WELCOME On behalf of Cricket Australia, I welcome all athletes, parents and
families to this year’s Under 19 National Championships.
Cricket Australia’s Underage National Championships are an integral
part of the Australian Cricket Pathway, and continue to provide
important development opportunities for our emerging stars.
These championships have been the largest contributor of talent to
the men’s national team since their establishment, and have helped
the likes of Australian captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David
Warner rise from young guns to world beaters.
Two players - Victoria’s Will Pucovski and Western Australia’s
Cameron Green - went on to play JLT Sheffield Shield cricket last
summer after starring at the most recent edition of the championships,
which shows that the next level is not all that far away.
To all of our players, this is an exciting phase of your sporting journey
and I encourage you to embrace this experience.
This year’s tournament carries added anticipation, with an Australian
Under 19 side to be selected to play at the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket
World Cup.
Enjoy the challenge of testing yourselves against the best from across
the country, and the opportunity to play with your teammates and
create memories that will last throughout your cricketing careers
and beyond.
Good luck to all!

Cricket Tasmania is thrilled to be hosting the U19
National Championships this season.
Having Australia’s best young talent participating
in the state over the fortnight of the Championships
will be one of the highlights of the 2017/18 season
for Tasmanian Cricket.
This will be the twelfth Championships we have
hosted in the past eleven seasons, a terrific vote
of confidence in the experience of our host clubs
and ground authorities to stage major national
tournaments.
Venues throughout Greater Hobart and Launceston
will host Championship matches, which is an exciting
expansion to include grounds and clubs in Northern
Tasmania in the event.
I would like to thank the volunteers from our host
clubs for their contribution to hosting the event, and
all ground authorities for their ongoing outstanding
support preparing quality pitches and grounds.
The Championship is a key component of the talent
pathway and I wish all participants well, and look
forward to seeing which players from this event
become future stars of Australian Cricket.

THE W WADE
MAT
Over the past 10 years, Matthew Wade’s cricketing journey has taken him from
Tasmania to Victoria, and right around the world. The 29-year-old has returned to
Tasmania this summer as one of Australia’s leading wicketkeeper-batsmen, having
represented his country more than 140 times across all three formats of the game.

What’s it like being a professional think. I think I played four years of Under 17s and

6
What are your memories of
receiving your Baggy Green?
I was lucky enough to play the West Indies
in Barbados which is a terrific place to play.
Ricky Ponting presented my Baggy Green
which was even better. I grew up in Tassie
watching ‘Punter’ and he’d been the favourite son
of Tasmanian cricket for a very long time, so it was
a pretty special moment to get my Baggy Green
presented by arguably one of the best players
that’s ever played the game for Australia.

What are the highlights of your cricketing career

- do you have a favourite moment?
I’ve been lucky enough to play a few grand finals
and win a few premierships. I won two when I was
really young with Clarence, and I was lucky enough
to win four Sheffield Shields with Victoria. They’re all
special moments when you’re winning titles with your
mates and you work hard to get there, to get to the
end of the year and win championships. Probably the
most special moment I have playing for Australia is the
first Test we played in India recently, that’s probably
the greatest on-field game I’ve been involved with.
To go over there with a young team and do what we
did in the first Test match and beat India was one of
the best feelings I’ve had playing for Australia.

What would be your advice to this year’s Under 19

cricketers who aspire to follow in your footsteps?
You’ve got to enjoy it - it’s pretty clichéd and everyone
says it, but it’s hard to do though at times. It’s something
I probably didn’t realise when I was a young player,
there’s going to be days that don’t go your way. One
of the hardest things as a professional cricketer or a
young cricketer is trying to find a way to move forward
straight away, so the greatest advice I would give to
young cricketers is to enjoy your teammates success
even if you have a bad day, because your day
is just around the corner.
It’s not the end of the
world if it doesn’t go your
way - you’ll get another
opportunity in this game.
ACT/NSW Country were so
close to championship glory
last summer, and will be out to go
that one step further in Tasmania.
Leading the side will be talented top-order
batsman Jason Sangha, who represented the
CA XI at last year’s championships and is fresh
from two tour matches against England ahead of
the upcoming Ashes Series.

Sangha will have a strong side at his disposal, including

speedster Jason Ralston and swing bowler Iain Carlisle.

Keeper-batsman Matthew Gilkes will also be a key player

with bat in hand if his side is to challenge for the title again.

Selected from the best
talent at the Under 17 National
Championships, the Cricket
Australia XI will be looking to cause a
few upsets against their older opponents.
There’s no shortage of talent in the young side, with
the batting line-up to include emerging Victorian stars
Patrick Rowe and Mackenzie Harvey, plus player of the
Under 17 Championships, South Australia’s Kyle Brazell.

Queensland fast bowler Matthew Willans will be a threat with

the new ball, with spin bowling all-rounders Josh Hoffmann,
Oliver Davies and Todd Murphy giving the team plenty of depth.

NSW Metro stumbled at the
semi-final stages last year,

of going all the way.
Classy all-rounder Param Uppal takes the
captaincy in a side which bats deep into the

Uppal, alongside openers Ryan Hackney and Jack

the inventive Austin Waugh and keeper Baxter Holt
among some quality middle order players.
Aggressive fast bowler Ryan Hadley will spearhead the

Key to the team’s hopes of winning

COUNTRY

Victoria Country will be hoping

another successful tournament is
on the cards, after reaching the
semi-final stage last year.
That tournament included bragging rights
against their Metro rivals, with an impressive
qualifying final victory.

Tasked with leading the team this year is impressive top-

order batsman Tom Rogers. Spin bowling all-rounder Brad
Melville will have an important role to play for the Country side,
as will pace bowler Wilson McGillivray, while Thomas Jackson
and Mitchell Davey step up from this year’s Under 17 side.

Reaching the business end of

the competition will be the target
for a talented Victoria Metro side
this campaign.
Despite Will Pucovski’s record-breaking campaign
with the bat last summer, the Metro side missed out
on the final four and will have a point to prove.
Will Sutherland, who debuted for Victoria at the JLT
One-Day Cup, will captain the side and be an important
player with bat and ball, as will fellow all-rounder Jonathan
Merlo. Consistent left-hander Ed Newman will feature in the
top-order, while the speedy Zak Evans will be keen to make
a mark with the new ball in hand.

Western Australia returning with
a strong squad and with every
chance of going back-to-back.
Coach Stewart Walters and captain
Aaron Hardie again unite, for a shot at a
second consecutive Under 19 crown.
Fast-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green was
player of the final in 2016-17, before bursting onto the
domestic scene with some impressive JLT Sheffield
Shield performances, including a five-wicket haul in his
maiden innings. Green and fellow all-rounders Hardie,
Bradley Hope and Matthew Spoors are all back in yellow,
