21 Professional Center, 2025 E. Main Street (Shockoe Bottom), Suite
214, Richmond, VA 23223; (804) 297-6316.
Our newspaper is an independently owned, monthly (complimentary)
GOOD NEWSpaper, which initially launched in September 2014 by
Deone “Flavor” McWilliams, CEO, who at the time had only $22.00
after leaving Corporate America… LEAP OF FAITH! Northside Vibes
launches on the 1st Friday of each month (occasional delays due to holi-
days and inclement weather). To-date, we have over 63,000 readers lo-
cally and worldwide, including Southeast Asia and Rome, Italy! To
view our electronic version, visit www.scribd.com (search Northside
Vibes) and website: www.northsidevibes.org.
Mission: From the outset, Deone envisioned Northside Vibes becoming
a unique publication that would be an integral part of many communi-
ties—a publication for everyone to enjoy! She passionately creates in-
formative newspapers that people identify with, take pride in, and serve
to bridge the different segments of “all” communities. As Flavor News
is unable to publish everyone’s story, our intentions are always good.
For information regarding affordable ad rates, please send an email to

expressed in Northside Vibes are not necessarily representative of the views
held by the editorial staff. No part of this publication may be reproduced or

The Curly Piece by Maddie Chapman

The summer months have always brought me the most joy and comfort
when I was growing up because that meant school was out, the pool was
open, and no bedtime regardless of any reasoning my parents might
have. As adulthood really starts to sink in to my life, I’ve been met with
the devastating discovery that summer is no longer a three-month vaca-
tion after school ends. It is a three-month long space and time continu-
um in which bills, deadlines, work, and summer classes still exist in un-
attainably warm climates. No more righteous family vacations or week-
ends at my friends’ beach house because… well… I couldn’t request off
from work. However, despite the soul-crushing reality of my TO DO
lists not getting any shorter, I mustn’t forget that it IS summertime!
There is no need to make chores and responsibilities a drag if the sun is
shining, right??? Pick up some popsicles the next time you go to the su-
permarket and make sure to eat one outside while you read one day.
Wear a big bright yellow sunhat because the sun is out (duh?). To this
day, on the occasion that I’m off, I will strive to knock out errands early
and head out for a relaxing day… sitting in the sand at Pipeline trail or
sunbathing on the rocks at Texas Beach (something about the impending
rays of sunshine really bring out the urge to self-reflect on all aspects of
my life—whether it be acknowledging all that I am thankful for-- or af-
firming all the love I graciously receive and reciprocate from loved
ones). Self-reflection can go a long way; and I do believe it is healthy
for our minds to understand things we might’ve been wrong for or oc-
currences in which we’ve felt completely whole. The summertime
should be as stress-free as possible—if manageable—and taking time to
yourself on an off day is an excellent way to start!

HAVING THAT DIFFICULT CONVERSATION

GETTING YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER
By Deborah Bowser R.N., B.A., M.P.S.
There is a topic most families DON’T discuss—and that is—what plans
have been made for our passing. Death can be sudden or a slow process.
Either way, we should have our affairs in order. Does your family know
what your wishes are? Where are your important documents: birth
certificate, marriage/divorce certificate, advance directive, insurance
policies, and other related documents?
There are two important legal documents that should be considered: Dura-

mation and answer many questions you may have. 1. RESEARCH. If you haven’t already started researching, decide
on a starting point to gather more information. Will you research
online? Speak to some friends who have adopted. Attend a free
informational meeting at your local adoption agency or a combina-
tion of all of these. Just start with one and go for it! You’re not
committing to anything at this point. You’re just learning more to
see if this is the “right fit” for you and your family.
2. READ (or listen to) BOOKS ABOUT ADOPTION. This is a
great way to learn more and prepare for the journey. These books
can include practical how-to’s or books of encouragement. Just
start with whatever speaks to you. There is no right or wrong here.

that lured the adventurous traveler. But the illumination that would soon

Public Housing Basketball League

Receives Funding!
SEE PHOTO ON PAGE 6
A nonprofit basketball league for young adults living in high crime
neighborhoods has received $50,000 in funding from the Walmart
Foundation and Virginia Local Initiatives Support Corp. (LISC). The
funding will enable the league to continue throughout the summer.
“RVA League for Safer Streets has had tremendous success in building
positive relationships between residents and police and increasing
neighborhood safety,” said Candice Streett, executive director of Vir-
ginia LISC. “This funding also helps ensure that these young men have
opportunities to connect with community resources off the basketball
court.”
The award is part of a $481,000 Walmart Foundation grant for safety
initiatives at LISC sites across the country. Virginia LISC was one of DON EDWARDS
