Oratorio for narrator, baritone, women’s chorus and small orchestra, on the
eponymous poem by Federico García Lorca. Composition: 30 March–8
May 1950. Commissioned by the Cercle Culturel du Conservatoire (Jean-
Etienne Marie). Dedication: ‘to Alain Bermat’. First performance: Paris,
Sorbonne (Richelieu Amphitheatre), 22 May 1950, by Bernard Cottret
(baritone), Mauricio Molho (narrator), and the Orchestre des Cadets du
Conservatoire, conducted by Georges Delerue.
