I.

OBJECTIVE:
To develop the skills of precision measurement through
verification of (a) the value of pi; (b) density of the metal ball and (c)
Pythagorean Theorem.

II. MATERIALS:
Triangle Beam Balance
Metal Ball
Vernier Caliper
Cylinder
Paper
Ruler
Calculator

III. PROCEDURES:

a. THE VALUE OF PI

In getting the value of pi first of all get the paper and wrap it
around the cylinder second mark a point where the paper meets third
remove the paper from the cylinder. Then measure the length of the
paper using the ruler. And finally make note the value of the length
of the paper and record it in your activity paper.

Diameter of a Cylinder

In finding the diameter of a cylinder the first thing to do is that

place carefully the cylinder in a Vernier Caliper. then press the lock
of the Vernier Caliper after pressing the lock determine the value of
the scale and record the exact measurement of a cylinder in your
activity paper.

b. DENSITY OF THE METAL BALL

In getting the density of the metal ball the first thing to do is

to get the metal ball and place it in the triple beam balance. See to
it that the white lines must be aligned after the first procedure adjust
the triangle beam balance to get the mass of the metal ball then using
the Vernier Caliper. Get the diameter of the metal ball from the
flattened area to the bulging area and last but not the least get the
average of the 2 values for the diameter and the radius. And finally
after the previous procedures record it in your activity paper.

c. PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM

In getting the Pythagorean theorem the first thing to do is to sketch

a right triangle on the paper. Second label it as a, b, c, for the
opposite side, adjacent side and the hypotenuse third measure the
length of the sides of the right triangle. then compute the value of c
or the hypotenuse. And finally substitute the value of c²=a²+b².

IV. DIAGRAM:
V. DATA

a. Value of Pi
Circumference ( C ) = 6cm
Diameter (D) = 1.91 cm
Value of pi (π computed ) = 3.1413 cm
Value of pi ( π accepted ) = 3.1416 cm
Percent of Error = 0.0095%
b. Density of the Metal Ball
Mass of Metal Ball = 65.9 g
Diameter of Metal Ball (d) = 2.45 cm
Radius of Metal Ball (r) = 1.225 cm
Volume of Metal Ball (v) = 7.7001 cc
Density (computed) of Metal Ball= 8.558 g/cc
Density (accepted) of Metal Ball = 8.84 g/cc
Percent of Error = 3.2 %

c. Pythagorean Theorem
a (measured) = 5 cm
b ( measured) = 5 cm
c (measured) = 7.5 cm
c (computed) = 7.07 cm
Percent of Difference= 20.93 %

VI. COMPUTATION:

A. π=c/d π = 6cm/1.91cm C. a =√c² -b² b = √c² -a²

π = 3.1413 cm = √56.25 -25 =√56.25 -25
a = √5.59cm b =√5.59cm

% of error= value accepted – value computed x 100 % c = √a² + b²

value accepted =√25 + 25
= 3.1416 - 3.1416 x 100% =√50
3.1416 c =√7.07cm
% of error = 0.0095%

% of diff. = HV – LV x 100%
HV
B. Density (computed) = m % of diff. = 7.07 – 5.59 x 100%
v 7.07
= 65.9 = 1.48 x 100%
7.7001 7.07
Density (computed) = 8.558 g/cc % of diff. = 20.93 %
% of error= value accepted – value computed x 100 %
value accepted
= 8.84 - 8.558 x 100%
8.84
% of error = 3.2%
