NTNU - kunnskap for en bedre verden

Ved NTNU, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet, skapes kunnskap for en bedre verden og løsninger som kan forandre hverdagen.

PhD position
PhD position on Modelling, simulation, and experimental analysis of double skin window/façade systems with integrated sensing and control
technology
(AD-13-17)

A PhD position is available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Architecture and Technology in the Energy and
Environment group. The field of work will be modelling, simulation and experimental analysis of a new type of double skin window system.

Information about the Department and Group

The Department of Architecture and Technology has 65 staff members. It is host for the Energy and Environment group. Other scientific groups comprise
Building Materials and Constructions, Building conservation and Transformation, and Form and Theory.
Currently, the group consists of nine faculty members, three Postdoctoral/Researcher fellows, and seven PhD candidates, and will increase with some
new PhD candidates within 2017. Research activities within the group range from building physics to building energy use and energy efficiency, indoor
environment, integrated energy design, solar energy in architecture, lighting and daylighting, environmental performance of buildings, to low emission
refurbishment of built environment. The group is strongly involved in the Norwegian FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB)
(http://www.zeb.no), Zero Emission Neighbourhoods (ZEN) (http://www.ntnu.no/zen) as well as in various national and international projects, e.g. IEA
Tasks or EBC Annexes. The group has tight collaborations with SINTEF Building and Infrastructure and shares laboratory facilities with SINTEF and
other departments at NTNU.

Research project description

The research project is funded by the Research Council of Norway, under the program FRINATEK - Young Research Talents. The project title is:
REsponsive, INtegrated and VENtilated - REINVENT - windows.
The aim of the project is to develop a new prototype of ventilated double skin window system as well as models to evaluate the thermophysical
behaviour of such a system in order to obtain optimal operations through integrated sensing and control technology. At the same time, the project will
investigate the potentials and challenges of dynamic building envelope components with autonomous control systems in contrast with conventional
systems (either not controlled or controlled through a centralized building management system).
The project team consists of one PhD candidate, one Post-doc Fellow, one Researcher (part-time), and the Principal investigator/Project manager.
The project is a collaboration with two partners: SINTEF Building and Infrastructure and SAPA Building Systems. In addition to this, different
collaborations with international universities and research centres are planned.

Work description
The PhD candidate will deal with both numerical and experimental activities, in collaborations with other members of the research team at NTNU and
SINTEF, and with the industrial partner.
The PhD candidate will develop a physical-mathematical model of an advanced ventilated double skin window, and implement it in a suitable code for
building performance simulations. The aim of this activity is to determine optimal operations for the ventilated window in order to implement control logics
in a local controller. Real-time simulation for continuous, autonomous control of the system is the ultimate goal of this part of the research project.
Parallel to the numerical activities, the PhD candidate will contribute to the experimental analysis of the advanced ventilated double skin window, carried
out on a full-scale prototype to be tested in a climate simulator available at the shared laboratories of NTNU and SINTEF. This activity involves
experimental design, installation, calibration, and control of the monitoring system, as well as analysis of experimental data.
Outputs of the research work should be: a validated numerical model for mechanically and naturally ventilated double skin window/façade systems,
possibly implemented in a real-time simulation environment; identification of the operation issues in these systems; definition of optimal control logics for
different climates.
Previous research work should be utilized with this research work, especially for the development of the physical-mathematical model, as well as for the
design of experiments and calibration/monitoring.
The PhD candidate is expected to contribute to the dissemination activity in the project, primarily through scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals,
papers to be presented in international conferences, and popular science communications.
Collaboration with the other PhD candidates, other team members in the project, and guiding MSc students will be beneficial for this project.
Furthermore, the candidate should collaborate with the national and international partners. The PhD candidate should spend a period abroad at one or
more of the selected universities/research centres involved in the collaboration, among them the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA, Aalborg
University, Denmark, and Tecnalia, Spain. Short-term scientific missions at the production site of the industrial partner (located in Germany), and to other
relevant institutions/companies collaborating in the project are also expected. Additional funds are provided to cover extra-costs connected to these
activities.

Qualifications
Applicants have to address strictly the following selection criteria:

Required:
A highly motivated candidate with a high-grade (minimum character B) Master's degree (or equivalent) within architecture, civil and environmental
engineering, energy engineering, environmental physics, or related field.
Good physical-mathematical knowledge and analytical skills.
A good understanding of thermophysical phenomena in building envelope components.
Experience with simulation tools relevant for the building performance modelling and simulation, e.g. IDA-ICE, EnergyPlus, Dymola.
Experience with programming languages as well as generic computational tools, such as, C+, MATLAB, Pyton, Modelica, or similar.
A high level of personal responsibility, initiative, and ability to work in a project team.
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
