Yendo a trabajar

When you think about it human behaviour is very interesting. Consider how we travel to the same
place of work, year after year, leaving home at the same time, taking the tube or catching a commuter
train at exactly the same time... and every single day we come across practically the same people...

Cuando piensas en ello, el comportamiento humano es muy interesante. Considera cómo viajamos
al mismo sitio a trabajar, año tras año, marchándonos de casa a la misma hora... y todos los días
nos cruzamos con prácticamente la misma gente...

How can anyone ever doubt that we are creatures of habit? When you have been making the same
journey for several weeks look at how you start to follow the same routine, sitting in the same seat on
the train every day, like all the other commuters who are heading to work.

¿Cómo puede alguien dudar jamás de que somos animales de hábitos? Cuando has estado
haciendo el mismo trayecto durante varias semanas, mira cómo empiezas a seguir la misma rutina,
sentándote en el mismo asiento en el tren cada día, igual que todos los otros viajeros que se dirigen
al trabajo.

When you see the same people everyday a certain complicity or unspoken understanding develops
between you.

Cuando ves la misma gente cada día, se desarrolla entre vosotros una cierta complicidad o
entendimiento tácito.

If, one day, someone isn't in their usual place you tend to assume that they have missed the train,
that they got up late or the alarm clock didn't go off... or maybe they have a doctor's appointment.

Si, un día, alguien no está en su sitio habitual tiendes a asumir que ha perdido el tren, que se ha
levantado tarde, o que el despertador no le ha sonado... o que quizá que tiene una cita con el
médico.

If there is no sign of them after three or four days you are inclined to think that they are unwell,
maybe they have caught the flu and are staying at home.

Si no hay ninguna señal de ellos después de tres o cuatro días, te inclinas a pensar que no se
encuentran bien, que quizás hayan cogido la gripe y estén en casa.

But when you haven't seen them for three or four weeks, you start to feel uneasy, to worry about that
person even though you have never addressed a single word to them. But you have shared the same
journey with them year after year.

Pero si no le has visto durante tres o cuatro semanas, empiezas a sentirte incómodo, a preocuparte
por esa persona, aunque nunca le hayas dirigido ni una sola palabra. Pero has compartido el mismo
trayecto con ellos año tras año.

You feel concerned that maybe they have been sacked. What a shame... and what with it being so
difficult to find a decent job nowadays.

Te preocupa que quizás haya sido despedida. Qué vergüenza... y con lo difícil que es encontrar un
trabajo decente hoy día.
And just when you are convinced that you will never see them again, there they are, getting on at the
same station, sitting in the same seat and baffled as to why you are so cheerful...you are even
smiling at them!

Y justo cuando estás convencido de que no le volverás a ver jamás, ahí está, subiéndose en la
misma estación, sentándose en el mismo asiento, y desconcertados a ver que tú estás tan alegre...
¡incluso les estás sonriendo!

And yet the two of you have never exchanged a word. "That's a relief", you think, "They've still got
their job".

Y eso que ninguno de los dos habéis intercambiado jamás una palabra. "Qué alivio", piensas, "sigue
teniendo su trabajo".

Although, on second thoughts maybe they are looking for work and on their way to an interview.
"Good Luck!" you say to yourself.

Aunque, pensándolo bien, tal vez esté buscando trabajo y vaya de camino a una entrevista. "¡Buena
suerte!" dices para ti mismo.
