THE WRITING PROCESS

In today’s ever changing writing world we view a constant process. This process conforms to every
form of writing whether it is journalizing, in-field reporting, free-lance, or business communications. It
is known as the 3 step writing process. Each step embodies certain characteristics which form to make
any type of communication, in any medium, effective.

 Our first step, which some would argue is the most important step, consists of nothing but
planning. It is very important to know what message you want to get a cross, and whom you
want your message to be directed toward. It is very critical that you know exactly what message
you are trying to send, either inform, persuade, or collaborate. After you know what message you
are trying to get a cross, you must know the audience you are trying to reach. Without getting
your message to the right audience, your message becomes ineffective, and pointless. Then
comes gathering your information and deciding how you want the information in your message
to be relayed. Your medium can be oral, written, visual, electronic, or any combination of the
both to successfully convey your message. To finish the first step, you need to organize and re-
organize all your information, till it is in the correct order to be most effective.

 Our second step begins with the actual writing of our message. It is imperative the language of
the message is polite, positive, and unbiased. The vocabulary must convey an appropriate voice
that sets the tone of the message. Great writers always seem to give a one-on-one personal tone
that their audience can relate with, and this is no accident.

 The third step is completing the message. Completing the message consists of reviewing and
making any changes to the previous two steps to enhance the clarity for our audience.

By neglecting any of these steps, in any form of writing, usually results in an ineffective message. We
see that our 3-step writing process is not all just writing, but a great deal of preparation and analysis
which makes our message effective.
