46th annual dulcimer

festival great for beginners,
musicians wanting to jam

EVART — The 46th annual Origi-

nal Dulcimer Players FunFest wel-
comes seasoned musicians looking
to jam and newcomers looking to
pluck their first notes.
Evart hosts the festival at the
Osceola County Fairgrounds July
19-21.
The hammered dulcimer is a
percussion-string instrument
played with a small mallet hammer
to strike the strings. And Michigan,
according to festival president
Kathy Rayman, has one of the high-
est concentration of dulcimer play-
ers in the country.
The festival has only grown since
its beginnings in Marion, festival
president Kathy Rayman said,
when a group of men gathered to
form the first group. Around 3,800
people attended each of the past
two festivals.
The festival will draw not just
fans of music, but fans of history.
“The hammer dulcimer has
evolved over hundreds of years,”
Rayman said. “People give an inter-
est in something historical.”
Those who have never played a
dulcimer — or an instrument —
before are welcome to give it a try.
Classes are held throughout the
day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Experienced
musicians also will find an oppor-
tunity to jam with other musicians
throughout the day.
“Lots of people that are musi-
cians come just for the jamming,”
Rayman said.
A stage show will be held each
night starting at 6 p.m.
General festival admission is $15
per person, while day passes are $7.
Fairground campsites with electri-
cal are $20 per night and primitive
camping is $17 per night. Sites
are assigned on a first-come, first-
served basis.

Church offers dignity, opportunity

during free Monday meal program

REED CITY — For some,

Reed City’s Monday meal
program at the Church of
the Firstborn is a calling.
That is what the church
members and volunteers
would call it.
For those that attend the
Monday free meal in the
basement of the church,
the tablecloths, service and
sense of community is a
chance to get nourishment
and dignity in the same
bite.
It is a program that has
been part of the mission of
the Higbee Street church
for years, and because of
increased poverty, job loss
and economic hardships,
as well as lack of fresh food
with the loss of the lone
grocery store in town, the
crowd is bigger than ever.
For pastor Tim Fagan,
the need is great, but so is
the need to remember that
those who come are look-
ing for help with a sense of
honor.
The program is set up
just like a local diner —
red and white checkered
tablecloths, seasonings on
the table, and a friendly
and respectful staff serv-
ing up the meals. The look
is thanks to volunteers
and donations from places
like Reed City’s Pizza Hut,
which offered some sup-
plies, and local food dis-
tributors who offer extra
food and supplies.
But the heart of the
program comes from the
church and the volunteers
who serve and donate food
each week, without limit.
“It is all you care to eat,”
Fagan proudly said. “We
don’t cut people off that
are hungry.”
For the increased crowd
In addition to seeing their Monday meal program as their mission, The Reed City Church of the
Firstborn offers extra food and clothes, and items like these cans of formula to those in need.

Pastor Fagan, who has
been ministering for more
than 46 years, tells chil-
dren there that this is their
“meal out” just like at a
restaurant.
And for Fagan, that
sounds like the goal — to
preserve a sense of com-
munity, family, and respect
for people otherwise suf-
fering.
“This is supposed to be
a place where the people
come feel honor, respect
and love from us,” said
Fagan. His church mem-
bers manage to provide the
weekly food — somehow,
and sometimes without
knowing how.
“God always provides,
and never lets us down,”
said his wife, Bonnie.

• 7/2/2018 Suspicious Situ-
ation — Officers were dis-
patched to investigate a sus-
picious subject. Contact was
made with the individual
and it was determined that
no services were required.
• Retail Fraud — Officers
were called to a shoplifting
complaint. The subject was
arrested for retail fraud.
The subject also had four
outstanding warrants. They
were transported to the
Osceola County Jail where
they were lodged on their
charge and warrants.
• 7/3/2018 Property Dam-
age Accident — Officers
were called to a two-vehicle
property damage accident.
No injuries were reported.
• Standby — Officers were
called to conduct a standby
during a custody exchange.
• Dog at Large — A dog at
large was found and trans-
ported to the Osceola Coun-
ty Animal Shelter.
• Found Property — Some
personal property was left
at the Evart Police Depart-
ment. Attempts to locate the
owner are being made.
• Malicious Destruction
of Property — Officers were
dispatched to a malicious
destruction of property
complaint. The case is being
sent to the prosecuting at-
torney for review.
• Civil/Obstruction — Of-
ficers were dispatched to
an attempted breaking and
entering complaint that
was discovered to be a civil
dispute. One subject was ar-
rested for assaulting police
and resisting arrest. The
subject was transported
to the Osceola County Jail
where they were lodged on
their charges.
• 7/4/2018 Domestic — Of-
ficers were dispatched to
a domestic abuse between
two siblings. One subject
was arrested and transport-
ed to the Osceola County
Jail where they were lodged
on domestic assault charg-
es.

dispatched to a trespassing
complaint. One subject was
served with a No Trespass-
ing Notice and advised they
would be arrested if they re-
turned to the property.
• Disorderly/Malicious
Destruction of Property
— Officers were called to a
report of an assault at a lo-
cal park. Contact was made
with a subject who was act-
ing erratically and smelled
of alcohol intoxicants. The
subject was arrested and
charged with disorderly
conduct. They were trans-
ported to the Osceola Coun-
ty Jail where they were
lodged on their charges.
• Runaway — Officers
were called to a report of a
juvenile runaway. The sub-
ject was located and contact
was made with the subject’s
probation officer who re-
quested the youth be trans-
ported to the Muskegon Riv-
er Youth Home for lodging.
