Middle Gobi Motorcycle Trail Ulaanbaatar

6—Day Motorcycle Trail (8th - 13th August 2018)

This itinerary is suitable for experienced riders, preferably with some off-road experience. Zorgol Khairkhan

Escape from Ulaanbaatar for a long weekend of exciting motorbike riding through the sparsely
populated provinces of Tuv “Central” aimag and Dundgov “Middle Gobi”. Leaving from the eastern
side of the city, we ride for approximately 25km on the main road to Nalaikh before branching off onto Baga Gazar

“Ongi Steppe” in Middle Gobi Desert

Day 1 Arrive Ulaanbaatar.
Day 2 Meet the tour crew,
allocate motorbikes and start
riding. The scenery is wild and
remote, fertile meadows and
rolling hills. Late afternoon arrive
at the ger camp near to 'Baga
Gazar' Chuluu. Overnight ger

Day 3 Ride through the
picturesque granite rocks of Baga
Gazriin Chuluu, then ride
through 'Delgerkhangai' village to
'Saikhan Ovoo'. Nestled in the
mountains, on a bend in the river
are the extensive ruins of 'Ongi
Khid' monastery. Overnight ger

Day 4 A long day’s ride continuing
northwards through Middle Gobi to
reach 'Zorgol Khairkhan', a
dramatic granite mountain with
bizarre rock formations jutting out
against the skyline. Our last night is
spent not far from 'Bayan-Unjuul'
village at Ovurburd Sands.

Day 5 Drive back north to
Ulaanbaatar, stopping on the way
for lunch before riding through-
'Sergelen' village and arriving in the

Riding on camels with our local guides, we trek nearly 200 km over 7 days from the

Naadam Festival
Cultural Adventure Tour 6th - 14th July 2018
Everyone loves a festival, so the best time visit Mongolia is at the time of the annual Naadam.

The celebrations take place in every city, town and village for two or three days, usually starting

on 11th July. It is a sporting event with competitions of horse racing, wrestling and archery.

We travel in the provinces of Overkhangai and Arkhangai in Central Mongolia, getting a great Kharkhorin
chance to see the vast and varied landscape: mountain, desert, forest and steppe. We will join the Tsenkher Hot Spring

festival in the town of Tsetserleg, but this tour includes much more. You will ride horses in the

Eastern Mongolia Motorbike Trail

5 – Day Motorcycle Trail (11th—15th September 2018)
This itinerary is suitable for experienced riders, preferably with some off-road experience.
Mostly the trail follows rough jeep tracks, but we do ride some distance on tarmac. Mungunmort

North East of Ulaanbaatar lies the beautiful 'Terelj' National Park on the edge of the Khaan Ulaanbaatar

Khentii mountains which extend into Khentii province. This is an area of forests, big rivers,
mountains and steppe, with many places of historical importance since it is the area where

Genghis Khan was born. Keeping off the improved tarmac roads as much as possible, we make
a circular route of 600km starting from Ulaanbaatar and riding to Terelj and Baga–Nuur, Jargalant

returning via Delgerkhaan which was the site of Genghis Khan’s original capital before it was
moved to Kharkhorin.

Each night will be wild camping (tents provided) and support vehicles will carry the equipment

Mountain Biking Tour
2nd - 10th June 2018

This exciting trail in the northern provinces
of Bulgan and Selenge, passes through varied
and beautiful landscapes with wide fertile
valleys, forests of silver birch and poplar,
rivers and mountain passes. There are a few
villages along the way, but most of the
population are nomadic and live in the
traditional round white gers. Depending on
how much rain has fallen, wild flowers may
be abundant, and there is a good chance of
seeing eagles, cranes, vultures, partridge,
falcons and other interesting birds along the
way.
We travel by train from Ulaanbaatar to the
start of the trail at the copper mining city of
Erdenet. After 5 days riding, we suddenly
come upon the fantastic Amarbayasgalant
monastery, one of the largest and best
Buddhist monasteries in the country. On the
last day of cycling we reach the main road
and then travel by jeep back to Ulaanbaatar.

“Monastery of Tranquil Felicity”
was constructed in 1727 at the foot
of Mount Buren Khaan. It was
commissioned by the Manchu
Emperor and built in Chinese style

with willow trees and poplar. The valley
opens out into cultivated fields near the

village and up into

passes then descend
to the Selenge river to camp.
Day 5 Ride through Khyalgant village ,
then head east into the hills. Cross another
wooded pass on a rough rocky track, then
descend to a fertile valley to camp.
Day 6 Follow the track over the
mountains, passing through valleys
inhabited by many nomadic families.
Overnight camping near Amarbayasgalant
monastery.
Day 7 Morning visit the fascinating
Buddhist monastery located in this remote
valley. Afternoon cycle to reach the main
road. Overnight camping.
Day 8 Return by jeep to Ulaanbaatar,
arriving early afternoon in time for a little
shopping. Overnight hotel.
Day 9 Departure.
Enjoy the challenge with full support
Tour Grading: The trail is classed as
moderate, requiring some technical skill
to manage the steep rocky passes. The
first couple of days are on hard packed
mud tracks through valleys between the
mountains. If there is much rain, the
surface may be slippery and more
difficult. Riding through the forests and
over mountains on rocky tracks
sometimes blocked by fallen trees will be
quite challenging. The daily riding
distance is between 40km and 70km,
depending on the terrain, and the total
trail is nearly 300 km.

Master Rally Motorbike Trail Ulaanbaatar

Off–Road Motorcycle Tour 17th - 25th August 2018

company. Our “Mongolia Master Rally” Motorcycle Trail is our newest trip and we’ll Bayanondor

This trail follows part of the route taken by the Mongolia Master Rally. Most of the

They rise up from the steppe
and dominate the horizon for
many hours along the route
(Day 5) in the district of
Bogd village.
Day 1 Arrive in Ulaanbaatar.
Day 2 Set off from the city to the
pilgrimage site of “Eej Had”
(“Mother Rock”). Continue riding
to the village of ‘Bayan-Tsagaan’
and set up camp in the
surrounding hills. (Approximate
distance 210 km)
Day 3 Ride to ‘Gobi Ugtaal’
village then to the mountains
known as “Ikh Gazariin Chuluu”
where the highest peaks are at an
altitude of over 1760 meters.
Overnight camp in this incredible
place. (Approx distance 160 km)
Day 4 After riding through
Mandalgobi town head towards
“Delgerkhangai” mountain; the
road winds briefly up into to the
highest pass at 1502 meters
altitude. Exit the mountains and
ride in an increasingly remote
wilderness, many tracks of which
are not marked on maps at all.
(Approximate distance 230km)
Day 5 As we approach the
northern edge of the Gobi Desert
the ground becomes sandy with
“Zag” (“Saxaul”) trees. Ahead lie
the big dark “Arts Bogdiin
Nuruu” mountains. Finally arrive

This is a fine adventure for people of all
ages with 10 days of fun and fascinating
experiences. We travel by jeep to Arkhangai
province in Central Mongolia where
Genghis Khan established the capital of the
great Mongol Empire in the thirteenth
century. We travel through countryside
which varies from steppe to mountain to
desert and forest. Everyone will get a
chance to ride horses and maybe camels
and yaks, as the local people do.
You will experience traditional Mongolian
hospitality and spend time with a nomadic
family, perhaps watching the horses being
milked or playing with their children. At the
hot springs you can enjoy bathing in
outdoor pools on the edge of the forest and
near the town of Kharkhorin you will see
monks of all ages performing Buddhist
rituals in the ancient temples of Erdene -
Zuu monastery.
Although Mongolia is a huge country and
driving distances tend to be quite long, for
this tour we have attempted to make the
journeys shorter and more interesting.
Sometimes we stay for two nights at the
same ger camp so it is not necessary to pack
up and move every day of the tour. It is
always nice not to have to rush, but to have
time to enjoy these lovely places.

Day 1 Arrive in Ulaanbaatar. We meet
you and take you to the hotel in the city
centre.
Day 2 Take a jeep from Ulaanbaatar
across the vast open landscape to
Khogno Khan mountain. Arrive at the
ger camp located at the foot of a huge
granite rocky cliff and in the evening
explore the dramatic surroundings
(beware of wolves).
Day 3 Hike round the mountain to the
other side where a small Buddhist temple
has been built beside the ruins of an old
monastery with a grand outlook. You will
have another night at Khogno Khan .
Day 4 Jeep to Kharkhorin, the valley
where Genghis Khan built his capital.
Visit Erdene Zuu monastery. Afternoon
ride horses in the valley. Overnight ger
camp by the Orkhon river.
Day 5 Drive to Tsetserleg town. Visit
the local market and in the afternoon
drive up into the mountains to Tsenkher
hot springs.
Day 6 Visit a nomadic family and see the
way they live. They may give us a ride on
their yak and cart, which is how they
normally bring wood from the forest.

The Gobi Desert straddling the border between
Mongolia and China, is a wild and dramatic
place, entirely suitable for motorcycling. Our
KTM 450EXC bikes are an exciting bike to
ride, having plenty of torque, good grip and
being lightweight so riding long distances on
tricky roads is not too exhausting. We ride on
all sorts of roads: asphalt as well as packed mud,
sand or gravel tracks with washouts and
potholes. All pretty much free of traffic and
through some spectacular scenery.
The famous Gobi Desert is not all vast flat
steppe under a deep blue sky. There are bizarre
rock formations, canyons, the Gurvansaikhan
mountain range and sand dunes 100km long,
as well as forests of small saxaul trees and other
desert vegetation. Apart from a few villages and
small towns that we pass through on the way,
most of the population have a nomadic lifestyle,
frequently moving with their round white felt
yurts (“gers”) and herds of camels, goats and
horses. This trip is a fascinating cultural
experience as well as an off-road tour across
Mongolia of over one and a half thousand
kilometres.
Some nights will be spent at ger camps where
traditional yurts have comfortable facilities
including a ger restaurant, bar, showers and
toilet. These will be very welcome at the end of
each day, since the Gobi Desert is usually a hot,
dusty and windy place.
Khongor Els—Sand Dune Riding
Day 1 Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to

Day 2 Ride to Baga Gazriin Chuluu
across the green rolling hills of Tuv
province. Overnight amidst the
spectacular granite rocks where we may
see marmots, eagles, ibex and steppe fox.
Day 3 Ride through Mandalgov, capital
of Dundgov (“Middle Gobi”) to Tsagaan
Suvraga, an amazing series of white and
pink limestone cliffs. An excellent place
for out-of-the-ordinary photography.
Day 4 The track to Dalanzadgad, capital
of Umngov (“South Gobi”) has little
traffic. Ride up into the mountains of
the Gurvansaikhan National Park. and
walk into Yoliin Am canyon (“Vulture's
Mouth”).
Day 5 This is Mongolia as one imagines
it: distant horizons, dry rocky earth and
a huge blue sky. We ride west to
Khongoriin Els where big golden sand
dunes meet the end of the Gobi Altai
mountain range.
Day 6 Ride to Bayanzag where there is
a forest of rare saxaul trees and the
“flaming cliffs” where Roy Chapman
Andrews discovered the first ever nest of
dinosaur eggs in his 1920 expedition.

Genghis Khan was born in Dadal near to the Siberian border in the north east corner Binder
of Mongolia. This is a beautiful area of mountains, forest, lakes and wide rivers. It is
also of immense historical significance and we will visit the places where Genghis Baldan Baraven
Khan lived until he became leader of his people and moved his capital to Kharkhorin
Ulaanbaatar
in Central Mongolia. The first and last days of the trip are on a good new black
topped road, but for the rest of the tour we follow rough jeep tracks on packed mud
or rock. There may be some river crossings (depends on recent weather conditions),
although we travel out of our way to find bridges to cross the big rivers. All nights on Underkhan
tour are spent in the wild, camping in tents.

point - Khul Sayangiin Davaa,
through increasingly remote and
wild countryside.
Stop for a break near Tsetserleg
Towards the end of the day the
track gets rougher and there are
several rivers to cross. Overnight

Day 6 At first the track
continues along a rocky river
bed. Then the scenery starts to
change, becoming greener with
a few trees. There are
magnificent views of the route
that can be admired from each

Day 7 Ride over one small pass
to reach the first sign of
civilisation since Shargaljuut.
This is the "som" (village) of
Bulgan, Ride along the valley to
Tsetserleg, the capital of
Arkhangai province, and spend
the afternoon exploring the
town.

Day 8 Jeep to Kharkhorin town
in the Orkhon valley. At one
time this was the centre of the
great Mongol Empire. In the
16th century Erdene Zuu
Buddhist monastery was
founded here and we will visit
the monastery which currently

The best way to experience Mongolia is obviously on the back of a horse, because that is
how the locals travel. The life of Mongolia's nomads has changed little since the days of Lun
Genghis Khan and as we ride through the Khangai mountains and Orkhon river valley, you Ulaanbaatar

It is now a largely forgotten fact that the great cities of Beijing and Moscow actually
owe much of their importance to the Mongols. Khublai Khaan, grandson of Ching-
gis Khaan, moved the capital of the Mongol Empire to Beijing in the thirteenth cen-
tury from where he was ruler of the Yuan dynasty in China during the time of Marco
Polo's travels. In Russia, Moscow was just a small town when the Golden Horde
passed through on their way to conquer Europe. Another of Chinggis Khaan's grand-
sons created a throne for a Russian puppet king and gave him Mongol backing, so
that Moscow became the centre for Russian rule.

As well as our fixed date group tours, we can also arrange
private tailor-made itineraries for groups of friends, clubs
and schools. If you let us know when you want to go and
what you would like to do in Mongolia, we will design a
trip especially for your group. You can choose mountain
biking, horse riding, hik-
ing, camel riding, or a
combination of these ac-
tivities. If you have a par-
ticular interest such as
Buddhism or wild flowers,
we will take this into con-
sideration when planning
your journey.
The main tourist season is
from June through to Sep-
tember and during these
months the traditional ger
camps, which are the main
form of accommodation
outside the city, are all
working. Outside the
tourist season it may be
necessary to stay in local
hotels (which might or
might not have electricity,
water and food), or in
more remote areas one can
camp, depending on the
weather.
