I. INTRODUCTION
This program is designed to provide less-motivated students with the opportunity to
enhance their English through a brief performance piece. Although the students have
been assigned “The Right Thing to Do” by Martyn Ford, I’ve been told that since they
are part of the schools MPV (vocational) program, many will not complete it for
homework, and those who do will have difficulty grasping the content. Thus, this camp
will not only offer a platform for students to showcase their English-learning and creative
abilities, but will also require each to take responsibility for their assigned role and
complete the task at hand.

II. RATIONALE
While some of the students are able to speak and understand a little English, the majority
still struggle with pronunciation, intonation, grammar, punctuation, and most of all,
confidence speaking out loud. As such, it is believed that by offering an opportunity for
the students to work together in a less-formal setting, they will feel more at ease and less
anxious about making mistakes. Furthermore, since the play we will be performing is a
required assignment that very few, if any are likely to complete, the students will not only
be presented with the opportunity improve their English/homework grade, but will also
be held accountable for their individual contribution, thus fostering a sense of
responsibility. It is also believed that since the participating classes are all male and the
play contains female characters, there will be a comedic/improvisational element attached
to the performance, further highlighting cross-cultural communication by bringing
elements of American satire/parody into their environment.

III. OBJECTIVES
3.1 Students will be able to complete an assigned play, “The Right Thing to Do,” with the
purpose of performing it.
3.2Students will be able to read through the play as a class, alternating between assigned
roles (audition).
3.3 Students will be able to ask questions pertaining to any words/phrases they are unfamiliar
with.
3.4 Students will be able to recognize/perform variations in tone/reaction based on
punctuation/situation being described.
3.5 Students will be able to rehearse their assigned roles in character with the overall purpose
of performing.
3.6. Students will be able to perform other assigned duties such as set and costume design,
script revisions, and playing the roles of “extras.”
3.7 Students will be able to participate in cross-cultural exchange through gaining a better
understanding of American satire/parody.

IV. PARTICIPANTS
Teacher Azira Aziz and ETA Conor Murtagh will select approximately 15 students (7
named characters, 8 extras) to participate in the performance, and 15 more to assist in
set/costume design, and script revisions. Both teachers will supervise/assist in all facets
of production. Confirmation or rejection of the participant list will be left to the
discretion of Azira Aziz.
