Four decades and 10 editions in print is evidence of the

success of K J Lee’s Essential Otolaryngology Head
and Neck Surgery. First published in 1973, the book
has improved with each subsequent edition.
It is a review book and does not replace your core
textbook. A lot of information is crammed into 46
chapters, written by a multidisciplinary team of
authors. This is both its strength and weakness, as the
style and content varies throughout the book. As
acknowledged in the preface, some common conditions
(e.g. epistaxis and nasal polyposis) are not covered
comprehensively. However, to cover the whole sylla-
bus in just one review book would not be feasible.
The extensive text is complemented by excellent draw-
ings, clinical photographs and tables. Some chapters
also offer questions to test your knowledge and
learning.
