Students’ prior knowledge and experience:

 In Year 4, students convert between units of time (ACMMG085) identifying and
using the correct operation for converting units of time. They use 'am' and 'pm'
notation and solve simple time problems (ACMMG086), calculating the time
spent at school during a normal school day, calculating the time required to
travel between two locations and determining arrival time given departure time.

Teaching purpose:
 The purpose of these lessons is to engage students in a new experience in the
classroom this year, by using rotation activities to involve students in a
differentiated lesson.
 Each rotation includes a different aspect of learning ‘time’, these include
reading timetables, elapsed time and converting between 12 and 24 hour time.

Learning objectives: Assessment:

On completion of this lesson, students will be *Formative Assessment –
able to:
 Active participation
 Observation
 Work samples marked
1
1. Compare between 12 and 24 hour  Feedback ongoing
 Positive reinforcements
time

2. Read and interpret timetables

effectively

3. Evaluate elapsed time

Preparation and Resources:

 Elapsed time activities
 Reading timetables activities
 Converting time activities
 Teacher assessment sheet – “Mental Maths”

Catering for diversity:

Learning difficulties: Differentiated activities for level of student learning, peer
tutoring, answers supplied to check work and teacher assistance (Ms House and
Monique (EA) on Thursdays)
Extension students: Differentiated activities for level of student learning

Timin Learning experiences

g
Introduction:

Attention grabber – have boxes set out on desks.

Introduce structure and schedule of lesson.

2
Learning Activity:
 15 minutes at each station
 4 groups of 6, 1 group of 7.
 Students will be broken into groups of mixed abilities – each station
will have differentiated task cards at 3 levels. 3 stars (red card) being
the hardest, 2 stars (yellow card) being middle, and 1 star (blue card)
being the lowest/easiest.
 Teacher Assessment groups to work with me – Ms House to work
with low students.

Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to
the lesson objectives?)
 Checking students workbooks at the end of each lesson to ensure
they have understood the tasks in the boxes.
 Teacher Assessment – this will allow me to see which students are
getting stronger at converting 24 hour time.
