II. RATIONALE
While some of the students are able to speak and understand a little English, the majority
still struggle with pronunciation, intonation, grammar, punctuation, and most of all,
confidence speaking out loud. As such, it is believed that by offering an opportunity for
the students to work together in a less-formal setting, they will feel more at ease and less
anxious about making mistakes. Furthermore, since the play we will be performing is a
required assignment that very few, if any are likely to complete, the students will not only
be presented with the opportunity improve their English/homework grade, but will also
be held accountable for their individual contribution, thus fostering a sense of
responsibility. It is also believed that since the participating classes are all male and the
play contains female characters, there will be a comedic/improvisational element attached
to the performance, further highlighting cross-cultural communication by bringing
elements of American satire/parody into their environment.
III. OBJECTIVES
3.1 Students will be able to complete an assigned play, “The Right Thing to Do,” with the
purpose of performing it.
3.2Students will be able to read through the play as a class, alternating between assigned
roles (audition).
3.3 Students will be able to ask questions pertaining to any words/phrases they are unfamiliar
with.
3.4 Students will be able to recognize/perform variations in tone/reaction based on
punctuation/situation being described.
3.5 Students will be able to rehearse their assigned roles in character with the overall purpose
of performing.
3.6. Students will be able to perform other assigned duties such as set and costume design,
script revisions, and playing the roles of “extras.”
3.7 Students will be able to participate in cross-cultural exchange through gaining a better
understanding of American satire/parody.
IV. PARTICIPANTS
Teacher Azira Aziz and ETA Conor Murtagh will select approximately 15 students (7
named characters, 8 extras) to participate in the performance, and 15 more to assist in
set/costume design, and script revisions. Both teachers will supervise/assist in all facets
of production. Confirmation or rejection of the participant list will be left to the
discretion of Azira Aziz.
VIII. DETAILS
8.1 This program will involve a lot of direction and peer encouragement, with the hope
that the students are able to work collaboratively in order build confidence in
speaking/performing in English.
8.2 Students are assigned roles based upon their skill, displayed interest, maturity, and
ability to follow through and complete an assigned task.
8.3To the best of our ability, this program will be run according to the schedule outlined
in section seven, though it is subject to change as necessary.
IX. CONCLUSION
This program will have a positive impact on the Form 4/ Form 4 MPV students of SMK
Hosba by helping them confidently communicate and express their ideas and opinions in
English. In addition, this program will provide the same students with the opportunity to
interact with and get to know ETA Conor better, as well as share in aspects of American
culture/entertainment.
