How to Use Revit MEP to Preform Load Calculations on your Building

Abstract- This document will provide step by step directions on how to use Revit MEP to perform fast and accurate
load calculations.

1. Go to the Analyze Tab and select “spaces.” This will activate the space tool.

2. Place a Space in each of your rooms. Note: After creating the first space, select that space and
change its name. ie. Classroom1. When you place your next room it will be named Classroom2.
3. The Next step is to set up the properties of the Spaces. To do this select a space and edit the
following information; electrical loads, and under “energy analysis” edit, Space type,
construction type, people, and electrical loads.

4. Space tab looks like this. Just pick the closest option available.

5. The Construction type looks like this. Select the construction type for each element and save
this as a type. It can then be applied to all the other spaces without editing each individual
element again.
6. The people tab looks like this. Select the number of people that will be in the space.

7. The electrical load looks like this. Collaborate with your lighting designer or reference the
ASHRAE standard 90.1
8. Now that you have applied properties to each space it is time to run the calculations. Click on
the Heating and Cooling loads button. This will open this window.

9. Here you will have to edit this information.

Note: The construction type should match the construction type that was specified in the space
properties.
10. Next hit calculate.

Note:A good check to make sure your calcs are accurate is that the cooling BTU/FT2 should be
around 20. This will depend on the type of space however. My building was an elemetrey
school. It will be different for say a Lab facility .
