FS 1: THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT

AND ENVIRONMENT

Field Study 1

Observation is the main point of this study. The purpose of

observation is to provide opportunity for us to relate the theory to
actual practice. There are five things to remember with regards to an
effective observation. First, know and understand what exactly to
observe. Next, study the observation guides, listen to the field study
teacher and ask questions to be sure that all is clear. Third, make
sure we have pen and paper to jot down details. Then, separation of
facts from interpretations is needed. Lastly, accomplish the
checklists/forms as soon as possible to make the details stay fresh in
mind.

Field study 1 will help us to be competent in determining a

school environment that provides social, psychological and physical
environment supportive of learning. It contains six episodes. Episode
1 which is the School as a Learning Environment focused on
determining a school environment that provides social, psychological,
and physical environment supportive of learning.

Episode 2 is the learner’s characteristics and needs which

focused on differentiating the characteristics and needs of learners
from different developmental levels. Episode 3 is Classroom
Management Learning which focused on comprehensive in managing
time, space and resources to provide an environment which is
appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning. Episode 4 is
Individual Differences and Learner’s Interaction which focused on
differences in gender, racial, and religious backgrounds. Episode 5
focused on determining teaching approaches and techniques
considering the learner’s differences in level of abilities. Episode 6 is
Home-School Link which focused on identifying and describing the
influencing factors in the home environment that impact students’
learning.

I am taking my practicum in Paradise Farms National High

School. As I observed, the environment is conducive to learning. The
classrooms are enough for the number of students enrolled their. All
the students are comfortable with their own chairs and desks. Every
class, modules are given to the students for them to follow the
discussions. I also observed the differences of the students. My critic
teacher can handle those differences. She can make the classroom
interactive and enjoyable despite of the student’s different behavior
and attitudes.

FS 2: EXPERIENCING THE TEACHING-

LEARNING PROCESS

Field Study 2

In the course subject, Principles of Teaching, important points

were discussed. This field study helps us to connect teaching-learning
theories and principles with actual classroom practice. It can also
help to see how the principles are applied by the classroom teacher to
make the classroom and the process interactive and enjoyable.

There are eight objectives of the field study course 2. First is to

arrive at an experiential knowledge and understanding of the
principles of teaching and learning. Second is to reflect on the
application of the principles of teaching and learning for meaningful
and lasting learning. Third is to determine how the guiding principles
in lesson objective formulation are applied in the teaching-learning
process. Fourth is to acquire the skill in developing cognitive skill and
value lessons meaningfully and interestingly. Fourth, apply the
guiding principles in the selection of teaching strategies. Sixth is to
identify the teaching approach employed. Seventh is to trace the
logical development of a lesson. Last is to identify effective
questioning and reacting techniques.
There are three (3) episodes to this field study. Episode 1 is
Looking Through the Meaningful Learning Experiences will make us
identify the principles in teaching-learning activities, manuals and
other instructional materials and by the teacher to facilitate learning,
and reflect it through experience.
Episode 2 is the Learner’s Characteristics and Needs. Episode 3 is
Assisting A Teacher with a Teacher’s Toolbox.

When my critic teacher let me handle one of her classes, I

started to apply the teaching-learning theories and principles with
actual classroom practice. But at first, its difficult for me to make the
classroom and the teaching-learning process interactive and
enjoyable.

I also observed how my critic teacher applies the principles of

teaching through the activities she gives to her students. She can
meet the learner’s characteristics and needs.

FS 3: TECHNOLOGY IN THE LEARNING

ENVIRONMENT

Field Study 3

Nowadays, technology is the main source of learning. This field

study course 3 will help us to develop and utilize appropriate
technology to facilitate learning. It aimed to select the teaching
materials that best suit the needs of the learners, apply the principles
of developing instructional materials and develop and utilize
instructional materials appropriate to a chosen subject area.
There are seven (7) episodes in this field study. Episode 1,
Name and Tell, focused on the school’s learning resources. This will
help to identify and classify resources that facilitate teaching and
learning processes. Episode 2, My Insight and Boardwork, focused on
Bulletin Board Displays. It appraises the effectiveness of displays as
learning resources.

Episode 3, See and Say, focused on the utilization of Teaching

Aids. It determines the appropriateness of teaching aids to learning
tasks. Episode 4, Aid Bank, focused on a teaching aid bank. It
prepares instructional materials that are appropriate to the learning
content.

Episode 5, Paper works, focused on classroom handouts. It

prepares instructional materials that are appropriate to the learning
content. Episode 6, Slideshow Biz, focused on Slide presentation. It
develops and utilizes materials which involve students in meaningful
learning. It also recognizes strengths and weaknesses of slide
presentations in facilitating teaching-learning process. Episode 7, My
E-World, focused on On-Line Learning. It determines the
appropriateness of the internet resources to the learning tasks.

In Paradise Farms National High School, most of the teachers

are not yet using projector and powerpoint presentations in teachings.
But my critic teacher gives her students assignments in which
internet are needed. For example, they ask them to make a research
about the uses and functions of farming tools since it’s not included in
the module. Through that, my critic teacher can make the students
use the technology to learn.
FS 4: EXPLORING THE CURRICULUM

Field Study 4

Curriculum is the aggregate of courses of study given in a

school, college, university. This field study course 4 has eight (8)
episodes. The first episode looks deeper into the concepts, nature
and purposes of the curriculum. This study focused on the concepts,
nature and purposes of the curriculum and how these are translated
into the school community.

Episode 2, What’s the Curriculum Made Of?, focused on the

components of the curriculum and curricular approaches. Episode 3,
What’s New in Teaching and Learning, focused on the teaching and
learning process in curriculum. Episode 4, Let’s Craft the Curriculum,
focused on the different curriculum design mode.

Episode 5, What’s the Basic of the Curriculum?, focused on the

dimensions of curriculum design. One should examine a curriculum,
identify the dimensions of the curriculum design, and give some
situation samples of each dimension. Episode 6, Tell Me Your
Features, focused on the six features of curriculum.

Episode 7, The Wh— of the Curriculum, focused on the

concepts, nature and purposes of the curriculum and how these are
translated into the school community. One should identify the various
implementations of the curriculum, state the ole of technology in
delivering the curriculum, and explain the different ways of assessing
the curriculum. Episode 8, What’s New in the Curriculum?, focused on
curricular issues and concerns. One should visit DepEd or interview
school administrators on various curricular issues and concerns,
interview faculty members on the merits and demerits of these
innovations, and write insights/ reflections on these innovations.

Today, K+12 is implemented. So, the curriculum changed. My

critic teacher, Mrs. Vilma Fajilagot, explained and introduced me the
world of K+12. She advised me that understanding the curriculum
will help me to teach the students effectively.
FS 5: LEARNING ASSESSMENT
STRATEGIES

Field Study 5

For us to be able to know the level of knowledge of students

and to know how much they learned from you, an assessment is
needed. Field study course 5 has 6 episodes.

Episode 1, Guiding Principles in the Assessment of Learning,

focused on the application of the principles of assessment. To
accomplish this episode, first, review the principles of learning on pp.
114-122 of Principles of Teaching, 2007 by Corpuz, B. and G.
Salandaan and Assessment of Learning 2, 2007 Santos, Rosita, pp. 7-
22. Second, observe three (3) different classes and interview the
teacher. Third, identify evidence of applications of the principles of
assessment of learning. Fourth, write down the reflections based on
experience. This episode includes observation sheet and analysis
sheet.

Episode 2, Using Appropriate Assessment Tools, focused on

assessment tools and strategies. There are few steps to do. Episode
3, On Content Validity of Tests, focused on
the connection between Table of Specifications and test validity and
constructing test with content validity. To do this, first, review the
Development of Assessment Tools in Assessment of Learning 1 by
Santos, Rosita, pp. 14-22 and refer to other references on Assessment
of Learning. Second, interview the teacher on steps they take to
ensure content validity of their tests. Third, secure copies of a written
quiz/test and a lesson plan from the teacher upon which the quiz/test
is based and a copy of Table of Specification. Fourth, answer given
questions for analysis. Fifth, reflect on observations.
Episode 4, On Scoring Rubrics, focused on Types of Scoring
Rubrics. Episode 5, On Portfolios, focused on the types of Learner’s
portfolios. Episode 6, Scoring, Grading, Communicating Results,
focused on scoring items, computing grades and communicating
results to parents.

My critic teacher gave quizzes next day after the day of

discussions. She always makes sure that the test will make the
students think and apply the learning they gained. In getting the
result of the quiz, she asks the students who got the highest scores.
For the lowest scores, she will set remedial or other activities to help
them understand the lesson and got high score in their quiz next
time.

FS 6: ON BECOMING A TEACHER

Field Study 6

To be an effective teacher, it is important to apply the

characteristics of a teacher as a person and as a professional. This
field study course 6 provides a wide range of opportunity of self-
reflection that will better prepare an individual to become a student
teacher. This field study aimed to describe the characteristics of a
teacher as a person, identify the characteristics that make up a
professional teacher in the classroom, in the community, and in the
world, document best practices of outstanding teachers, and clarify
one’s personal values, attitudes, and beliefs about teaching.

Episode 1, The Teacher As a Person, aimed to clarify values

about teaching, and articulate and demonstrate one’s personal
philosophy of teaching. It is important to be aware of the values
about teaching. Episode 2, The Teacher in the Classroom, aimed to
make an individual be competent in establishing routines and
procedures to make the physical environment conducive to learning.
Teacher as a good classroom manager can help to have a better
learning environment.

Episode 3 and 4 is The Teacher and the Community. Teacher is

the backbone of the educational system. He/she must be able to
make favorable impression in order to maintain good school-
community relationship. Episode 5, The Teacher as A Professional,
will make an individual to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the
rights, duties, and responsibilities of a professional teacher and their
impact on him/her as a future teacher. What to do first is to gather
information about the policies and guidelines concerning teachers,
implemented by the cooperating school. Next, interview the
principal/head teacher/the critic teacher about the implementation of
these policies and guidelines. Then, analyze the policies and
guidelines in the light of values and pertinent laws. Last, reflect on the
impact of all these to future life as a full-fledged professional teacher.

As I observed, I have seen how my critic teacher acts the role of

being a manager inside the classroom. She managed the class very
well to have a better environment that is conducive to learning. She
is also aware in the community. She keeps on reminding me that
before going to my class, I should look professional. The students
should see me as a professional teacher even I’m not. She keeps on
preparing me to become effective teacher.
