 essence of Goa
Goa has a rich and unique history which is expressed in the character of it’s buildings. Large pithched roof overhangs protect the soft laterite facade of residential buildings from the wind, rain and sun of the Goan climate. But more than this, the overhangs,
supported on columns create an in between space that is neither indoor nor out. It is a space that can be lived in, yet it is part of the landscape. This connection with the outdoors is the essence of our approach to a landscape oriented architecture.

A large Banyan tree anchors the site and is focal point of the arrival. Solid laterite walls and pitched terracotta tile roofs create solid outer skin to the building that contrast with the greenery but sit harmoniously in the context. The solidity provides privacy
and security from the street, but also builds a sense of anticipation. On entry, it is aparent that the building is not as solid as it first appeared. Walls are pulled apart from the roof supporting structure, allowing the outside to penitrate in to the space.

 outdoors at heart
The heart of the dwelling is open to sky, allowing light and air into the surrounding living spaces. Planting and water are used to divide spaces rather than traditional bricks and mortar. Greenery is infused into traditionally enclosed spaces.

 living in the landscape
Each space has a visual connection with the outdoors. Floor to ceiling glazing gives the sense of living in the landscape. Privacy is mainted in the dwelling through the use of slot windows and timber screens. Light penitrating spaces and casting shaddows
breathes life in to every part of the building and enhances textures and colours of the natural materials.

Moving through the site, the building disolves in to the landscape. The inside now becomes the outside. ‘Rooms’ are defined by lawn or water and it is the plants and the sky more than the constructed elements that form the roof and the walls.

 landscape
Moving through the site, the building disolves in to the landscape. The inside now becomes the outside. The farmhouse is enveloped in a lush and productive landscape. The flavours of Goa are brought to the door step. The Farmhouse is at the centre of a
kitchen garden. Harvesting from the garden gives the sense of being at one with the land and true sense of well being. Formality in the garden evokes memories of the plantation estate.

Exterior lighting provides a soft, natural ambience. Subtle pathway lights illuminate key circulation areas using downlighting, creating safe passage yet preserving the view of the Goan night sky. Important features such a large trees, feature walls and art-
work will be washed with uplights to create local focal points at night. Decorative lanterns will be used in outdoor living space to provide an intemate scale to the spaces.

 architectural lighting
Light interior finishes create a cool, spacious feel and allow the sun to indirectly penitrate all areas of the farmhouse. The solidity and contrasting transparency of the building will be expressed by placing ephasis on lighting the interior spaces, rather than
the facade of the building. Decorative lights, such as pendant lights can be used throughout to help the spacious, higher internal volumes feel more intemate at night.
