Information pertaining to particular dangers for man and environment:
Strong skin absorption as main danger of phenol poisoning at the workplace with paralysis of the central
nervous system (with lethal consequences in severe cases) as well as liver and kidney damage. Ignitiable
mixtures with air may form during heating. The product has to be labelled due to the calculation procedure of
the "General Classification guideline for preparations of the EU" in the latest valid version.
R 23/24/25 Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed.
R 34 Causes burns.
R 48/20/21/22 Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure through inhalation, in
contact with skin and if swallowed.
R 68 Possible risk of irreversible effects.

4. First-aid measures
General information: Bring injured persons to the fresh air, lie comfortably and loosen tight clothing.
Remove wetted clothing immediately, thereby wear gloves for self-protection! In
the case of vomiting or danger of unconsciousness, lie and transport in stabilised
side position. Call a doctor to the site of the accident.
After inhalation: Feed fresh air. If breathing has stopped, apply artificial respiration immediately, if
possible with respiration bag. Immediately call a doctor to the site of the accident!
After skin contact: Remove wetted clothing, shoes and stocking immediately. Rinse affected parts of
the body continuously with polyethylene glycol (e.g. Lutrol) or with plenty of water,
as far as possible followed by washing with olive oil or edible oil. If large skin areas
have been wetted, immediately call a doctor to the site of the accident, otherwise
take the patient to a doctor immediately.
After eye contact: Rinse the eyes with open eyelids for 10 - 15 minutes with water. Then consult an
eye specialist immediately.
After swallowing: Wash mouth with water and drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. Always
consult a doctor immediately.
Information for the doctor:
Symptoms and dangers: No specific antidote therapy for phenol poisoning is known. Therefore it is
important to remove the phenol completely from the body surface and out of the body as quickly as possible,
and in the case of inhalation prophylactic treatment to prevent pulmonal oedema is of great importance.
Phenol causes strong caustic burns of the skin and mucous membranes due to its protein degenerating
action. The skin initially discolours white, later red. After initial pain, local anaesthesia appears. Absorptive
poisoning by large amounts of phenol is possible also through small affected skin regions and quickly leads
to paralysis of the central nervous system as well as strong depression of the body temperature. Inhaling
phenol vapours can lead to damage of the bronchial system and pulmonal oedema. Systemic damage to
kidneys, liver and heart as well as neuropsychiatric disturbances are produced.
Treatment: Thoroughly clean the wetted skin areas, if possible with polyethylene glycol (e.g. Lutrol). In the
case of eye contact, rinse copiously with water, in the case of burns rinse continuously with water as far as
possible and take to an eye specialist or eye clinic. In the case of inhalation, to prevent pulmonal oedemia,
initiate inhalative cortisone therapy as early as possible (e.g. every 10 minutes 5 strokes of a cortisone
containing aerosol dosing spray such as Auxiloson, Thomae); administer codeine against dry coughing. In
the case of commencing or manifested pulmonary oedemia, systemic administration of cortisone (e.g. Solu
Decortin 1000 or Fortecortin 100). Caution: A low symptom or symptom-free interval is possible. If
swallowed, gastric lavage after intubation, activated charcoal, saline laxative.
5. Fire-fighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media: Extinguishing powder, carbon dioxide (CO2), alcohol resistant foam or spray
water.
Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons: Direct water jet (danger of spreading).
Special exposure hazards arising from the substance or preparation itself, combustion products,
resulting gases: None.
Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Tightly closing chemical protection clothing with respirator
equipment independent of the ambient air is required for protection against pyrotic phenol vapours.

Additional information: Heating increases pressure with hazard of bursting and explosion. Cool
neighbouring packages and containers immediately with spray water and, if possible, remove them out of the
danger zone. Dispose of fire debris and contaminated fire fighting water in accordance with official
regulations. Collect contaminated fire fighting water separately. It must not enter the sewage system.

2. Behaviour in environmental systems
Mobility: On the basis of its solubility in water and assessment of the determined soil absorption coefficients
(KOC = 16.2 - 91.2; scale value 1-2; scale 0-5), accumulation of phenol in the soil is not expected.
Bioaccumulative potential: Phenol is not enriched significantly in organisms (bio-concentration factor: BCF
= 1.5 - 20; experimental values).
3. Ecotoxicity
Aquatic toxicity:
Species Toxicity Method
Algae Green algae (selenastrum capricornutum) 8d-EC50 = 7.5 mg/l OECD 201
Invertebrates Water flea (ceriodaphnia dubia) 48h-LC50 = 3.1 mg/l 3 breed test
Fish Rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss) 96h-LC50 = 5.0 mg/l semi-static
Behaviour in sewage plants:
3h-EC50 = 799 mg/l (communal activated sludge / OECD 209)
5min-EC50 = 18 mg/l (photobacterium phosphoreum / Microtox test)
General information:
Water hazard class 2 (German Regulation) (Self-assessment): hazardous for water. According to appendix 4
of VwVwS dated 17.05.1999 (German regulation). Do not allow product to reach ground water, water course
or sewage system. Must not reach sewage water or drainage ditch undiluted or unneutralized. Danger to
drinking water if even small quantities leak into the ground.
4. Further information on ecology
