Learning and Leadership Standards for the Profession Development Project

EDCS 605 Literacy Coaching

Project

Synthesis of Standards
ILA Standard 6 discusses the literacy specialist’s ability to work with adults in both an

individual setting as well as in group settings. The literacy specialist is able to look at

instructional practices in a collaborative setting and determine whether or not they make sense.

Leadership is demonstrated as professional development is delivered. This standard goes hand

in hand with IDA Standard F as literacy specialists maintain trust (both the public as well as

colleagues) by providing accurate information and never misrepresent efficacy of interventions

or other instructional practices. The literacy specialist would avoid making unfounded claims

and would support and respect the confidentiality of learners. ILA Standard 6 continues to have

an element of collaboration not found in IDA Standard F.

As a literacy specialist, these standards require that I engage in reading current research

to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information to my colleagues. It would require that I

put my feelings regarding certain interventions (whether positive or negative) to the side so as

not to cloud my judgement when reading current articles regarding an interventions efficacy.

IDA Standard F would not allow me to convey any misleading information regarding literacy

instruction regardless of my personal feelings. I believe this could be most problematic for

literacy specialists in the presenting of data in trainings. It would be easy to find data that proves

your view point – but it is important to remain objective as research is conducted.

Summary of Artifact

Artifact #1 Professional Development Project

We worked to create a professional development plan that can be implemented on a

faculty level. The plan integrated elements of technology into classroom instruction. The

Facilitator Guides were included such that an educator would be able to pick up the guides,

read through the material and schedule, and be able to adequately provide the training.

Artifact #2 Literacy Coaching Project

The literacy coaching project (also seen in Section 5) was an opportunity to work

collaboratively with another teacher on an individual level to provide guidance and suggestions

based on personal experience in the classroom as well as to provide support.

Evidence of Application
When combined, artifacts 1 and 2 prove my ability to work with educators on both an

individual level as well as in a professional development setting. Both of the artifacts show my

ethical behavior within the profession (IDA Standard F) as my suggestions were aimed at taking

an objective look at her classroom and offer suggestions that were free of misrepresentations

and unfounded claims. All students discussed in a respectful and confidential manner.

Specifically the Professional Development Plan demonstrated my ability to take knowledge I

have and work with educators collaboratively as well as my facilitation skills. The script that we

created shows what is being presented to the educators, how they may respond, where to allow

time for conversation, etc. (ILA Standard 6).
