Subject: Fuel Change-over procedure for Main Engine, Generator

Engine and Boiler

MAIN ENGINE & GENERATOR ENGINE(From HSFO to

LSMGO)

 Main engine and generator engine have common fuel oil line.
 Designated LSMGO(Sulphur Max 0.1%) tanks(Service and Storage Tanks) :- D.O
Service tank capacity- 25.3m 3 , D.O.Tank (P) – Cap. 100 m 3 , 3P Tank Cap.-
133.9 m ,3S tank Cap. – 458.5 m3 , LSMGO to be transferred to DO service tank
3

by DO transfer P/P(Auxiliary transfer P/P)

 Change-over of ME from HSFO to LSMGO to be done only at low load under 50-
55% ME loads.
 Required change over time from HFO(Max S-3.5%) to LSMGO(Max S-0.1%) for
main engine minimum 06 hours ( assuming 2.0 m 3 F.O. in pipes,heaters,filters
and mixing column) for Auxiliary engine(For on load A/E) Minimum 02 hours
(assuming 0.14m3 in the pipes from A/E F.O. inlet valves to A/E F.O. outlet valve,
for others A/E = Min 01 hrs as they are already on LSMGO. For boiler = Min 04hrs
as boiler were already flushed on LSMGO since Last stopping time.
 Upon receiving 09 hrs notice from Bridge, shut all steam tracing line
valves(538VSL,542VSL,091VSL,056VSL,004VSL,051VSL,032VSL,522VSL523VSL,
514VSL) and shut viscosity controller and M/E F.O. heater steam inlet and outlet
valves. Heater steam line drain to be opened to ensure that steam stop valves
are holding. At the same time, steam to fuel line steam tracing line (for transfer
line from DO transfer pump to service tank, steam line to fuel oil supply pump
and circulating pump , fuel oil mixing column and ME & GE fuel oil line ) must be
closed. Tracing steam common line drain to be opened to ensure that steam stop
valves are holding.
 The heating of ME/GE fuel oil at ME/GE FO heater to be reduced gradually so that
the temperature drop should not be more than 10°C in 5 minutes (i.e. 2°C/min).
 When F.O. temperature comes down to 80-85 degC: then open valve
009VOM(LSMGO inlet) and 021VOM (Safety valve out) and shut 006VOM(F.O.
inlet).
 The valves change over from HFO to LSMGO to be done quickly so that no fuel
counter flow takes place in the system.
 This is the start / beginning of fuel change over in ECA/RCW/SECA. Record data
,time, position, total HFO and LSMGO quantity (Tank wise). All events to log entry
in E/R Log book.
 Ensure that the fuel oil viscosity at fuel pump should always be more than 2 Cst.

 The fuel oil temperature during LSMGO use at fuel pump should not exceed
40°C.
 Prior to maneuvering in port on LSMGO, engine start must be tested on LSMGO.
 During port and closed waters maneuvering, the engine controls to be kept in
ECR so that
starting issues can be resolved faster.
 Run A/E D.O. supply pump and A/E’s fuel to change over to LSMGO.
 All A/E’s F.O. inlet valve (025VOG,026VOG,027VOG) and outlet
valves(028VOG,029 VOG,030 VOG) must be full shut and LSMGO inlet valves
(016 VOG,017 VOG,018 VOG) and outlet valves(006 VOG,007 VOG,008 VOG)
must be full open.
 Run A/E (onload) with LSMGO Min 02 hrs and continue to run as Sea load.
 Run other A/E’s Min 01hrs each with LSMGO(If other A/E’s on stop condition with
LSMGO).
 Run boiler on manual fire for minimum 04hrs(as boiler is on stop condition with
LSMGO).
 After completion of change-over to LSMGO increase load back to normal.

MAIN ENGINE & GENERATOR ENGINE(From LSMGO to

HSFO)
 Ensure that the HSFO in the service tank is at normal service temperature(80
-85deg C)
 Change-over of ME from LSMGO to HSFO to be done only at low load under
50-55% ME loads
 After completion of change-over to HSFO increase load back to normal.
 The valves change over from LSMGO to HSFO to be done quickly so that no
fuel counter
flow takes place in the system.
 Open the steam line to ME/GE fuel line heater and steam return line from
heater.
 The heating of ME/GE fuel oil at ME/GE FO heater to be increased gradually so
that the
temperature increase should not be more than 10°C in 5 minutes (i.e.
2°C/min).
 Open the steam tracing once the pre-heater is operating normally.

Aux. Boiler (From HSFO to LSMGO)

 Start Automatic operation for combustion.

 Switch the fuel flow by valve operation from HSFO to LSMGO.
 Select Oil Heater switch in the control panel to "OFF", and "F.O. TEMP. DETECT"
switch to "CANCEL (LSMGO)”
 Stop supply of steam to heat tracing device.
 After lamp indication of "F.O. TEMP. DETECT CANCEL" to ON from flickering, and
temp. gauge by the burner indicates oil temp below 58 C, it means change fuel to
LSMGO. is completed.
In case black smoke comes out from funnel, by burning fuel volume increases
due to lower viscosity, lower the fuel pressure by adjusting oil pressure regulating
valve.

Aux. Boiler (From LSMGO to HSFO)

 Clean the strainer before changing fuel to H.F.O.
 Ensure that the HSFO in the service tank is at normal service temperature(80
-85deg C)
 Start Automatic operation for combustion.
 Switch the valve operation from LSMGO to HSFO
 When HSFO is fed to fuel supply line, oil temperature starts increasing. Confirm
it at the temperature gauge by the burner. (Visually confirm if HSFO is mixed
much by opening air vent cock of the oil heater.)
 After confirmation of HSFO mixing, supply steam to heat tracing unit.
 Select oil heater switch in the control panel to "AUTO".
 Once "F.O. TEMP. DETECT" lamp starts flickering, select "F.O. TEMP. DETECT"
switch to “ACTIVE” (HSFO)
 When temperature gauge shows its temp. exceeding 100 decC, it indicates
switching over of fuel to HSFO. is done.
