Assignment No. 3- Gravity

1-

A B
WL (105.00) L = 17km
WL (90.00)

It is required to pump 10,000 m3 of water daily from Tank A (Water level=105m) to

Tank B (water level=90m). Average working hours are 16 hours per day. The
pipeline profile between the two tanks is shown in the figures below.

It is required to prepare a preliminary design for the water transport system by

defining the following:
- The required pipe diameters and pressure class (multiple diameters and
pressure classes can be used along the line)
- Location and the required pumping head for pump stations (if any),
- Locations and sizes of break pressure tanks and regulating tanks (if any are
required)
- Location and size (required Cv) of regulating valves (if needed).
- Location of the main air and drain valves along the profile.

The following data may be used in the design:

- Available pipe sizes are 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600
- The available pressure classes are PN6, PN8, and PN10 bar
- Used pipes have an equivalent roughness height of 0.003mm
- Minimum pratical storage volume for break pressure and regulating tanks is
about 150 m3 (15 min storage)
- Water level in tanks is assumed to be 2 m above inlet/outlet pipe centerline
level.
- All local (minor) losses can be neglected
- The available pump curves are as follows, selection of the suitable pump will
be based on the pump providing operating discharge closest to design
discharge.

2- For the pipe profile shown in the figures below, it is required to design a water
transport system to transfer 1200 m3 of water daily from Tank 1 to Tank 2 (average
working hours 18 hours per day). The following data shall be used in the design:
- Minimum water pressure in the pipes at high points is 5m
- If regulating tanks or break pressure tanks are to be used, a minimum
residual head of 5m is required upstream the tank (above the water level in
the tank). Water level in the tank can be assumed to be 2m higher than the
pipe centerline elevation at its location
- HDPE pipes shall be used with an equivalent roughness height of 0.003mm.
Available pipe diameters and pressure classes are shown in the table below:

PN 4 bar – SDR26 PN 6.3 bar – SDR17

DN: Nominal Pipe Diameter
E: wall thickness
I.D: Internal diameter

Hint: Prepare two alternative designs for the system to solve the profile problem at
the high point. Compare between the two alternatives.

3- For the system and pipe profile shown in the figure below, the operating flow
between the two tanks is 100 lit/sec. The system is already designed and the pipe
internal diameter is selected as 250mm with an equivalent roughness height of
0.03mm. A control valve is located upstream the lower tank to control the flow.

- Find the maximum required pressure rating for the pipes.

- If the available pipe pressure classes are PN6, PN10, PN12, and PN16 bars,
what is the required length from each class in the system?

- If it is required to decrease the design pressure of the pipes, find the best
location to install a break pressure tank. What is the required length fom each
pressure class in the system in this case.

4- It is required to transfer 150lit/sec from Tank A (water level 45m) to Tank B

(water level 10m). The pipeline profile between the two tanks indicated an
intermediate high point of an elevation of 32m. It is required to design the pipeline
with two different diameters (without using any intermediate tanks) such that:
‐ Minimum pressure at high points is 5m.
‐ Minimum residual head required at the downstream tank is 5m.
‐ The available pipe pressure ratings are PN4, PN6, and PN10 bars only.
‐ The available pipe diameters and friction slope (at the design discharge) are
given in the table below
