CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Thousands of aspiring civil engineers graduate every year in the Philippines. A bright

future can be seen ahead, said by many. However, civil engineering students are uncertain

whether they will land on a job after their training.

Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) produces an estimate of fifty civil engineering

graduates yearly. Furthermore, the results of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)

Civil Engineer Licensure Examination is satisfactory, leaving the Alma Mater ranking 20

(proffsg, 2017) in the top schools for civil engineering based on the results of the November

2017 board exam. A level II accredited college combined with an outstanding school ranking in

the region as credentials, the researchers’ interest was piqued regarding the career of its alumni.

The alumni are considered as the best evidence of a program’s effectiveness in terms of

employment and positions held. Moreover, they are a good source of feedback regarding the

program’s relevance in the current labor market (Orejana, et al., 2010).

CNSC Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) program focuses on Structural

Engineering for the curriculum’s technical electives, such as Earthquake Engineering, Rebar,

Prestressed Concrete Design, Bridge Engineering, and Professional Ethics. Hence, this study will

determine the relevance of technical electives on the job placement as perceived by its Alumni.

This endeavor will greatly aid the future civil engineering graduates to explore their career

choice, and the college of engineering to come up with a more efficient program for BSCE.
