’s a 50-50 split between old and new stuff. Some
months the workshop is full of Splits and Bays,
and at other times we have more T5s in. It’s always
different, which keeps it fresh for us.

We’ve seen you at a number of shows lately, too.

We normally trade at five or so a year. We don’t
like forcing ourselves down peoples throats. Quite
often, we’ll talk to someone about a conversion and
then we won’t hear back from them for 12 months.
They come back once all the body and paint has
been done on their Bus.

Plus there’s your show vehicles

We like building interesting stuff that shows off what
we can do. You featured our Type 25 a number
of years back, and my yellow 15-window Brazilian
Split. In the November issue you ran a feature on
staff member Chris Kinsella’s white Type 25 so we’re
always working on our stuff, too. We’re currently

Craftsmen and take what we do seriously. These are
big purchases so they have to be done correctly.

Customer satisfaction is important to you?

Totally. And customer care. A huge amount of
our work comes about via word of mouth and we
typically have a two to three month waiting list for
the larger jobs. We encourage customers to come
in and see what we do and how we work. We’re
craftsmen, not assemblers. I want people to leave
here knowing that what they’re getting is good
quality work, built by hand and fitted correctly. We
have a nice reception room now where people can
come in, have a coffee and talk through all of their
requirements with us.

You’ve also started offering Campers for hire

Yes we have. With newer Buses, you know, T5s and
modern water-cooled conversions. It’s a great way
for potential customers to have an extended try
before they buy and experience our interiors in the
real world. It also helps you think about what you
actually want and need in a conversion. How many
of you are going to sleep in it, how often, do you
need a full-width bed. That sort of stuff.

So, Ghia. Despite a history stretching back almost
to the start of the 20th century, this Turin carrozzeria
and design house is best-known for two things; its
Volkswagen/Karmann collaborations, and being a
nice badge stuck on posh Fords. Obviously, it’s the
former that most concerns us here, but don’t worry,
any Fiesta 1.1 Ghia fans - we’ll also look at how the
Blue Oval absorbed the Italian firm until it was little
more than just a high spec trim level.
The Ghia story properly begins with the birth
of Giacinto Ghia on September 18, 1887 in
Turin. When he was old enough to work, he was
apprenticed to a horse-drawn carriage builder. But
his interests leaned much more towards four wheels
than four legs, so he soon changed direction
and became a mechanic instead. By 1915 he’d
progressed to the role of test driver with the now
largely forgotten companies of Rapid and Diatto,
but a serious accident broke both his legs and
ended that particular adventure. Fortunately, he
was able to tap into his earlier apprenticeship
skills and a year later, he co-founded a vehicle
coachbuilding concern instead, Carrozzeria
Ghia and Gariglio. The firm soon became very
successful, specialising in aluminium-bodied
sports cars using a variety of European

chassis, although being a Turinese firm, Fiats, Alfa
Romeos and Lancias featured prominently. All was
going swimmingly until World War Two - in 1943,
the Turin factory was destroyed in air raid and the
shattered Giacinto died of a heart attack while
supervising its rebuilding the following year.
The company passed to his friend, Felice Mario
Boano, along with his business partner Giorgio
Alberti. Everything carried on much as before,
although an important appointment was Luigi
‘Gigi’ Segre as its chief engineer and principle
designer. However, in 1953, he and Felice fell out;
the latter threw his toys out of the pram and went
off to found yet another Italian coachbuilding firm.
That left Luigi to take over Ghia completely. Keen
to expand his new acquisition, he started looking
for work beyond the borders of Italy. Chrysler in
the USA was a significant customer, but even more
crucial was Volkswagen.
Luigi is the man credited with creating the
Karmann Ghia, although this is a little bit of a grey
area. For Volkswagen’s Beetle-based sports car
bore a distinct resemblance to Chrysler’s earlier
Coupe D’Elegance, especially from the bulkhead
back. That had been designed by American Virgil

Luigi Segre died in 1963, which severed the link
with Chrysler. By 1967, Ghia was in the hands of
Argentinian Alejandro de Tomaso, who used Ford
components for his sports cars. That put Ghia back
on Ford’s radar again, and in 1969, an agreement
was made for Ghia to build prototypes and show

would have to stop doing work for anybody else.
One final VW undertaking managed to escape
before this happened; the Karmann Ghia Touring
Coupe (TC). This time, the designer was the
celebrated Giorgetto Giugiaro, commissioned
by the Brazilian arm of Volkswagen to rework
the Type 14 as a 2+2 coupe, albeit with the Type

Europe fared a little better with 1974’s Granada

3’s 1.6-litre engine. Given some of Giorgetto’s
later striking designs - such as the Lotus Esprit,
DeLorean, original Golf and Scirocco and, um, Fiat
Panda - the TC, either in two-door coupe form or
unusual five-door estate variant, was hardly one of
his masterpieces. Just 18,119 were manufactured
between 1970 and 1976… although it was only
available in South America.
That really marked the end of Ghia’s
independence. Ford purchased 84 per cent of
Ghia in 1970 and took over completely in 1973.
Volkswagen complained, claiming only it had the
exclusive rights to use the title on series production
cars. However, it lost the argument.
The company was renamed as Ghia Operations
and tasked with coming up with luxurious versions
of existing Fords, as well as creating concept cars to
wow motorshow crowds. For the USA, its opening
salvo was the universally derided Mustang II, but
Ghia. Its interior and exterior tweaks were courtesy
of the Blue Oval’s Italian acquisition.
The Ghia name gradually spread to the Capri,
Cortina and Escort and then onto the Fiesta (itself
developed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia), Sierra, Orion,
Scorpio, Mondeo and Focus, as well as other
models. It became Ford’s mark of distinction – if
you wanted wood and to be pampered with extras,
Ghia was the badge you plumped for.
In 1990, the Frankfurt Motor Show featured a
Karmann Coupe concept car, following in the wake
of the New Beetle. Its looks aped yet updated
those of the original KG, but one crucial thing
was missing; the Ghia name. It couldn’t be used
because, by then, Ghia was too firmly a part of
the Ford morass. And it was gradually getting
more submerged. The name started to
disappear even as a trim level during the
first decade of the 21st century because it
was considered old fashioned. The Fiesta
Ghia ceased to be in 2007, after almost 32
years. The final use of Ghia on a production
Ford came in 2010. Titanium is now how Ford
likes to label its plusher models. However, the
Ghia division is still around, in the background, for
special concept and project machines.
With Karmann now owned by VW, after it went
bankrupt in 2009, there’s every chance we may
eventually see more VWs bearing that moniker.
But Ghia? Well, unless Ford sells the name it’s
clung onto for 45 years, don’t bank on it…

06 Distributor checks
Remove the dizzy cap and check for cracks and
damaged electrodes. Give them a clean or swap for a new
cap. Same with the rotor arm. They’re a cheap consumable
so you should fit a new one with every service. Points can
become pitted or the gap can close up, and because they’re
so cheap it doesn’t make any sense not to replace them.
Gap the new ones using a feeler gauge. The correct contact-
breaker gap is 0.4mm (0.016in) and you should always replace
the condensor whilst servicing your distributor. Drop a tiny
amount of oil into the recess on top of the distributor shaft
and then you can fit the rotor arm and cap.
07 Plugs and leads
Leads can break down over time, so check yours and
ideally take the time to replace both them and the spark
plugs. Remove the leads one at a time so you don’t confuse
the orientation. Spark plugs should be cleaned or replaced
every 5,000 – 10,000 miles. Check the gaps before refitting
them as it should be 0.7mm (0.028in. Don’t over-tighten, half
a turn past hand tight is enough.

08 Valve clearances
If you’ve followed this how to in order you’ll need to
wait a day for this part as the engine needs to be stone cold
to set the tappets gap. Pop the rocker covers off and have a
rag to hand to catch any oil that dribbles out. Pop the dizzy
cap off and find the notch in the rim of the distributor body.
There is a notch on the crankshaft pulley (or three), which
are your top dead centre (TDC) timing marks. Use a 30mm
spanner on the bottom pulley to turn the engine until the
rotor arm is pointing at the notch on the dizzy and the TDC
line on the pulley is lined up with centre line of the crank
case halves. That’s number one cylinder firing at TDC. One
and two cylinders are on the right as you look at the engine
from behind, three and four on the left. Tappet gaps should
be 0.15mm (0.006in) and the feeler blade should just slide
between the tappet screw and valve with a hint of resistance.
To adjust, slacken the lock nut and screw in or out and then
retighten the nut. Turn the pulley 180 degrees anti-clockwise
and the engine is now firing on number two cylinder. Rotating
another 180 degrees has engine firing on number three
cylinder and another 180 has it on number four. Always use
new rocker cover gaskets when carrying out this job.
09 Adjust brakes
You may have drums front and rear or just on the back.
Jack the Bus up and secure on axle stands.
With the wheels off the ground spin the wheels by hand.
You want a hint of drag on drum brakes. VW recommends
adjusting every 6,000 miles and to do this you need to poke a
screwdriver in the hole in the drum and turn the star adjuster
until the desired result is achieved. Press the brake pedal to
center the shoe and check again. The handbrake should be
adjusted so it pulls up no more than five clicks.

There are five points that require lubing every 5,000
miles. These are the steering idler pin in the centre of the
beam and the four trailing arm bushes at the ends of each
torsion bar. Early Buses have king pins and they have grease
nipples that require lubing, too. Remove any dirt from the
nipples and use a grease gun filled with a good general
purpose or graphite type grease. Pump until fresh grease
oozes out of the seals and then wipe off the excess.

11 Gearbox
Again, no one really does this, but with the Bus sitting
level climb underneath and locate the filler/inspection plug
on the nearside side of the case. Remove it and poke your
finger inside. Correct oil level is when it is level with the brim
of the case. Any lower and you need to add some more, how
much depends on how much is in there. A squeezy bottle with
a long flexible spout makes this process a whole lot easier.
Whilst you’re down there take the opportunity to lubricate the
clutch cable and check for play in the foot pedal. It should be
10-25mm. Adjust if necessary.
14 And finally
Check the condition of components like windscreen
wipers and tires. Both wear over time and kippered blades
mean an MoT failure and reduced visibility, knackered or
incorrectly inflated tyres can cost you your life. Door locks,
hinges and things like sliding door runners require a quick
lube up every year so they don’t wear out prematurely and
need replacing. A few minutes spent here can save countless
pounds and hassle in the long run. Now go enjoy your VW.

and on heart, I’m just not sold on it.
Electric powered cars, that is. Don’t
get me wrong. I care about the
environment. I recycle my yoghurt pots, I don’t
litter and I’d be much happier if supermarkets
stopped using plastic packaging. But electric
cars? I’m really just not feeling it.
Even after writing the feature on this
months plug-in cover star, I’m still not entirely
sold on the technology, or the idea of it. And
I still want to know where all the power is
going to come from to recharge everybody’s
car if everyone has to drive an electric vehicle.
In the 1950s car manufacturers were
experimenting with gas turbines in cars as
replacements for internal combustion engines,
and I think having a jet engine in a car is
massively more exciting than any electric car
could ever hope to be. Sadly, that proved to be
a technological cul-de-sac.
However, there’s just no getting away from
the fact that driving a petrol powered vehicle
yourself will eventually become a thing of
the past. Petrol powered cars are bad for the
environment and the general consensus of the
world’s governments is it would be much safer
for everyone if we removed the human factor
and let machines do the driving for us.
Just think on that for a moment. One
day, there will be no petrol, or it will be too
expensive for the average person to afford,
and the next generation of motorists, won’t
even enjoy the thrill of driving themselves.
That doesn’t sound like an especially happy
future for anyone does it?
Fortunately, I’ll have given up driving, and
no doubt be long gone before that happens.
And, it’s great we have people investing in the
technology to keep our beloved classics on the
road a wee bit longer. Albeit, in a massively
altered form. Although, for me, half the charm
of driving an old VW is the clattery old air-
cooled engine. These weird old engines in
the boot fascinated me as a child, and now
I know why and how they were fitted in the
wrong end, I love them even more. Writing the
feature on the electric
Bay was interesting,
and I like the idea of
zero maintenance and
rapid acceleration, but
I’m truly glad I get to
enjoy my oil burner for James Peene,
