Multiple Intelligences- Ideas to Teach

Learning Map: Clothing Construction Class

Subject: Prepare to sew

Age: HS Sophomore
Generative Topic: Take time to do things right/ patience
Purpose: Students will be able to personally recreate the sewing process and use
this as an economical skill throughout their lives.

Understanding goals: Understand that the tedious tasks up front (like measuring
and cutting) help the sewing process to be easier, and the final product to
fit/function better.
Performance goals: Create variety of pieces that the students will use and enjoy in
the future. Develop the skills to continue the sewing process even after the class
ends.

Pre-Assessment: Ask about why measurements/ patterns could be important?

Discuss what body parts would be important to measure to be able to make certain
clothing items. This will get them thinking spatially.

MI Teaching Ideas:

Spatial- Sketch out 3 clothing designs of what you would like to sew according to
your measurements, then find a pattern at the store that is similar to one of those
designs you created.

Logical- Gather the body measurements from the students in the class and calculate
the average size. Determine the desired fit by surveying classmates and find how
commonly they choose to wear clothing “too tight” “too loose” or “just right”. Record
your findings in a table or chart.

Musical- Write and preform a song to explain how to thread our classroom sewing
machines.

Interpersonal- Work with a partner to take a video: this video will explain and show
the class how to take body measurements and record them. (assign each group a
few different body measurements to research and record)

Intrapersonal- Determine your body shape and decide what type of skirt would look
best on you. Decide on a cut, style, fabric and write out why you think it is so
comfortable and flattering on you.

Bodily- Kinesthetic- Use large ropes to show the class how the sewing machine’s tiny
needle connects a chain of thread on fabric. Use dance movements, sound effects,
props, and whatever else is needed to illustrate this large scale.

Naturalist- Decide on the best type of material to use for the following: 1. A formal
dress 2. A swimsuit 3. Drapery 4. Weekend lounge pants. Gather small samples from
the fabric store and explain why you would use it for each.

Linguistic- Write a creative 10+ lined poem about the parts of a sewing machine that
would help the class remember where each part goes and what it does. (give
students a list of parts, and a diagram)

Existential- Over this next month try to answer this topic: Why do we as a society
focus so much on fashion and clothing? Write your all thoughts and findings in a
separate notebook, include separate viewpoints.
